Title: Removing DRM from old iTunes files?
Post by: Mr Larrington on 11 March, 2019, 01:21:34 am
I have in my temporary custody a Several of M4P audio and M4V video files from the days when Apple still slapped DRM on stuff from the iTunes store.  They will not play on any computer in either my or Miss von Brandenburg's possession, because the devices are not associated with the e-mail address used to purchase them, said address has been out of use for about a decade, neither of us knows the password and the original purchaser is dead.  Ripping them to CD doesn't work either, for the same reason.  Any ideas?

Sorted yet?

There are a few programs that can remove the DRM, used one ages ago to backup an old ipod.

The only de-DRM programs I can find cost actual money for anything other than a trial version which doesn't work properly and/or tries to install crapware all over your PC.  I have resorted to cheating sourcing copies of the offending tracks elsewhere.  Mostly successfully.  Does anyone have a copy of the 10th Anniversary Edition of the debut album of The Presidents Of The United States Of America?

How are you ripping them to CD? as mp3 (or similar) or as audio files in a CD format kind of way?

Tried that: iTunes wouldn't let me because they're not owned by my iTunes account.  And not-iTunes said "this is not a media file I recognise".

Ah, so from that I’m guessing you can’t even play therm?

If you could you could look at an app to capture the audio as it plays (AudioHijack or similar)

That might be the one we have. I'll try to remember to check when I get home.

Our copy on the Squeezebox has the bonus tracks but not the demos. I don't know if the demos are on the CD (which is squirrelled away somewhere in the loft).

I think what we have here is a Learning Opportunity.  As they might call it at the Electronic Frontier Foundation...
