Is that a 700C wheel? I thought the Adventure only came with a 26" wheel - or did Kevin give you my* rear triangle?

*He's been promising to source me a T rear triangle so I can upgrade Regina to a larger rear wheel. I'll lose the suspension but that doesn't bother me....

Aha - an email from Kevin tells me that the Adventure rear end can accommodate either a 26" or a 700C wheel.

And he's given me some possibilities for upgrading Regina....

i might replace the 700c rim with a 26 one soon as there is a better choice of tyres in that size .
i have been out for 2 rides today . first over to windsor to ride with a frend who rides a qnt and has ms and his young son . we followed ncn4 then rode round the dorney rowing lake to have a feed at the walled garden centre . and then back home to slough via windsor . then this evening pete 46 of this parish can over with his trice t and after a little fettling we rode out to the ford near fulmer where part of chitty chitty bang bang was filmed .the fettling on pete46's trike had not worked so we rode back on the roads rather than pottering through black park as i had planned. as i did not have the satmap on to day i am not sure how far today but probably around 30 miles in total

kevin says he hopes to have the new chainset to me on thursday or friday so i will be able to go and play in the hill over the weekend

i am learning to get the best out of the short cranks and i am not pushing so much so my knees are happier today . i also feel that i am going a little faster than i was yesterday . i will have the satmap on next time

It did occur to me that the Big Apple we all seem to use on the 20" rear wheel rolls extremely well, obviously you haven't got that on the 700c rear, do you feel that maybe that might be part of it.
PS: does the Satmap do average speed etc ?

pete 46 of this parish has a trice t26 and found with a big apple on the rear he was suffering from a lack of grip . he has put a swalbe supreme on the back and that has inporved things apparently. i and getting a little faster as i am adapting to the short cranks. only about 8 miles of pottering around town today .

that's a friend who is not on here's drive . he rides a qnt and he aways has a grip problem. strangely the panracer 38 on the adventure seems to cope quite well

Odd, as you know (Chris) I ride all year round like you, my only way of getting to work in fact, in all weathers including Ice and Snow (they deserve capitals) I also have taken the 20 rear end Q-NT off road on Sustrans route and as long as I pedal smoothly and in a low enough gear don't really have any grip problems.

i have a big apple on my qnt at present and it grips ok in most conditions except for going up hills in ice or damp wet climbs. pete 46 found this to be worse on his 26" wheel .i use a marathon supreme s when the roads are more likely to stay damp and a marathon winter spiked tyre if we get some nice ice and snow

i will have the lower chainrings on wednesday or thursday d tek says

sram 3 speed trigger so i can get the canned gears working properly

. i had a little 34 mile potter out to twyford and then back via maidenhead via ncn 4 . teamonster ,let me know when you are doing your breakfast run and i will try and join you

Yes it is bloody irritating but what one has to remember is that Kevin does a lot of work with a diverse ammount of groups/people and how the hell he manages to have a personal life I do not know as he is a one man band, trying to fit everything into the right boxes (so to speak), have patience, she'll be right

i have got a cheap 152 triple steel ringed chainset to use until the proper set arrives i have a rear 26/599 rim on order which should be hear this week . my tame cycle mechanic will assist the assembly of most of the bits on thursday leaving the rebuilding of the rear wheel till after the milldenhall rally when he should have more time. i did a 26.6 mile ride with pete46 of this parish yesterday using a fair amount of ncn4 and other cycleways. the ave was 8.2 at maidenhead where we had a refuelling stop . after more cycleways and a detour up to farnham pump on the return to slough i found i had added another .5 mph to the ave . that's getting close to 9mph 0n a stop start route

. for me that is pleasing. by the end of the week i should have a good feel for what the modified gearing is like and go and play in the hills . the bottom gear should be around 12 " neil at trice advices me but i will try not to go that low as the hub gear might not like it. i have got weak legs so if i go gently it might be fun to try for a experiment

. i was given a halfrauds rear mudguard to go on the back and although it is ok ish if i go over a cattle grid or a big bump the stays detach from the mudguard and i have to stop and push the fittings back together again

the run out to milldenhall was fine . i selected gear 1 in the can and used that range of gears . i was running at a ave of 6.5 which is a mile a hour slower than the qnt but i put that down to the short cranks .on the other hand my knees were much happier

. overall the new gearing is giving a great low range for hill climbing and plenty of big gears for the downhill s . the next stage is to get the rear wheel rebuilt with a 26" rim and fit standard marathon greens all round. i was suffering from sore feet on the return run due to the fact i need to get some new ones so i was slower on the way home

.my speed in due to my disablement and the gearing set up this way if you are able bodied should give the range to climb anything and and keep on peddling as long as you wish to downhill

i have now fitted a sram 3/9 changer and the system works very slickly .it has a very light action and seems a joy to use.

i also have been playing with the boom length and now seem to be going faster .when i sort the satmap mounting i will if it is just me

. i am having the 26 rear rim , marathon tyres and disc parking/ drag brake fitted next thursday .i am going to mount the satmap on the bottle cage mounts . it is not the most convenient place but i do not have a lot of choice . i have fixed a pair of cheap led rear lights to the mirror mounts and will try to make a screen to shield them from me . i have not found them particularly distracting but still . they do define the width of the trike well and are easy to turn on and off while riding.

I fitted the pivoting version of the Minoura space bar to the post on the boom. It enabled me to fit two bottle cages as well as the GPS.

For gps mount, I've put a quil stem adapter

Into the front gear mech post, and attached a stem to that "upside down", so that it is probably about 20degrees off vertical. GPS mount is ty wrapped to that.

Hi Chris, could I suggest if you have thoughts about the width of your trike being apparent to vehicles from behind that using a pair of rear panniers and using one of cateyes many light mounts (we use the clip to go onto a D ring on the rear of ours) makes a three rear light set up that has vehicles slowing down from afar, we use AU1100 and two of the older AU1000 (I think).

There is a weak point with this design of SpaceGrip.

There is a small tab at the end of the "arm" where the cross bar fits.

This is already weakened by the 90 degree bend, it then takes all the weight and stress of the light(s) and simply isn't strong enough.

It is only a matter of time before this tab breaks dumping your lights in the road!

An ordinary Space Grip is far more robust and will take the strain

d tek sent me a old minoura bar and it failed after a month with a light pair of electron lights on it . i have now fitted the front bar from the new design minoura space bar and bolted it to the top bottle mount on the gear mech post.

i have mounted the ice mirrior bars on the bottom of the handlebars to carry a bell

and the disc ,hand/drag brake lever.

in the last few weeks i have finally got the machine to fit me comfotable and a ride out to dinton pastures proved that my ave is up by around 1mph on the flat compared to my qnt .unfortunately my knees are now wearing out my pyiso tells me and if i push to hard i am getting pain in them so i am taking very gently now to try to make them last as long as i can.
the sram dual drive is running well and is giving my a great range of gears .
when i had the new 26 rim fitted i also fitted marathon green 1.5 tyres all round but found on the thames meander ride that it felt hard work ,like ridding through treacle .the next day i found a specialised nimbus armadillo tyre .they come in 2 weights and this is the lighter one .i was going to try it with the original marathon racers but after trying it with the m greens it was so much easier on my legs the i left the greens on .i will try the marathon supreme's on the front next year
i have probably ridden around 650 miles now
