It was indeed!  Jamesetta Hawkins, born in LA, later changed her name to Etta James.  She had a fascinating life, and it all shows in her wonderful singing.

Your first guess is along the right lines, but wrong.

Your second guess is completely wrong.

I had to think VERY carefully about the wording of the question...

A little clue is that the film was also a TV series, also from the '80's.
