Riggers' pic looks like a lot of false chanterelle, which are 'of no edible value', but Mal's looks very like a macrolepiota, parasol, which is good eating indeed.

Nicknack has a picture of a shaggy ink cap (the white one) which is also good eating BEFORE it gets to that stage.

Sakvatore, the shaggy parasol is edible, but can cause stomach upsetsin some people. Don't eat it raw. Mal's pictures, I think, show ordinary parasols. Differences are that the ordinary one, which is better eating, has a patterned stipe (stem) while old shaggy has a plain one, and the shaggy bruises reddish when you break the flesh.

As it happens, by the time I'd had put the photo on flickr, had its id confirmed and returned next day to where I'd seen it, I was too late - someone else had harvested it. Whether I would have dared to eat it (i.e. trust what I'd been told on the internet), I don't know.

Don't know what these are. They've taken over the end of a fallen tree in a damp corner of the forest.
[Ed. A bit of googling suggests Sulphur Tuft, aka Clustered Woodlover. 'The "Sulphur Tuft" is bitter and poisonous; consuming it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and convulsions.']

Title: Re: Fungi

Sulphur tuft tends to be a bit more colourful. The shaggy one could be eithe rink cap or parasol in that view. If paeasol, a woody stem, and once the stem (stipe) reaches full height the cap is spherical before opening. The ink cap is more like one of those sausage balloons they blow up to make 'animals' with.

If that is the underside, and the stem has a sort of filigree pattern, and no reddish bruising, it's a parasol.
Title: Re: Fungi
Post by: Salvatore on 22 December, 2011, 11:34:57 pm
It's not the one I photographed a few days ago.

Here is a different view. There's a dip in the middle, not obvious from this photo.

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7170/6556451685_262e988c9c_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner/6556451685/)

As for the parasol/ink cap in my earlier photo, I went the following day to see if it was opening, and it was in pieces, as if someone had smashed it with a stick.
Title: Re: Fungi
Post by: Steph on 22 December, 2011, 11:39:26 pm
That looks like a lactarius of some kind. Not got my book out at the moment, but the central dip is common in that genus. Not usually nice to eat. The gills you photographed, with their depth, would be a good hint of how a parasol looks if white.

I've had an OK few weeks up here.  I've got over a kilo of dried porcini stored away and half of this haul was popped into the freezer. In addition I've got about 5kg of Chanterelles in the freezer plus a load of dried Bay bolete and Slipper Jack.

Know idea what these chaps are:
Apparently, according to my resident expert, they are more likely to be coprinus mycaceous or glistening ink caps because sulphur tufts are yellow and grow in tufts, these look more brown and look to have a more trooping habit. They also look to have a reddish patch on the top of the cap, which sulphur tufts don't have.

A few from our woods and nearby.
This from Pooley Country Park - lots of pristine fairy toadstools there as it is a birch woodland

All the usual suspects were looking forlorn and bedraggled after last week's rain, but this one seems to be thriving in the wet conditions.

I have to say Sarah's pics are exceptional - much better than the snaps on the BBC. I'm guessing a diffused flash of some sort with your really nice macro lens. ANy chance of some photo tips or do we have to do the workshop in the woods?

Oops, only just picked up David's comment. Thank you!

All taken with natural light. I very rarely use flash as it tends to look false no matter what you do with it. I do have ring flash available but don't like the effect. So I kind of look for fungi with nice lighting, then line up a good composition and then take the picture, always bearing in mind what the final result will look like.

I know I could lug a full lighting rig round the woods but a) there is no power, b) it is a faff and c) IMHO nothing compares to natural light anyway.

The 5D3 does exceptionally well at high ISO and looks virtually noise free even at ISO 12500 and above, so rarely need flash anyway.

What is your postprocessing for these? I'd guess they are not straight out of the camera (the contrast is too low between the shadows and the lighting looks to be selectively modified in post - dodging and burning)

Not to mention the advantage of a fantastic macro lens.

Post by: docsquid on 20 December, 2012, 09:34:43 pm
David, I usually use Lightroom. Most of these just have a little tweaking of the histogram using the curve function. The earth star is converted to monochrome and given a slight split tone. The latter one I used one of the creative filters that comes with LR and then tweaked it a bit. I can't remember exactly which one it was.

I just try and make the picture give me the feeling I got when I saw the original. The patterns of colours, light, shade, textures and so on.

On either side of one of the lanes local to me, two big logs (about 3 ft diameter) have been placed across field entrances. These logs are now being colonised by fungi (at least 5 types), and on Friday I went past about an hour before sunset.

I've never seen anything like this before.  The big one is nearly a foot across (and I flipped it over).  There were several others, but this was the largest.

Never seen one.  AFAIK they're no longer edible at that stage.

Just now we have lots of shaggy ink-caps in the garden:

I found the step up rings for my LED Macro Ring Flash, so I might as well try and get out with my new camera this week, and try some fungi photies! Not sure how good the 18-55mm kit lens will be for macro though.

I haven't got any extension tubes, yet...

I would have been grovelling on the forest floor earlier but I've just got back from the world championships in Harrogate and the Wigtown Book Festival, which were both rubbish for spotting fungi.

BTW Lars and Monica send their best wishes (soz - it's taken me over a year to pass them on).

Perhaps not entirely in the spirit of this thread, but I was very excited to find these in the woods next door last autumn:

And very tasty they were too:

I just wish I'd marked the spot where I found them... I can't remember exactly where it was so haven't had a repeat. Oh well.

