Anybody for a ride on
31st May / 1st June? 8th June
Charlotte & I will have our new tandem, and it will need an inaugural run.
Gentle ride from London to somewhere with ice cream?
:D
-
If I'm back in the country then yes. I'll have to look and see what day we return.
-
I see you had previously mentioned Windsor in the other thread, as this is only about 7 miles from home I will take a pootle out that way to investigate Ice Cream possibilities. ISTR that they should be good, however I do know that there is a good Fudge shop in Windsor.
Investigations will have to wait until I am back from a long weekend in the Lake District.

Hmmm. So long as it is gentle enough, I think we would be interested. I have a very keen stoker. However, we will need to check diaries
-
Oooh! Gutted :'( Mini Q and I will just be coming back from our hols. Bah.
Up for another date though.

Much as we'd love to, I think this is one we can't make. We will still be in Wales on 31st May and possibly 1st June.
-
Sorry can't make this. Firstly don't have a tandem and secondly will be returning from Wales and then Mr Annie will be having a day out fishing, I think he will deserve a break by then.
-
Ooh! Ooh! What a Good Idea.
Thames path perhaps, or a bit of the Grand Onion? Windsor sounds a good plan, too.
-
:( :( Apologies :( :(
Unable to make that weekend, as I shall be enjoying the company of my son. No doubt he would be wanting to do some tandemming, but I'm not sure he'd be up for such a ride.
I withdraw discreetly, hoping to ride tandem with the new beast soon. :)
-
The Things are busy that weekend too I'm afraid. I'm quite keen to see this new tandem though. We *still* haven't made it up to see JD cycles, or Mercian.

Put me down as a possible.
-
A thought: will you ladies be tandemming it on the WNBR on 7th June?
-
Highly likely, I'd have thought. Why do you ask?
-

Just a thought. I'd like Mrs. Wow to come to the WNBR, but I think it's highly unlikely. A brace of tandems would have been something to see.
-
Mrs Wow can wear what she likes on the WNBR can she not?
We can still have a brace of tandems. Nekkidness is optional :D
-
This is true and I of course will try, but I think it is unlikely that my beloved wife would wish to accompany her nekkid husband down Oxford Street on a tandem. Unless she can borrow a burqa from somewhere...
-
Anybody for a ride on 31st May / 1st June?
That week we are in France at the Tandem Club International Rally.
:( and ;D
Would love to see the Santana though.

Do we have to be on tandems?
-
No.
But if you're on a solo, we reserve the right to point and laugh :D
-
I really think this inaugural ride needs to be scheduled for Brighton on 7/6/08. ::-)
-
Windsor reccy undertaken, there are two options for ice cream:
1) join all the tourists on the river front, cycle parking available. Normal ice creams + 'Mr Whippies'
2) go ~2 miles south into Windsor Great Park to the village shop, normal ice creams, toilet, CTC welcome label benches beside shop or village green available. Away from the traffic and the hordes.
Once more details are confirmed I will happily either ride to the start and back to Windsor or Join you at a half way point to act as a local guide for the Windsor bit.

Matthew, thanks for the recce. General consensus here is: We don't care, so long as there's ice cream! ;D :)

I know, why do you think I went.
I got to do a gentle 20kms with two ice cream breaks :P

It looks like this is being rescheduled for Sunday 8 June 2008.
Hope people can still make it!
-
8th June is now in our diary.
-
That weekend is in our diary. We won't have Superstoker, so will probably be able to take part in the main convoy (at the back, probably :-[ )
-
Well, the Things may be available that weekend, and are very keen on seeing the Santana.
What sort of shape Dobbin is in is another matter. The number of major items on the "need to do" list is growing ever longer (and now includes most of the drive chain :-\), and I daren't even think about the rims (having lost the rear wear indicator before Easter last year and the front not long after)! :-\ :-\ He really, really needs some fettling time before we take him on holiday.
[cunning idea]
Actually, the next major tandem event in the calender *is* going on holiday, so it might be an excuse to do some fettling before 8 June, and treat the ride as a shakedown, with enough time to fix anything else before we go away.
[/cunning idea] ;D ;D

You forgot the Ben & Jerry shop, right opposite Montezuma's. :D

No I had observed that but then you cosmopolitan London types have that combination every where. ;)
Besides that is a pedestrianized road with no cycling between 10am and 4pm (from memory)

Do we have a confirmed meeting place / route for this ride now, or have I just not been paying attention?
-
Bother. HTFB and Adored Stoker---not that she's done much stoking since we've moved to London---are otherwise engaged that day. A shame, because I'd really like to get her out on the roads in town and the company of others would help. Count us in for future events, if my powers of persuasion are up to it.
-

I'm waiting for the Captain's return before I go making important decisions like that ;)
Probably mid-morning from central / west London, if that suits most people?
I was thinking of starting about 11am, and following Graham's route down past Hampton Court, along the river. That would get us there for an easy 2pm for a late lunch / ice cream, leaving time for those who want to do so to ride back again.
-
Hoping to be able to meet up with the peleton at your end destination in Windsor, so will be grateful for a precise final meeting point, when that has been decided.
-
OK. It'll be in town, I'll work out exactly where. YHPM with my mobile number so we can co-ordinate if necessary!

