I'm foregoing the delights of sitting in the White Bear all day (stamping Brevet Cards with an increasingly wanton abandon) and instead I'm riding this 2018 edition.
What is the alcohol limit for cycling?

Just enough to allow you to keep your balance.
Too much and you're going to fall over.
HTH...
-
I know my limit but the problem is that I pass out before I reach it.
-
I think I'm baking again- should I make sure I produce something that soaks up the beer?

I think you just refuse to blow, try to remain upright...dance on the white line, don't try to walk it.
-
I have to say, the report on Arrivee for this was awesome... really makes you want to ride it.
Sadly it's a bit too far for me for a day trip and I think I've run out of brownie points for overnight stays... :P

me too sadly (and the first train from Edinburgh Saturday gets into Darlo 0758....Id not travel to an event with anything less than about an hours buffer)
-
Been DNS (twice!) for this event, so its third time lucky hopefully and entered.
Some very good rates at the Premier Inn by the start at the moment.

I was just in Masham last week arranging the pub control. The things I do for AUK...
FTR, three pints is the maximum anyone's had at Masham. Or possibly four - their memory was a little vague on that point.
I've placed an order for less wind than last year, but that'll probably guarantee you'll all get rained on.

If I didn't know the context (from being on the ride), I'd say that picture is a perfect representation of what happens if you have more than three pints at Masham. (And you'd also be seriously lost.)

I'm swapping with you. I rode last year and I will be stamping cards in Masham this time.

I would definitely be riding if I weren't on the other side of the world this year, so I nominate Graeme should be my nominated representative and and as such should drink my three pints of Old P as well as his own.
-
No problem sir. PayPal 'friend' transfer would be the best way to send me your beer money. :-S

Again, I should point out that I'm fairly sure Gastone Nencini and Maîtres Jacques didn't come over to ride the original. But you never know... https://audaxdarleaux.wordpress.com/2016/07/12/peculier-old-200/

Entered and booked Travelodge for £32 ;D Couldn't resist as it's one of my favourite beers.
-
M'in - It'll be my first 200 for over a year so I'll probably be on Lanterne Rouge duties
-
As it was my first ever Audax in 2017, I guess I can try it again. Is it the same route as last year?
-
Aye, it's the same route (excepting any road closures).
I did think of changing to include more pit villages, or more hills, but in the end I left it as it is. It's a good route.
-
If it ain't broke don't fix it. It's a really good route.
(From someone who was born in Darlo, grew up in Richmond and lives in Ripon so may be a little bit biased.)
I'm in.
-
Looking forward to this one, love that part of the world.
Anybody going for a pint afterwards?
-
I’ll be there for a pint or two, having booked the Travelodge for afterwards.
Looking forward to this one, part of the route will bring back some LEL memories.

Right, entries now closed as I want to sort the admin out before the weekend.
See you all on Saturday.
-
I'm playing out, I think, if I can sort logistics in time, hectic week...
-
I've chickened out as a result of the weather forecast - getting soft in my old age. Good luck to everyone who is audacious enough for the ride.
-
I’ve just dug out the full winter gear!

I probably should have looked at the weather before sorting logistics. FML.
-
I reckon it'll be fine. Chilly, and maybe a bit drizzly at the start, but fine. The rain's coming in from the coast, and the whole ride's inland.
-
Good luck, everyone!

Likewise! Setting off to the train in 10 minutes!
-
DNS for me despite my upthread enthusiasm.
Mentally defeated by other things and listening to the combination of rain and wind has made me decide not to ride. Good luck to everyone.
-
59 58 on the road. Bit breezy, but fairing up.
-
... fairing up.
Mostly ;D

Snow settling on roads in Ferryhill. Coat drenched. Gloves drenched. Socks wet. Onto my backup dry gloves and backup dry winter jersey. Discretion, valour et al: took the A167 back to Darlo. Changed and in the car trying to warm up. DNF for me, but it was lots of fun while it lasted.
I guess I picked the wrong year to swap stamping cards in Masham for riding.
:-S
-
You could always head over and help stamp the cards...
-
It's sunny here. And there's a fire. And chips.
-
Sunny in Whorlton too but no one here yet...
-
You might have a nice bridge, but have you got a pub full of hounds?

