Having acquired Handbag's Spesh Vita last weekend which she very generously donated (exchanged for a bunch of flowers) to my niece (who was in need of a commuter, for her new job), this weekend I have cleaned, cleaned and cleaned again.
Removed rust.
Replaced tubes and tyres.
Has anyone ever heard of lining the tyre carcass with the tread of a previously used tyre which has had it's sidewalls cut off to enhance puncture protection? It's a first for me.
Genius!
Fitted new cassette & chain and test drove to ascertain that both deliver.
Fitted new Koolstop Salmon brake blocks.
Replaced all cables, inner & outer, with Jagwire products.
Fitted a front mdgrd.
Swooned.
The rear mdgrd might have to wait.
Now, I need to rest.

TGL and I fettled a Thorn Cyclosportif, and I got frustrated that I hadn't got the bits I want for the Bon Jackson.

Took the pump track timing system to the park for a test drive. Sorted out config and setup issues. Very impressed with the bluetooth range - about 40m.

Anyhow, sorted the firmware changes needed and the changes to the app so it runs a bit smoother.

Then fettled the links on the breadboard so the wires are much neater. Should be good to go for Tuesday, but not in my hands.

Soldered up two more alerting system module boards (minus a couple of the more expensive components, which I wasn't ordering until I knew it worked), put together an order for the remaining components, and designed a small PCB to interface with the central heating (which now means I have a couple more components I could have added to that order, d'oh).

SMD soldering is a lot less fiddly when you can start with the small things and work up, rather than building it up subsystem by subsystem so you can check all the voltages are sane along the way.

It's a very old trick, but can leave tubes prone to pinching.

I have called a brief hiatus on PCB making as I don't have suitable transfer medium for getting mask onto the copper. Maybe I should tap up some contacts and see if I can get to use the protomat PCB miller in engineering..

The various things I've been using to hold my tools have been becoming progressively more tatty (spilling allen keys across the inside of the Carradice and the zips ceasing to function), so I thought I'd fettle a tool roll out of... well, see if you can guess. I really should have taken a photo of the donor before I started chopping and sewing.

It's quite scruffy, and my needlework is still like a broken compass, but it seems to work. I'm quite pleased with it, for something that cost nowt.

Don't think they're Midge bars, too flat.

When I needed some cheap bars to take road levers with a 26.0 mm clamp. They are Midge bars.

They're alright, but they only have one decent riding position and they're a bit too wide to tackle the anti-cyclist gates on Darlo's cycle paths.

No, I didn't.  I used socks for a while, but they wore through quickly.  Now, I use one of those pots designed to fit in a bottle cage.

Aye, I thought of one of those. I may still do, if this one doesn't last.

I use one of those Alpkit stuffsacks.  It's looking a bit tatty after several years of keeping my tools together while rattling about in various bike luggage, but it's lightweight, takes up no extra volume itself and was cheap enough that I'll be happy enough to replace it with another one when it falls apart.

Beats trying to sew something out of durable fabric, anyway.

Is it the bag you use to hold a Downmat?  A downmat that hasn't been eaten by rats, that is  ;)

Nahh.  If it were, it would be exactly 10mm shorter than the big allen key.

On the tool bottle front, I discovered a couple years back that Morrisons Value Hot Chocolate comes in a plastic pot that fits perfectly in a normal bottle cage :)

No, jsabine has that to fix now.

Similar material, though - it was a Rose gym bag freebie. I kept the R on the white background in an effort to make it look vaguely professional. Or an effort to let someone else take the blame, either works.
