Title: Panoramas
Post by: zzpza on 23 October, 2008, 02:45:24 am
Anyone here playing with panoramas? I've been using an application called Hugin (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/) a bit and seems to be getting some good results from it. Best of all, it's open source. :)

Here's a pic I took of Wayland's Smithy.

With a bigger version here (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3170/2857668178_8dff00219a_o.jpg).

Yep, I've used Hugin (and obviously the associated PanoTools) a fair bit.  It can take a bit of effort to get a decent shot, but some can look quite good.

I like this shot of Lambeth Bridge.

Click for bigness (http://jakal.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/LambethBridge.jpg)

The Thames is good for this sort of thing.  I've got one somewhere, that was taken a few minutes later on, from the south side looking towards Parliament.  It took me a while to realise that the same couple was visible on both "sides" of the picture.  Walking towards me on the left, and walking away on the right!

This shot of Ilfracombe would have been better, if some of the originals weren't blurred, but I didn't put it together until after I had left.

Here's one of Longleat (alas with one really obvious stitch-line)

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2348/2255946362_d247e0f11c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/andygates/2255946362/sizes/o/)

And a couple of indoor shots while testing Hugin.  Indoor panoramas are kinda cool.

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2378/2250764251_2bb87ac73c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/andygates/2250764251/sizes/o/)

You know, a big panorama would be perfect as the anchor image for a photosynth...

This was an indoors one I took of the new kitchen in my old house, just after it was done, and just before I flogged the place

(http://jakal.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/Kit2Small.jpg) (http://jakal.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/Kit2Large.jpg)

It's quite hard to get an image with this wide an angle indoors, to look acceptable.  The camera I used was a small cheap 3M one, the image could have done with some more processing to remove the jaggies on the shallow angles.

This is a photograph of the reservoir next to Campo do Gerês (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=41.766062,-8.178549&spn=0.026952,0.087891&t=h&z=14) in northern Portugal.

(Click for a larger image)

And a photo of a lake basin in the Badain Jaran Desert, which unfortunately has a gap in the bottom center of the panorama.  Oh well.

(Click for a larger image)

Both images were created using Autostich, which is some free software I found on the net.  I'll have to play with Hugin to see what that can do.

I like the fact that you can create huge images with loads of detail.

Here is Lords, before a 20:20 match

The big image is reduced by 50% from the original. Here is original detail at 100%

I also use panorama stitching to make up for having the wrong lens at the wrong time. Or simply expanding opportunities.

There seems to be lots of people trying to link to images on Google servers, and failing.  I don't know what's going on, but I'd guess that the servers have some sort of mechanism to stop people directly linking to the images.

lol, i went to school in ilfracombe!

i treat the finial pano as if it was a single exposure, so i fix the focus and exposure before i take any photos and then use the same values for them all.

The photos I put up were created using autostitch (http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html):

Quote
Autostitch™ is the world's first fully automatic 2D image stitcher. Capable of stitching full view panoramas without any user input whatsoever, Autostitch is a great new technology for panoramic photography, VR and visualisation applications. This is the first solution to stitch any panorama completely automatically, whether 1D (horizontal) or 2D (horizontal and vertical).

Autostitch is incredibly simple to use! Just select a set of photos, and Autostitch does the rest: digital photos in, panoramas out. Try the free demo (for Windows)

Basically install the software, fed into the software the photos you wanna make a panorama of and the software does the rest.  The files generated from Autostitch are not high quality, but it's easy to use and I've only heard about Hugin since reading this thread.

This was one I did years ago, with a fairly useless little USB stick camera.  This original image quality isn't brilliant, so the final image isn't either, but it's not bad.  The brightness went a bit wrong just right of the centre, but there's little you can do with a camera which has only one control, the shutter button!

I love panos me...I can't be doing with stitching software as it usually introduces far too much ghosting and banding...I use Paint Shop Pro to join 5 or 6 pics with plenty of overlap and I can control the blend myself.

Love pano's, but every time I spend the time to take the photos it is as far as it gets, never get around to stitch them together, too lazy, even when autostitch is soooo easy. Point it to the folder where the photos are and click save is pretty much it.

Indeed it's Tintern....it was several years of riding past it before I got one without the scaffolding. The one above was in 2005...I went there last year and again they were working on it....though most could be cloned out.

Hold down the button halfway and most cameras will focus-exposure-and-balance lock.  Do it when pointing at an average bit of the shot to get the right levels, then take the shots.

No it's just cropped to make the letter box shape. I suppose you could say it's cheating, but I like the result.

I have been playing with Hugin, and so far I'm pretty impressed. I've played with a few stitching programs and Hugin is the best yet. A couple of early results -

As I recall (and it's a while since I last used it) Hugin does allow you to tell it to compensate for things like Brightness variations (somewhere near the end, when it does the proper stitching bit).