Same here turned back at ferryhill. Bit too much settling on the road for my risk averse liking.
Good luck to anybody that does finish, I get the impression once you get down off the moor you might be ok.
-
I hope everyone still riding is hungry! Sun's out at Appleton Wiske

A lovely offer - but home now and cooking roast lamb, drinking warm beer. I finally stopped feeling cold in my chest and legs as I drove past Ferrybridge services. That was a brilliant adventure Deano - and genuine kudos to anyone pushing through to the brighter weather.
-
Lol emoji.
-
It genuinely is lovely and sunny here in Masham. Still quite brsk, but bright and dry!
-
This is all sounding a bit like a typical North West Passage 200 - except for the fairing up and sun bits!
-
I bailed at Bishop Auckland and got the train home. 20 years ago, I might have carried on like a loony, but I freeze quicker now and don't bounce as well as I used to! ::-)
Thought processes were along the lines of:
"Oh, it's sleeting!";
"Oooh, it's snowing!!";
"Ah, Fishburn control";
"Feck, I can't feel my feet!!";
"Double Feck, I can't feel my hands!";
"That's the Bishop Auckland sign";
"Ooh look, a train!";Catches train! (Sadly it was a Pacer, so my feet didn't warm up on that either, blooming gale force, freezing blasts of wind through the sodding bus doors!)
Now home and warm! :-D :-D
-
Right - 78 entries*, 59 starters on the day and 26* finishers.
The northeastern tip of the route seems to have been particularly grim, judging by the comments I received from riders who finished, and the frantic phone calls from those who sought shelter in the cafes, pubs and WMCs of Ferryhill and Kirk Merrington.
If you got through that lot (and it was a big if), it was a decent ride afters. Might have been a bit headwindy back to Darlo, mind, as the first rider was two hours slower than the first rider last year.
Ah well - you make plans as an organiser, and as riders, and sometimes the weather just comes and pisses all over your plans. I was pleased to have as many finishers as I did, and nobody was hurt, so I reckon everyone made the right choices.
Loads more photos to follow once I sort them out.

*Excluding my helper's ride last weekend, which was lovely.

Nearly made it to the start, car battery flat (nissan leaf) just before scotch corner. 10:00 before assistance arrived to carry me and car a half mile up road to charger. Damn frozen standing around in the sleet. Well done to all who attended.
-
Well, after being DNS for the last two years I finally made it to the start this time around and began the ride with enthusiasm. Sadly it didnt last as when the snow/sleet began and I got colder and colder I finally called it a day and headed back to the finish and to my hotel room at the Premier Inn for a nice hot shower and change of clothes.
I met several others later in the Beefeater (finish control) who had also packed and sat around to see the first finishers in a little under 10-hours.
Well done to Dean for putting the event on. The weather is always a lottery at any time of the year of course. Hoping its a bit better for the Gt.North Road 400 next May though.

Hmm. Still not OK with my decision to DNF to be honest. Rash, and soft.
Kudos to those who got round, there's more of you than I thought there would be.
-
Problem is you cannot tell what is round the corner. (Or over the hill) Even with 3 wheels I had my doubts, after a couple of miles it improved from 'bad' to 'good' . I even considered calling a few riders I knew but decided that everyone makes their own decision and I should not influence them.

I mean I know it was possible to stay upright but the risk of not doing so was greater due to the slush in my opinion. Wouldn't feel too bad about it
-
Well that was fun!
It was definitely a full winter gear ride, setting off in the light rain and cold, getting excited seeing some snow on a car, I thought that would be the only snow I would see!
It then got heavier and then saw a lot of riders turning around, at this point the hands were very cold.
Stopped at a bus shelter to check my weather radar app, no showers the furthest west you went. Carried on and few miles down the road the roads were fine.
Promised myself a fry up and some warmth in a cafe in Middleton, the excellent The Tees'pot did an excellent fry up.
The next leg down to Masham had the benefit of a strong tailwind, it was now a sunny, crisp winters day, even undid my zip on my jacket!
Welcomed by the controllers at the White Bear, half an Old Peculier. Then headed north, on some nice lanes onto Appleton Whiske, where tea and food was provided by the controllers, they put in a great shift!
Not far to the finish now, on arrival the chat and beer was flowing well. Glad I had booked the Travelodge so I could join in!
So big thanks to Deano for organising, and the controllers for enabling me to have a great day out, and not one garage forecourt to visit!

Those first two pictures don't even remotely look like the same day!

Here's one of aidan.f approaching the A1(M) bridge between Fishburn and Ferryhill. Thank you for stopping to check I was ok, I was just seeing which station was nearest! It turned out that Bishop Auckland was the easiest to navigate to in the end.

When I quit I knew I'd made the right decision. The A167 back to Darlo was especially tough and confirmed I'd made the right choice. Then I saw Marlan and Deano's photos. Oh well. Kudos to those who pushed through to the brighter weather. Well rewarded I'd say.
Still - the roast lamb and warm beer at home were good. Out tomorrow for a solo 200 DIY.
-
I'm not sure my decision to quit was right in hindsight. I bailed at Kirk Merrington along with 5 others we took shelter in Ferryhill WMC, I was very cold and wet but wonder if I'd sheltered there for longer I could have warmed up and gone on.
Poor choice of clothing and tyres didn't help - next year I'll be better prepared and if you're reading this Rob - I'll buy you that coffee back - thank you.
Great pics Marlon, shame we didn't get that beer!
