Title: Womens Footie....The Euros.
Post by: Von Broad on 06 July, 2022, 08:01:18 pm
Seems like I've been watching the womens game for ages now.....and it's been interesting to see how the standard has improved over the years [and I mean globally]...they play a really decent game, and the coverage gets bigger by the competition.

Looking forward to it.

Flukey penalty....but you've got to capitalize on good fortune and take your chances [see my great soccer insight there!]

Oh, I say! Jolly well done!

Saw most of the first half before being distracted by Other Things.  Also I learned that “Batlle” is apparently pronounced “Badger”.  I kept looking for one moving the goalposts.

I wonder if I'm still being blocked by an individual otp when I suggested (a couple of years ago
prior to the women's world cup) that an academy team of 14/15/16 year old boys would handsomely beat top women's national teams (despite providing links to such heavy defeats of USA, AUS and Sweden).

My point was that women's national teams would benefit from playing these lads in warm-up
games (and I still firmly believe that, despite being hounded by armchair coaches members otp). :-D

Very little has been said by the media of the fantastic save made by the England goalie when the
score was 2-0. If Sweden had scored it would have brought them right back into the game and
afforded us some possible squeaky bum moments.

There was a save in the first few minutes too. If only….

The game ebbed and flowed and we were under the cosh during the first part. However, we scored goals and Sweden didn’t.

There was a save in the first few minutes too. If only….

It was a game of two goalkeepers Brian.
One keeper kept a team in the game, whereas the other keeper didn't exactly have her best game.

England have rode their luck over the last couple of games, and rather like the match against Spain, it's rather a case of the opposition failing to score.
I think they play some really good stuff.

I'm still wondering if the Spanish manager has taken off his false hair, glasses, beard and other aspects of disguise after re-entering the country.
He had a shocker with the selection.

Another one Sunday.
Might even get a beer in!

My predicition - Wiegman will keep the same starting eleven and Helen White will score at Wembley.

Correct! And funny you should ask that because JP [along with his assistant - sorry forgotten her name. ex-England international**] was always the 'main' commentator for the big England games....but obviously not anymore. In a nut shell, he's been demoted. Which, for me, is a bit of a shame, I think he's excellent.

Anyway.....nothing is forever!!!

I watched both semi finals start to finish and found them most enjoyable.

The quality and style of play strikes me as being in something of a sweet spot [for my viewing anyway].

Skill levels have improved significantly enough to be admired but the game hasn't (yet?) adopted the irritating habits of the men.  I find it a nice combination.

I'll not be able to watch the final but of the four teams in the semi finals it looks very much like the best two teams are in the final.

Good luck!

Lots of stuff in the news - almost no mention of the Absolutely Amazing, tough as coffin nails, Mary Earps.

She was kicked, hacked, took a boot to the body; and kept on going. No loss of concentration, made so many saves.

Without her super skills and toughness, I think the score would have been 5-2 for Germany.

Nope. It was a nod to this:

Totally agree - she hardly put a foot wrong, at the other end the German keeper had a few hairy moments.
There were one or two performances out there that changed my perception of womens football, Leah Williamson really looks the part, best defender in the tournament by a mile if you ask me. The last 5 minute game management in extra-time was text book stuff, never seen an England mens team do anything like that, ever...  and dont forget the opponent was probably marginally better too.

I thought yesterday ticked a lot of boxes, respect for the opponent and their national anthem for a start and the general atmosphere in the stadium, also at end when the Germans supports also stayed on. Great advertisement for the sport and I cannot imagine that sponsors will not be queuing up to get involved.

I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of outright jingoism in the headlines, and certainly didn’t see any chauvinism either. I’ve not read any of the reports though because I’m just not interested in soccerball whomever is kicking the bladder.

Absolutely. She's had a really good tournament throughout too. Helped as well by having a decent defence in front of you.

Outstanding too, and my favourite player, is Keira Walsh. Not sure if Glen Hoddle is somebody she admires, but her passing and distribution is top notch. Really good player. The ball she put through for Toone's goal was spot on. Damn good goal too.
