Title: what happened to photobucket?
Post by: Blodwyn Pig on 30 June, 2017, 08:46:46 am
Hi all, all my images seem to now be blocked, it says  PB does not allow 3rd party hosting at my current  account level, and its asking me to upgrade from free to 500 PLUS at a cost of $399.     Whats happened, is this a scam, a virus or PB just being greedy?

Something similar happened to me a while ago. Now it just doesn't want to work.

it says PB have revised its terms on 28 june,  and NO 3rd party hosting unless you have the 500 plus account??  No more hosting from the free account AT ALL..   What other free and, quicker sites are there out there.

Someone on another forum had the same issue. I use Flickr for hosting photos with no issues.

I use imgur.com. Seems to work OK

First thing that worried me was that any picture I've posted here will have disappeared.  Nope That seems OK.

Now I've finally got out of bed, I've gone to the site on my lap-top.  Messy, advert heavy, but still ok.

Next, a test.

Hmm.  Well I can see it.  I assume everyone else can?

It could only be a matter of time Basil.  My photos have disappeared off yacf and been replaced with this:

As others have said, it would appear Photobucket want $399 to upgrade my account so I can do third party hosting.  I don't mind paying some money but not that much.

As others have said, it would appear Photobucket want $399 to upgrade my account so I can do third party hosting.  I don't mind paying some money but not that much.

Then you might be interested in ImageShack (https://imageshack.com/upgrade), which I use. It’s $3.99 per month, payable by PayPal (which takes care of the currency conversion).

I used it when it was free, until ImageShack did what Photobucket is doing now. At the time it had an awful user interface and viewer experience, again like Photobucket does now. However, when they started charging they greatly simplified everything, removed the ad infestation, and generally made it a nice thing to use. So I reluctantly coughed up the fee ($1.99 a month then).

All of these free services will eventually go under, lose your data, or start charging overnight.

Your best bet if you don’t want to pay is probably Flickr, since it’s massive, owned by a semi-reputable company, and used by serious photographers (who would sue if Flickr did something too crazy).

Click on the picture in your Flickr account.

Click on 'Share Photo' - an arrow to the right of your picture.

Select 'BBCode' then copy and paste the resulting code into your post on YACF like so:

How many pictures have you uploaded to Photobucket?

My understanding from reading comments elsewhere is that it's the higher bandwidth accounts that have been cacked by PB, but they will get around to the small fry in due course. I've only uploaded a handful of pictures to to PB for posts in the For Sale boards, and at the moment, I can see hot-linked pictures and the ones I've only linked to (though I need to remember to disable my adblocker first).

With the amount of people complaining about PB and being locked out, I'd say get your photos off unless you have a backup and move to someone like flickr.

Photobucket has been awful for a long time, I gave up, it's blasts advertising and pop-ups at you like a hyperactive porn site and should you survive that onslaught the pictures are less, erm, interesting. There's no shortage of frankly better alternatives.

I always have a backup. I keep nothing on the web that I don't have a copy & preferably a few copies) on some media I can lay my hands on.

Amazon and eBay images broken by Photobucket's 'ransom demand' (http://http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40492668)

Quote
Thousands of images promoting goods sold on Amazon and other shopping sites have been removed after a photo-sharing service changed its terms.
Ebay and Etsy have also been affected, in addition to many forums and blogs.
The problem has been caused by Photobucket introducing a charge for allowing images hosted on its platform to be embedded into third-party sites.
The company caught many of its members unaware with the change, prompting some to accuse it of holding them to ransom.
Denver-based Photobucket is now seeking a $399 (£309) annual fee from those who wish to continue using it for "third-party hosting" and is facing a social media backlash as a consequence.
The BBC received an automated response when it tried to contact the company and is still seeking comment.

Financial difficulties?   Anything I have on PB is expendable.

Money grabbing donkey felching twats.

If you try and view the 'John's Bikes Gallery' thread, the whole fucking lot has disappeared.

Well, sorry but if you think I'm forking out that kind of money for the privelege of having a few pics available for teh funniez you've got another thing coming.

Fuck off. Fuck right off and when you've finished fucking off, fuck off a bit more. Hope your servers get hacked by whoever has taken over from the Eastern European mafia . . .

Right. off to transfer all the images to $somewhere else

I feel your pain.
I'm interested to see how photobucket's move pans out amongst the other image hosting sites.
I pay a nominal sum to host my pics on flickrpro - and am happy ( I don't actually like it - it is quite clunky)   to do so. - Nothing like the fee photobucket are asking for.

How does photobucket know if an image is being hotlinked vs whether it is being requested to show in a page on its own site?...
I thought this was done via a 'referrer' HTTP header. Right?

So could you 'spoof' this header? You would require the website's (i.e. the one that wants to display the image) and/or possibly even the browser's, co-operation - but if I am requesting any images from photobucket, I set the referrer header to photobucket, would it serve up the image? Would it require the browser's co-operation, or just the site's?

What if you just request the image on its own - say by pasting its URL (ending in .jpg) into the address bar, or using curl?

I started the laborious task of restoring photos to my posts.  However, when I got back to early April 2017, I find that the photofuckit stored shots are still visible.  Or they are to me.
Are they working through each file one by one, or do you think the older ones will survive?

For instance, I can still see this photofuckit hosted item.

I can.

Mine are still visible too, or at least all those I've checked. I figured it was because I use relatively little storage (not that many images, screen resolution (800x600 etc) only, so they haven't got round to me yet. I've had the warning email
There should be a photo visible below
I host the photos I post here on photobucket

I can see that just fine. For now.

I'm in a similar situation to you - I've had the shakedown email, but my pictures that I've hot-linked in classifieds posts are still visible.

I will probably log in to PB just one more time, in order to nuke my account, because given that I'm only using on-line hosting for pictures of bits that I'm selling, the number of pictures and the achievable resale value of said parts etc does not justify what PB are demanding in order for me to hot-link pictures.

They can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned.

They seem to be working through them very slowly.  I've replaced (nearly) everything back to Jan 2016 by transferring the original file to Flickr, but everything prior to that is still visible even though it's on PhotoFuckit.

I'll have another session in a week or so as they catch up.