Here's one I took in situ last autumn - no thoughts of picking this one:

Not entirely sure what it is - maybe a young fly agaric before the spots have developed? The cap was bright and shiny and very round, like a tiny tomato. Unfortunately, my iphone camera was damaged, hence the poor picture quality. I've repaired it now so might get some better pictures next time - though nothing to compete with some of the proper photography shown on this thread.

Saw some interesting specimens in the woods the other day, some I didn't recognise so not sure if they were edible or not, and annoyingly didn't have any means of taking pictures with me. Today's weather means an early morning forage tomorrow might be fruitful...

Some seen today - only phone camera pics and not the most interesting specimens (also it's hard to take pics when the dog is pulling on the lead, desperate to chase squirrels and go down badger setts) but still... any pointers on identification welcome.

7. A cluster of pre-nibbled bay bolete? - when I broke a bit off, it went blue, which seems to be a strong clue here. I know they're supposed to be good eating but I didn't fancy some woodland creature's leftovers.

Do they do the turning blue thing? From the info I can find online, that suggests it's either bay bolete or a toxic lookalike.

Coral fungus. Do you see lots of this about? I spotted a few clusters on my lunchtime walk in the woods today - don't think I've ever seen it IRL before.

Must remember to take a proper camera on my walks. Saw quite a few attractive specimens today, including a few pretty substantial penny buns, which would have made a good lunch except that some other creature had been at them first. Chiz.

Just three clusters in one particular part of the woods, but they are difficult to spot in the fallen leaves.

Citoyen, your red 'tomato' will probably not be a fly agaric. The spots are actually scales, remnants of the characteristic veil that amanitins burst out of as they mature (though they occasionally wash clean). It amy be a Sickener, but I'd need a better look. The blue-turning bolete looks like Erythropus from the colour of the uncut flesh

Pingu, from that angle the shiny ones look like Slippery Jack

My mushroom book is somewhere in the flat, and I am having a brain freeze at the moment...

The blue-turning bolete looks like Erythropus from the colour of the uncut flesh

Thanks for the knowledge. After some reading about the way they grow, I did wonder if the 'tomato' was a fly agaric that had the 'spots' washed off (previously assumed they were something that grew from inside). But yes, I reckon you're on the money with the Sickener - looking at some pics of these online, they very much fit the description of a variety I see regularly.

Erythropus sounds like a strong shout for the bolete too.

I've been doing a fair bit of reading up on fungus lately, trying to get myself better educated for the sake of identifying the many I spot on my walks, but I'm happy to admit my experience is still seriously lacking.

Looks like something had already had a nibble at it. Not me, fortunately! I'm too cautious to eat most of what I find, even if I'm reasonably confident I know what it is. And I know just about enough about mushrooms not to eat anything with white gills. It was a handsome specimen though.

A couple of weekends ago, we walked through a field where there were loads of what I took to be bog standard field mushrooms (agaricus campestris) but I was wary of eating even those. I picked one particularly excellent specimen to bring home, about 20cm across the cap, but bottled out of actually eating it in the end. Didn't take any pictures either, as I forgot the camera.

ETA - just reading up about the panther cap here - https://www.first-nature.com/fungi/amanita-pantherina.php - says it's quite rare in Britain, so I'll call that a good find!

The volva, which forms the white spots on Amanita muscaria as well as pantherina, shows up well in that photo. Think of the 'baby mushroom' as an egg-shape a bit like a straw mushroom, and the egg tearing as the cap emerges. There is a 'false' panther as well (grey spots, grooved ring), but your pic looks like the real deal. Same family as Death Cap and the two Destroying Angels.

Here are some I'm definitely happy to eat, found on my lunchtime walk today - craterellus cornucopioides (https://foragerchef.com/the-horn-of-death-black-trumpet-mushrooms/), pretty much impossible to mistake for anything else, though they're not easy to spot, hiding among the fallen leaves:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50617666991_eb017feced_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2k7ULUp)

This one was a bit more prominent, but still easy to miss if you're not looking for them, because of the dark colour and shady location:
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50617667176_1ff4cc920f_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2k7ULXA)

Once I'd spotted the first one, I quickly found enough to make for a handsome lunch, sautéed in butter and piled on a slice of homemade sourdough. Delicious!

Willow bracket or fire sponge, I think. It's been there for years.
"The top is covered with a dark, often cracked crust, a stem is present only in its infancy. Unlike most fungi it has a hard woody consistency and may persist for many years, building a new surface layer each year. It was prized as kindling material. In Alaska, it is burnt by locals, and the ash (punk ash) is mixed with chewing tobacco to enhance the effect of the nicotine in the tobacco." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phellinus_igniarius)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51499704907_bcc168f01c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2msRs3F)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51499706187_118e7b5032_w.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2msRsqK)

The top of the tree looked healthy, with plenty of leaves, but the lower branches had all broken off, and the stumps of the branches looked hollow. The horizontal lines on the fungus are annual growth ridges.

I happened to be walking past this beech tree last month - except the tree is no  more. The had fungus gradually weakened the trunk over the course of several years and according to the ghillie the storms earlier this year did the rest.

Theoretically edible survivable. Never dared try.  I have had amanita caesarea, but in a restaurant rather than one I'd picked.  Idiot cook ruined it with too much sauce. IME the best sauce for mushrooms is simply cream with salt & pepper.