I used to find it easier to generate multiple TIFs and then combine them with enblend, which did a much better job than Hugin of joining, and smoothing the edges.  I think that Hugin has improved this a lot in the more recent variations, but it might be worth trying enblend if you're still having problems (it is a command line program, but it's not that difficult to use).

yes, hugin can set the brightness variation. i'm using the mac osx version - it's on the first screen when you add the photos. you select the photo that has the exposure you want to use for the rest of the series and click "Anchor this image for exposure".

also, the version of hugin i'm using 0.6.1 (i think this is quite old, i installed it a while ago, but i've only been using it recently) gives the option of using enblend when you set the output filetype to be tiff. :)

as far as i'm concerned it's the aspect ratio of the final image. ;)

looks like i picked the best to start with (hugin is the only pano app i've used). :D

Why is it that some of these shots look "normal" and others look weird with more than one vanishing point?  Is it just the subject, or is something mathematical going on?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean Andy, clearly some of the shots, generally the ones where the distance to parts of the image varies greatly (eg my earlier shots of the kitchen) can look distorted, but most landscape shots, where nothing is very close, tend to look OK (to me anyway).  Can you point to a specific image which is representative of what you are thinking of?

I think it depends on whether there are features in the panorama that had really obvious perspective in the original pictures.

Look at the road in the second pic in this post (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10476.msg205758#msg205758)
Title: Re: Panoramas

Using a wide-angle lens to create a panorama will lead to this multiple vanishing-point effect as you will get barrel distortion (fish-eye).

To see this effect, zoom as wide as you can and try to take a panorama of a totally flat horizon (a sea-scape perhaps).  Each frame will be slightly fish-eyed (depending on focal length, lens quality and so on).  There's no way your software can resolve horizons with a slight curvature into a flat horizon and so you will tend to get a vanishing point in the centre of each frame.

Better to zoom in a bit so you get a flat(ter) horizon.

When ever I do my landscape pano's I always try and work with a 50mm lens or digi equivalent to get the perspective close to normal, its not an exact science more rough guide but sometimes I will alter the focal length to suit.

I like the fact that you can create huge images with loads of detail.

Cool, that worked well!

Though I did it mainly 'auto' in Hugin - I simply can't get it working in manual, even with the tutorials...

Ta. Nice pics.

I was a bit puzzled by this quote from the site:
"I would like to precise that none of my pictures receive any kind of digital trickery nor fancy manipulations."

I'm guessing that 'precise' is a misprint and he means 'say' or something. Anyway, it seems an odd thing to say about a load of digital images. Does he mean he didn't do anything about the colour balance/contrast or anything, just left it to the camera?

It would probably be better if you just put a thumbnail into the thread, rather than make the browser download and rescale two images >1MB each.  Anyone browsing this thread with a phone, or over a slow link is probably swearing at it.

Good view though, in both cases.

Autostitch gives images as big as all the images together. You have to change the scaling in the options menu. Its default appears to be 10%. Change it 100% but be prepared for a very big picture.

You can use panoramas for other things.

This team line-up is 4 images stitched as I had the wrong lens on at the time they lined up.

Has anyone got Hugin fully working on an EeePC ?  I've got Hugin itself working, although it won't work for a very large image (so far maximum appears to be about 4000 pixels), since memory is a bit tight, but I can't find a repository, or other easy way, to get enblend installed, so the images won't merge together very tidely at the joins.  I haven't looked to see if autopano is available in one of the repositories.

If anyone else tries it, it is possible to get Enblend working on an EeePC, but I had to compile it manually (ie configure/make/make install).

Neither Enblend-Enfuse 3.2 or Enblend 3.0 would compile successfully, they either failed, or actually caused the Eee to reboot. :-\

In the end I got the slightly older 2.5 to work, but I had to run configure multiple times, and then apt-get various libraries that it needed before it would configure happily.  libxmi had to be downloaded and configure/make/make installed itself, since it doesn't seem to be in any obvious repository.  I also had to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to /usr/local/lib.  gcc itself proved a bit difficult, I had to make sure that libc6-dev was also apt-get'd before enblend's configure was happy.

Enblend 2.5 seems to run OK from Hugin, and produces much better panoramas, especially if like me at the moment, your camera doesn't allow you to lock the exposure for multiple shots.

Is the guy in the red jersey the same guy in the red jersey four times?

Across the bridge you've got the same grouping of colours, left to right, red, white, blue, blue at least twice, so they are all repeated. ;D

I love it with panos and people.  I've got a shot of the Thames with the same couple walking towards me on one side of the shot, and away on the other side.  It's almost perfectly symmetric. :)

There were only 2 images stitched to make this one up so unless somebody has managed to get a Faster Than Light  travel method perfected there should only be a maximum of 2 of anybody there .  ;D  The interval between snaps was probably about a minute though.

Less of a panorama and more of a stitched sky.

On the way to the hairyport, we passed more tower blocks like that than I think I've ever seen.  Imagine accommodation for several thousand, parked on top of a monsterously big shopping mall, with hundreds of shops and parking to match.  With trees on the roof.

Like something out of a sci-fi novel it is.

..d

How much ram do you have and which OS do you run Hugin in?

A couple of things to check - on the stitching tab, for in the options for Remapper Nona select "Save cropped images".

