I may not be doing LEL
« on: 24 July, 2009, 08:06:12 pm »
I was cleaning my bike for LEL this evening and found a hairline crack where the head tube meets the seat tube.  :'(

I am going to pop up at Condor tomorrow morning but I don't have much hope that they can sort it out before Sunday!

Dunno what to say, except that I am terribly disappointed!

I hadn't thought about this! Do you know where it is?

Northampton-ish, I think.

It's in Moulton, near Northampton.  I'm sure Chris would only be too glad to let you use it.  No rack, but mudguards.  If you have your own saddle (and you WILL want your own saddle for 1400km) with bag loops it would be fine for a saddlebag.  21" frame with a long seatpost.

The rear wheel will not bend or break.  I built it.

If you're at home you're close to me - but I doubt I've got a bike you'd want to do LEL on...

Are there any other YACFers who can help out ?

If I were you I'd beg/steal/borrow a bike or a new frame tomorrow.

Mine is 54cm which is about the same.  I have a rack bag and no bag loops in my saddle. I suppose I could cram everything in a barbag.

If you fancy doing it on fixed or a tricycle, I'm happy to help ;)

Can you buy a new frame tomorrow and do a transplant ?

edit: I have one geared 2-wheeler but it has 26" wheels.

It's quite fast - you can use that if you like.  22" frame.

When I bought it, I had to wait eight weeks, but what I am thinking is going there and see if they can do something. the bike is only 14months/8000kms old, it is really nice to ride but I am not sure I want the same again if it is so flimsy.

Yes i would be interested for the 26''!

Condor were very much aware of  'the other place' and of how many of their customers posted there regularly - to the extent that after some protracted forum discussions, they made the effort to register and respond candidly to questions raised (I think) about the origins of their frames.

If you can find the person on their staff who did that, is there a chance that they'll also respond favourably to your current dilemma?

Either way, the best of luck.

I have a Dawes Galaxy with a 21" (iirc) frame which has a rack.  It also has a SON front wheel.  It currently has no front light but you could nick the Edelux from my Pompino.  SPD pedals.

One issue would be the rear wheel, which was built by me and was my first ever wheel build.  You would need to get hold of a 135mm OLN 700c read wheel, which can take a shimano 8 speed cassette.

I have an Orbit Helium 27 Gear you can use.

I shall be travelling to Coxwold tomorrow for control duties. I could arrange to meet you at Peterborough railway station or other if that would help?

I am 6' tall and have done several 400/600km rides on it.

SON front wheel with IQ Cyo front light. SPD pedals.

When I say "has" a SON front wheel, I lie.  Had.  Nick the one from my Pompino and you'll be right.  :)

Sounds like you have a few potential offers anyway.  Whichever you take up, good luck with it.

This is nailbiting. We have drama and suspense and it hasn't even started yet!

Good luck - I hope you can find a suitable trusty steed in time

Excellent! I shall be leaving mid-morning tomorrow in case other options don't work out.

Or you can borrow my Hewitt Cheviot from near Swindon...you'll have to be here before 10am tomorrow though.

It's a "large" size and I'm just under 5'11".  I regret that it isn't absolutely clean, but it will not let you down as I haven't fettled it since last Friday night's 105 mile romp over the Chilterns.

Oh, and it has a Shimano DH-3N80 in the front wheel.  In fact, it has a Supernova E3 too  :)

Ok, he just picked up my old Harry Hall with fat tyres.

Not as good as the fine machines offered by others on this thread, but he needs to be on a train with a bike at 10:30 in the morning.

That bike's done a LEJOG, an SR Cymru and an SR2000.  But some time ago...

It's sound I think, but slower than Panoramix's Condor doubtless.

 :)

edit, this:

It's a kind of YACF bike too - brakes & saddle courtesy of Oncemore, chainset courtesy of Polar Bear.  The rear hub was a parting gift from an ex girlfriend :)

54cm Aravis Audax available if you need it. Centaur Triple (30x40x53) and 13-29 rear wheel. You'd need to supply your own saddle as it doesn't have one. (Bar tape replaced by plain black bar tape). I'm 5'9". Last used on the Midland Super Grimpeur 300 in June.

It has a Tortec Ultralite rack on it too. SON wheel also available and I'd even lend you my upgraded Solidlights XB2 if necessary :)

SPD Pedals.

Will PM mobile number.

My Bob Jackson is at the control at Thorne. The van is dropping by at midday, and taking stuff to Lea Valley. I can put the bike on the van is it's any use to you.

It's in good nick. I'd ride 600km on it tomorrow, no worries.

I'm 6'1" and have relatively long legs.

If you want to borrow it, you're more than welcome to.
