Cat eye volt 300 front official

It seems the Cateye volt 300 is the new official Brompton battery front lamp (see on Brompton Bike builder page):

it has a fork/brake mounting bracket so as to remain in place when folded, although I would also fit a handlebar bracket for when using the lamp (and use the fork one for storage....)

I think other cateye lamps might fit*: so perhaps one of their German approved 2AA cell models would allow full law-abiding-ness for the keen  :) ...

*assuming fork bracket sold separately.

It's a very good light with stonking battery life and I use one for my commute; but hasn't it been superseded by the Volt 400 (which is much the same light certainly not 33% brighter) ?

it has the same mount as all the recent Cateyes I think mine came with a Velcro helmet bracket which could be adapted for a front fork quite easily

Is the beam shaped//cutoff like a dipped headlamp / German approved bike lamp style?

Beam pattern shown on http://road.cc/content/review/108798-cateye-volt-300-front-light suggests not :(

Oh wait, that's for the 400.  Still, those optics look pretty conical to me...

I have an Axa German approved lamp with conical Internal reflection optics: the beam is roundish but when shone at ground becomes dimmer closer to cyclist to avoid over exposure of near field.

Yeah, it's hard to tell without a proper comparison.  That's why those road.cc reviews are good - it's just a shame that they only seem interested in reviewing battery lights with mostly symmetrical beams.

Cateye  of course offer the  Germans a nice Stzvo approved beam Volt:

why can't they sell them here (due to EU equiv clause...) too

They won't sell them here because they want to wind up  paranoid obsessive cyclists who are disproportionately concerned about blinding motorists with their puny lights.  You should use a conical beam, it'll be good for your soul.

I've got a Volt 300 which is still going strong after 2.5 years.  It's an excellent light.

I like the way German has adopted "clever" as an adjective with not quite the same meaning as it has in English. Also "Frontlicht".