Also, when stitching try and crop out any blank space from using the preview.  Hugin 2010.0.0 has an autocrop feature in the fast preview which cuts out all the blank space, this will mean less memory usage when it comes to stitching.

Hope this helps.

Love the top image.

I think I'd like to tour Scotland by bike (also after seeing some of Jaded's photos).

I was in a rush on LEJoG but, apart from midges (a good reason to keep pedalling), really enjoyed the Scottish part.

I've also got an urge to learn to Kayak so I could go camping and island-hopping off the West coast.

I shall be asking for route advice after this PBP malarchy is over.

Agreed. That's a fantastic area for scenery, assuming the weather is kind enough to let you see it!

Having consulted the map, am I correct in assuming that you were hiking, rather than mountain-biking, Jaded?

Yes, I was climbing Cul Beag, the steep way ( half of the climb seemed to be at 45 degrees  ;D ) with my daughter. The rain just missed us and we had some splendid broken sunshine.

Took images for this panorama soon after the Ashmolean re-opened last year.  Thought I'd post given the recent excursion... 37 images were stitched with Microsoft ICE.  I stood on the stairs for so long, I think security were starting to get interested in me...   ;)

I didn't take the (27!) pictures in this, PGTips did, but as his laptop would have cacked itself trying to turn them into a panorama, I did it.

Very good  :)

I've been playing with a few panoramas recently, but my computer has been objecting to excessive numbers of images to stitch. Here's one that has worked:

OK, so my first attempt at a panorama splice.
This is an 8-image splice, covering about 270 degrees at a guess.
A few artefacts, but not too scrappy.

I don't like the look of all that wind slab on the left. I've been over that saddle on off-piste trips. There's probably a lot of good powder over the other side. Guides have been over the Col des Fours, which would be sheltered, and catching a lot of powder.

I'm trying to work out if that's directly behind the cable-car pylon.

I was fairly sure that the cars would work as they were spread out in an almost 180 degree arc, but I didn't know how the buildings behind them would look, but it turned out ok I think.

Very nice Zippers, but, for a panorama that makes you think "Damnit! I'm so jealous. I wish I was there!", then click on the link below. You'll have to scroll along the bottom to see it all. Also has me wondering just how fantastic the view would have been, stood there, taking in a 3600 degree view:

Lots of great stuff in this thread--I'm enjoying it.

This is technically panoramic in format, but not a dramatic wide view. Just playing with the auto-panorama setting.

Very concentric!  There is some great stuff on this thread - thank you all.

Bill, is your view of Grasmere from the road up to Allen Bank, looking down to the Quaker Guest House?  I recognise Seat Sandal.

Coire Lagan, Cuillin Ridge, Skye.
Taken from the top of Sgurr Alasdair, the highest peak on the ridge.

Inspired by a phone camera image of Junior up here last week, I dug out some old B/W photos I took back in around 1982.
That would have been my first trip to the Cuillin, with Edinburgh Uni Mountaineering Club.
This is a series of 11 portrait format images I always intended to physically splice into a panorama, but never did.
These  would have been taken on my Olympus OM-1n, 50mm lens. Ilford FP4. Probably microphen developer, but I can't remember. Matt finish, non-rc single grade paper.
Prints a bit dog-eared and foxed now.

So I've scanned them, and used Hugin software to make the panorama instead.
First OKish pass, the geometry is OK, but more work required on the EV matching.

Played with the geometry to make it more 'rectangular', but so far, I'm inclined to leave it with the jaunty profile; it's actually more true to reality.
I may change the projection and 'rectangularise' it a bit later.

I'm reluctant to crop too heavily just to get a pretty rectangle.
That would lose the summit of Sgurr AlasdairThearlaich, the main peak in the photo, and crop the base of the great An Stac scree slopes, which are iconic of the place.

If you look closely, there are 2 hikers on the flat section to the right of Sgurr Thearlaich, just approaching the last climb up to the main summit.

The black bits can be filled in, content-awarish, negating the need for cropping.

Finally got around to creating it. Taken at about 1600 on the 31.12.2020, as I was up on the hill hiding the dog away from the fireworks down in the valley.

Here's what it looks like when the valley isn't full of frozen fog and snow. Taken pretty much where you can see second tree, where the car in the pano is heading, same farm.

Sorting out the images and deleting a load of crap, found some nice pics.  2017 Torres del Paine National park a view from the south side. Was a good trip , went down late in the season only 2 days with rain out of 9 weeks. Missed the last flight out of Puerto Natales, managed to book a cabin on the next Navimag ferry.  (https://i.imgur.com/plLrszK.jpg)

Uig Beach/Sands/Bay on Lewis.

I getting to like this dronie thing. It can take it's own panos, But these are 3-4 photos, created by stacking 5 exposures (that google photos did for me) and then stitched in Image Composite Editor (ICE) (sadly canned) then cropped in GIMP. I think I could get a wee bit better result but that's a learning curve and much more work and not much gain for only watching the result on laptop screen or mobile. Heck I think these could be printed large and still look brilliant
