Don't Keep to the Road 100 km - North Yorks Moors, 29/04/2017
« on: 20 December, 2016, 01:44:05 am »
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present to you the inaugural Brevet Unpopulaire, a new category of event to mark out rides which simply fail to merit the Populaire tag.

115 (and a bit) kilometres of bastard hills around the North Yorks Moors, including offroad climbs and descents, deserted moors, abandoned railway lines, hidden valleys, forestry trails, and at least one pub which is more than a little reminiscent of a certain werewolf movie...

There will also be AAA points.

Tour de Yorkshire that weekend Mr Bond informs me.  Could affect accommodation prices & availability.

Probably not around Northallerton/Thirsk - the route doesn't swing close enough.

Come up for the ride and make a weekend of it ;)

What it probably does mean though is my plan to get the train up on the morning is probably scuppered though, back to the drawing board.

ECE? ;)

The TdY will make it a bit tricky - I shouldn't think trains from York to Thirsk or Northallerton will be affected as that's nowhere near the route, but west-east trains may be affected, especially around Leeds (the race starts in Otley Tadcaster that day).

There is some camping available at the start, but that's really aimed at the riders on the 300. There's a campsite about half a mile away (virtually behind the local pub!)

It did occur, either end for a 400, and then reality hit.

There's a campsite about half a mile away (virtually behind the local pub!)

Whereas that sounds like a much better idea.

Now, new tyres for the Sabbath or the mountain bike? Decisions, decisions.

Erm...

The 2nd Stage of the TdY starts in Tadcaster in 2017, not Otley. Otley was the 2016 start.

This means that trains to York will also be majorly affected, as well as Leeds, given that Tad is approx. halfway between the two.
Also bear in mind that the Saturday stage is the double-header with the women's race going out around 8 am and the men's in the afternoon. This may affect anyone ECEing it from the Leeds direction, as you may be crossing the route at around the same time - especially if your route involves Pateley Bridge, Lofthouse and Trapping Hill Lane/Jordan's Moss, as you'll find a peleton's worth of fast women up your rear (depends if you like that sort of thing!!)  ;) ;) :jurek:

D'oh. I did know that! Still shouldn't affect people travelling locally to this. Seriously, I wouldn't ECE this one - there's a minimum speed of 10 kph for a reason!

This looks like it'll make a nice 200 km from York

The question is, do I swap road and CX tyres at the start, or do I use the same set all the way?

Any one who is going to camp out for this, there is space in our back garden (and we may be able to offer a dining room floor). We live only about 4 miles from the start. As to whether I am going to take part, ask me again after Xmas!

Deano, I'm definitely keen (though may need to be in the area earlier, during April school hols).  Any thoughts on a rough minimum tyre size/spec - I have 32mm Paselas I could use on my steel bike, avec 36h sputniks & decent granny gear.

I think it's doable on road tyres - just means more walking**. FWIW, I managed to get bogged down a couple of times even with 35mm CX tyres, last week.

It's a super ride - proper mental!

Dean, are you providing medals for anyone who can prove a clear round (no walks)?

** ETA: Changed my mind. The tyres might stand it, but some sections are proper rocky, so road-wheels might suffer spoke breakages.

When I rode, I had a Vittoria Randonneur on the rear, and a Pasela on the front. Riding fixed and being a bit overgeared was more of an issue than traction!

Maybe I'll leave some cash behind the bar at the Lion for anyone who gets up the Incline without walking - it wouldn't have to be much.

Come on Chris, show us your video!

Great video! An excellent advert for everything described above. My heart went faint at the thought of it - not one for me, but I'm sure many will revel in it.

Sounds fine to me, though it depends on your skill/confidence etc. I'd expect to walk some parts with those tyres, but everything's a compromise.

You're welcome to ride on a different date if you can't make the calendar event - the gpx is on the event calendar page, or you can download it from here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17726701

Or here for a slightly different version of the route which would make more sense if you were starting at Northallerton: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16696816

That's a brilliant poster and deserves to be up in all the local shops. I reckon Westbrook's will want to sell some CX bikes on the back of an event like this. Brevet Unpopulaire - brilliant!

That just looks like a normal audax, but where Lindsay did the routing  ;D

Actually, looked ace.

I've not really fancied doing any audax, until this.

Is the routefinding realistic without gpx?

My cdf came with some 35mm CX tyres.
