BBC has been showing it live so far. Although the men's TT was shown on the channel 301. AFAIK both road races are to be shown live too.

To save all that tedious mucking around in hyperspacetrying to find the red button channel it's on Freeview 301.

I've just found this on the BBC. The conditions are awful - a bit like those Nikki and I had to contend with on our way to Caernarfon last month. At least we had sensible tyres and a good load of camping kit to help with the bike's stability.

I've been on watching, on and off, since the start. It is currently "slightly damp" weather conditions compared to earlier! Roughly 1/3 of the field has bailed.   :P

Bailed  ??? I think most of them have crashed more than once, i think they are up to around 10 crashes until now.  :o

Including Wiggo, Cav and Froome. There won't be a Brit WC this year...

All GB except Thomas so far (and they aren't sure about him.

He retired as well.

There has just been another crash knocking out some key Italians, including Nibali. On balance, although they are disappointed now, I reckon it has turned into a very good day for GB to make a strategic withdrawal.

Certainly was. Did you get the feeling that Rodriguez was pleading to be allowed to win when Costa caught him at 500m to go?

I don't know. I couldn't work out what they were talking about. I don't suppose it was "How far to Paper Mill Lock? I could murder a bit of Margaret's fruit-and-chocolate flapjack!"

I think they knew that anyway and bailed early to save energy/avoid crashes.

Can't win everything!

Excellent final lap. Bad luck on Nibali, but the Spaniards were a pretty strong pair, you feel they would have done well even without the Italian mishaps. Nice to have such an uncertain outcome.
(EDIT: I've rather overlooked the portuguese chap! But basically the spanish pair did all the damage, I reckon Nibali would have won it without them.)
Good tweet from Hutch:
"Was hoping, when Costa and Rodriguez had that chat, that they were going to pick a side of the road each, and man it out Simpson/Altig style"

Agree with Mattc.

Brits couldn't handle the rain?   I mean please.

Even big fellas like Cancellara (who was in the TT also) made it to within a few km of a sprint before being left by the climbers.  I'm not a fan of "it didn't look like I was going to win it so I gave up" attitude, not when you have your fans stood in the rain all day cheering for you.

It's been a few years since I thought "meh" at any of Team GB cyclists but...meh.

I've mentioned this a few times today and have been put down for saying it. When the split happened and GB knew they had no chance of clawing back the time they packed in. Its poor sportsmanship towards the other competitors and bad form for the fans that bothered to turn out in the pouring rain to watch them.

I much prefer the women's racing anyway, they always give it all and keep going. The women's race was great.

I wasn't expecting much from the Brits so didn't really care too much about their (lack of) performance.  It certainly didn't detract from the exciting finale.

Pre race the conjecture was about how open it was and that the parcours suited climbers and puncheurs alike, as well as the power-houses like Cancellara and Sagan, with the fairly flat last 5km meaning that any of those who made it to the end and who could sprint a bit would have the advantage.  It turned out more to be a route for in-form climbers, positions 2-4 being taken by riders who finished 2-4 in that very hilly Vuelta.

Nibali was very impressive just to get back after his crash, even if he had a bit of a helping hand.  But to be sitting by the side of the road one moment, and then being one of the 4 in the decisive split a few minutes later must have added just one more 'what-if?' to a long list he could compile.

How cool was Rui Costa?  To leave it that late but to make the jump decisive enough when he left Nibali and Valverde behind took some guts and a not a little play-acting when Nibali was trying to get him to work.

I don't know what to make of the Spaniards.  Given those cards you would have thought they should have won the hand.  Once Rodriguez was caught wasn't in their interests to try and make it a sprint for Valverde?  Or has he lost his finishing punch over the years?  I still feel a bit sorry for Rodriguez though - yet another 'close but no cigar'.

Yes, well he did mess up the decent on the last lap rather spectacularly, but had the presence of mind to get his fallen bike off the racing line for any following groups.

And to fall on the grass banking rather than the tarmac.

And to fall on the grass banking rather than the tarmac.
Only cos he rode off the road - and grass banking was what came next!

(still, I think he was pretty unlucky, and did indeed show good presence of mind )
