Umberto Eco for the less pretentious

I've read Foucault's Pendulum - kind of highbrow, literary Da Vinci Code - but gave up on The Island of the Day Before.

I gave up on that one too.  Baudolino is good though.

It's hard to reconcile an Umberto Eco book with a film with Sean Connery & Christian Slater in the lead roles

But as Ivo said, both book and film are very good

"Baudolino" is a fun book.

A friend of mine has interviewed Eco.  Eco's 'handler' told my friend that all questions had to be submitted in advance.  My friend complied - but wrote them out in Latin.  You may not be surprised to learn that 1) the handler didn't understand Latin 2) he was quite upset and wanted to cancel the interview 3) Eco was impressed and gave my friend the interview, as well as twice the alloted time.

For me the other way round, I enjoyed the Island of the Day before but couldn't force myself to finish the Foucault's Pendulum.

Foucault's Pendulum was a great book.  I particularly enjoyed all chapter intro's which were in other languages including Latin.  A bit pretentious but fun!

Baudolino was pretty good too and although I finished The Island of the Day Before I think it stopped me from buying any more of his books.

We studied his academic stuff at university....semiotics!  Now that's highbrow!
