My bike felt a bit funny this morning
« on: 06 April, 2011, 08:01:51 pm »
Not too strange though, and overtaking the traffic going round Wandsworth Bridge Roundabout it still felt ok, but on the way home it was nagging at me. Nothing big that I could put my finger on, but something wasn't quite right so I had a look when I got home....

Well my trusty Pompino, you've served me well and been very comfortable for so many miles, so I'll have to go any get another one tomorrow.

A bit of parcel tape will sort it. Or else araldite and newspaper.  :)

Seriously, wot Basil said - it's an impressive failure!

Wrap buff around tube, pull tight, fasten with a knot, hey presto!

What's the frame? And how old is it?

I'm alarmed how many frame cracks people experience...

Mind you, I wouldn't want to be Zipperhead's frame.  It gets a lot of torque shoved through it...

Well, if Wooly can't find your crack, would you like me to come round and have a close look for it?  :o :o

It's a Pompino, I can't remember how old it is, but it must be quite old (the complete bike cost very little at the time)

Is there a frame warranty?

Odd, isn't it, how all the photos of broken frames show steel or titanium frames?  Possibly a reflection of the fact that few people here ride aluminium frames and even fewer put hard miles on carbon frames, but it gives the lie to the "steel/titanium is a frame for life" thing.

It was probably overheated during welding, or DN6 isn't quite as heat tolerant as other tubing.

Two years for steel - I'm well past that.

Can't be old! Pompino hasn't been around long enough for there to be old Pompinos.

9 years ?

Mine's over 8.

If you don't put gloop down the tubes, though, they rust like crazy from the inside.  The early ones also had a wacky seat clamp arrangement that let water in though the slot in the seat tube.

My guess would be either a construction fault, as RZ said, or corrosion.

A slot at the front of the seat tube? Mine has (had?) one of those.