:o
With respect to m'learned friend, this is YACF and on the Peli Birthday ride we arrived at the lunch pub at ten to four, Windsor itself some time later. ;)
-
Yebbut with the draft from all those tandems, we'll be really fast!
OK, maybe 10am start and get there for.... whenever....?
-
So where are we meeting? :D
-
Right, I have down:
Wowbaggers,
Things,
Clarion & Butterfly,
Zipperhead & stoker,
Matthew
Martin109
Anyone else? On solos or otherwise?
There is now a Grand Plan: meet at the top of Spanker's Hill in Richmond Park, 10.00am start. It is then not very far to head out to Windsor for lunch / ice cream.
:D
The 10am start is provisional at the moment.
-
Tandems an' icecreams' an' Wowbaggers an' Things an' everyone!
:D
-
Would have loved to have been there, en Pino, but we're on a Tandem Club run that day. Was working at Shepperton Weir yesterday. Can't work there today, as the river's too high. Have fun, don't fall in.
-
Unfortunately I am otherwise engaged on Sundays,
if you let me know when you are nearing Windsor I may be able to ride up through the Great Park to meet you but there are no guarantees to that.
Liz YHPM with contact details.

Excellent! A plan is formed. :)
See you all on Sunday.

I'd quite like to join you good people if I may, please.

The Wows have to be regarded as very doubtful for this: my griping pains for the past three days have now developed into something... productive. :-X :'(
-
Oh dear. What we loose in Wowbaggers, we'll gain in Jureks :)
Hope you feel better soon, Peter. If it's the Yellow Horror, you have my sympathy. At least you're not onna plane...
:-*

"Loose" is the operative word... :-[

Were it not for the fact that I had the foresight to pack some (disaster preparedness ftw!) I think that I'd have sold my own mother for some Immodium last weekend...
-
Have we got a precise end meeting point in Windsor, which is where I/we will be meeting you?
-
Have fun all - we are definitely out of this.
-

Not yet but it will be somewhere in Windsor town centre that sells ice cream! I will text you on Sunday with where we're planning to be.

:) :) :)
What a fun day. Much fun, good company and fine steeds in wonderful weather.
Charlotte & Liz's new machine is much fun. Joth & I were tempted to try and sneak off with it, but the fear of retribution was too great (and Charlotte would have been stuck wearing Joth's sandals). Thank-you very much for letting us have a try though
Hope to see you all again soon,

Phew. Back home and getting outside the second cup of tea of the day. We may have to rename this thread the "hanging about, fiddling with bikes and not going very fast ride", but I really enjoyed myself nonetheless.
I think Graham should have some rather splendid photos for us all in a few hours, as will Liz, so I shall merely say thank you all for coming along and for your fine company. That ice cream was jolly well deserved, I thought.
Oh, and a special thank you Martin109's lady friend for letting me have a go on her fabulous Newton tricycle.
Sorry about the two wheel thing... :-[
-
Some pictures here (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3891.new#new).
Lots of fun. Thank you everyone for coming along, and also for making my friend Catriona welcome on her first ride over 15 miles.
I heart our new tandem.
:D
-
Thanks for a pleasant afternoon which for me involved pootling round the Great Park to Windsor for an Ice cream, watching some village cricket, crossing the Great Park to the pub, back across the Great Park to Windsor desperately trying to hold the wheel of a tandem (Things on the new one or Zipperhead and Liz on Margret Hilda) fixed tops out before a tandem even if it only has nine gears, more ice cream and finally back through the Great Park home. So 20 miles ~ 15 of which had no cars to worry about. :D
I heart our new tandem.
:D
And I suspect so does Emma and Joth ;)

