Summer 200s
« on: 09 November, 2010, 09:16:26 am »
It used to be (not so very long ago) that there were very few BR events through the winter months.  It was the main reason why I put Upper Thames into the calendar in November.  With the popularity of the RRTY demand for winter events has rocketed, and looking at the calendar as currently published, there are now more 200k events available in the winter months than there are in the summer.

OK, I know that the coming year is distorted by the demands of PBP, and that there may be more events in planning (not so long ago all events had to be in the calendar by 30th Sept).  But the numbers are interesting, at least to me as one who normally only rides 200s and the occasional 300.  Hopefully there will be more 200s appearing, else demand for perms will pick up.

Nov 10 - 6 200s (4 last weekend) plus darts
Dec 10 - 5 200s
Jan 11 - 6 200s
Feb 11 - 9 200s
Mar 11 - 23 200s
Apr 11 - 13 200s
May 11 - 7 200s
Jun 11 - 5 200s (and 15 600s)
Jul 11 - 7 200s

You could say that the demand for 600s and other PBP qualifying events has "rocketed"

Or you could say that in PBP year more riders / organisers have other priorities than 200s

What I find bizzare is that most of the 600s are on the same day.

No they're not. Unless you mean they're mostly on a Saturday.

+1.

There are 17 different 600’s in the AUK calendar for next year (ignoring “variations on a theme” with the BCM etc).

They are spread as follows –

14th May : 1
21st May : 1
28th May : 3
4th June : 3
11th June : 6
15th June : 1
18th June : 2

A reasonable amount of thought and planning has gone into providing riders with 7 different opportunities to ride a qualifying 600 in 2011.

There are more events.  I noticed that I had not set the risk assessment for my events which is a requirement for it to appear in the public calendar.  So currently missing on 9th July are
200km Down The British
100km Across Rhondda
Will appear soon.

On a similar theme, it is my perception (which means that I've done no actual research to get hard facts) that the early season 200s attract larger fields than those later in the year as everyone gets ... fed up/tired/on holiday/into DIYs/spoilt for choice by clashing events

(that last one seems to be counter-intuitive to the general theme of a down turn in the summer)

I'm sure (or at least hopeful!) that there will be more 200s by the time the summer arrives.

I know (or at least, I think I know) that AUK was first formed to provide a means of qualification for PBP, and thus fully understand that PBP is a priority.  I just think AUK has become a lot more, and the overbearing presence of PBP is, I think, going to grate a bit in time.

Don't get me wrong - I'm an admirer of those who set out to do this great ride, whether they complete or not.  And I shall be following progress avidly when it's happening.  It's just that I don't wish to take part myself, and hope that the needs of people like me (which is actually the majority of the AUK membership these days) won't be completely subsumed.

The "West Bay & Back" 200 should be back in the calendar soon, which will be on 7th Aug. As soon as I have sorted out the RA & new infos.

It'll be either "a gentle warm up for PBP" or "a trip to the sea for those not doing PBP". Which do you think Phil ?

It's little brother "Mini-Tour of Blackmore Vale and Cranbourne Chase" will also be there for what is apparently the even greater majority.

I've submitted a spring 200 (my first) not a BRM just a 200; hoping people will do it as an easy* flat extra ride.

I think 200s have always been thin on the ground in summer.
It is a bit of a missed opportunity - for a '200 for softies' type event, ditto 300, ie a 300 easily rideable all in daylight - alternatively an Overnight 200 would be another good project I think.

Cue to confirm that the Fairies Flat Five will be on July 4th next year. Final admin needed on the 150, 100 and 50 before they go on line.

A weekend double bill of 300s would be good too. Some (most?) will ride the first 300. Some of those will ride the 2nd 300 and there will probably be a few that only ride the 2nd 300 too.
A bit like the old Elenith/Hardboiled weekend, but without the driving inbetween and a bit more sleep.

I agree. The 200km do run a little thin during the summer period. I d love to organise a Manchester / Stockport 200km calender event during the summer period, though its something I would not want full responsibility for. So if anyone fancies sharing the work for a 200km calender event in the Manchester / Stockport area over Shropshire maybe ? pm me  :)

Sorry, been meaning to say something about this for a couple of days. Putting my events sec hat (perhaps for one last time...)

DON'T PANIC!

We had a huge push on getting all the BRM events published earlier in the year, so we had as full a calendar as possible for PBP qualification. As a result, the calendar looks rather BRM heavy. However there are a lot of BR events awaiting publication, and these are slowly trickling into the calendar. We don’t publish anymore until we have all the info we need, so this is skewing the calendar a bit too.

Also, I’m handling enquiries from quite a few new organisers. So, you’re likely to see some brand new events in 2011. As an example, Hereford Wheelers are running what look to be some great events in July, which will be published pretty soon.