Firstly, thank you to the tandemistas for granting me day membership to your exclusive circle.
The day was spiffing and memorable for a number of reasons, starting with an early morning E to W jaunt across London to the RV point at Spankers Hill Wood.
Butterfly’s hat (and outfit). Both of which would’ve easily afforded her admission to any wedding reception, had we passed one.
The chance encounter with Emily and Peli atop Spankers Hill as we waited for the arrival of the tandemistas, while they were off to do something to the hills of Surrey.
The sexiness of Liz n’ Charlottes’s Santana. The engineering detail has to be seen in the metal – pics don’t do it enough justice. ‘Tis a very lovely thing.
Hooning like loons around the Diana Fountain in Bushey Park – can we do that again please?
So’s this time I can catch the tandems? ;)
Liz’s friend Catriona – for going the distance, despite (allegedly) having been misled by 50% about the distance, and being on a bicycle which (following a 200m jaunt on it) Butterfly commented along the lines of “I think I’d be looking to kill someone if I’d had to spend the day riding this…..”
Well done Catriona.
The number of times I heard Thing 1 say on descent “We can’t stop here – this is tandem country”.
Graham's fettling interludes - which allowed me to seek cool shelter in the shadows of trees and elsewhere.
Martin109 friend's extraordinary machine in the early evening sunshine.
Oh yes – unless anyone tells me otherwise – a total lack of moton abuse.
Thanks guys for a great day out. 55 miles door to door.
-
It was great fun - thank you thank you thank you all.
Butterfly did look fabulous, and I felt desperately underdressed :-[ Perhaps I should have hired that kilt again....?
The Santana was well worth celebrating, too. :)
We got a train from Staines to Richmond* on the way home, then trundled along happily.
Great to see Jurek unexpectedly (again!) - I think he's a natural shepherd, given the way he looks after trailing riders with patience and care.
Catriona was good fun & good company, and I think she had fun trying out stoking ;D
Hooning around the lake in the Park was fantastic! Shame we had to pause a couple of times to give way to cars (not that we'd have been able to keep C'n'L's wheel even if we had kept going)
And descending into Windsor was fun - as was riding in a peloton of four tandems at around 20mph from Windsor to Staines.
Big  to SouthWest Trains for not batting an eyelid about letting two tandems on a crowded trains; for providing (and advertising) covered and CCTV'd cycle parking at Richmond; and for providing a level exit from Richmond station.
* We bought tickets to Barnes, but got on a train that wasn't going to stop there :-[
-
I think myself accursed...
-
You tandemistas were spotted by Catriona and myself from the windows of a London-bound SouthWest train, as we traversed a level crossing in Windsor.
While you all waited. :D
-
Oh cool! We paused briefly for a train, but it hadn't occurred to me you might be on board. I should've done a Jenny Agutter and waved me hankie ;)
-
The chance encounter with Emily and Peli atop Spankers Hill as we waited for the arrival of the tandemistas, while they were off to do something to the hills of Surrey.
How funny to bump into you all! The first thought to pop into my head on spotting the party (at the point where Emily was ripping my legs off up Spankers Hill) was "Ooh, look, there's a lady off to a wedding... funny place to get hitched" ???.
Sounds like you had a great outing! Emilio and I had a lovely ride out to the Surrey hills, where she continued to rip my legs off. We did over 50 miles in about 3.5 hours, including a few nasty lumps.
Does the new tandem have a name, yet?
-

Thank God you weren't thinking of An American Werewolf in London. :-X
-
That was fantastic fun. :D It was a lovely surprise to see Emily and Peli in the park. The beautiful black Santana :-* :-* :-*. Fantastic job from Catriona on the less than ideal bike when she was unaware of the distance of the excursion. Bushey Park and Windsor Great Park were wonderful and the weather was superb. Ducklings, goslings, damsel flies, dear and the sky larks we could hear but not see :). Beautiful flowers along the way - thousands of roses, rhododendrons and some fragrant honeysuckle. Reaching Ben and Jerry's just in time to finish up their stocks - nom nom nom. Thanks to Martin's Lady friend for the ride on her marvelous trike. Cruising at 20 miles per hour in a line of 4 tandems. Two tandems on a train and finally riding home over-taking a Lotus, a Porshe, a Mercedes SL and lots of other vehicles stuck in traffic - I told them we were faster than them. :P Lots of smiles and waves all day. 8)
Super, super, super day. :D
-
Super, super, super day. :D

It looks like a great day and Butterfly looks glam indeed!
I was vaguely tempted to come and be a solo interloper, but did not hold out much hope of keeping up with a brace of tandems (especially on the downhills!) ;D
-

Excellent! I was looking out for you, and made out some bikes on board, but I may have forgotten to maintain the wildly optimistic wave at the grubby windows.
The number of times I heard Thing 1 say on descent “We can’t stop here – this is tandem country”. Thumbs Up
;D ;D Sometimes tandeming on rolling roads just demands silliness.
Great day out. Many many thanks C&L for arranging it, and letting us play on their newest.
On the downside, having spent all weekend cycling, I'm now constantly peckish. And our kitchen has just been stocked up with Cadbury's Cream Eggs (!). I'm not sure how long I will be able to resist....... :-\ >:( :D ::-)

You'd have been fine!
The 30 miles out to Windsor took us 7 hours! :D
(Okay, that included fettling stops, rest stops, beer stop, food stop, photo stops, biscuit stops... you get the idea)
The 30 miles back took me & C. 1hr 50 mins. ;D
