Title: Footy replays
Post by: toontra on 28 February, 2024, 09:01:07 pm
Over the last couple of seasons the replays are eating into live play more and more.  It's as if the online editors are insisting on showing off their toys rather than someone in charge saying "Oi - there's play going on".

It was always going to happen and tonight it did - Leeds scored while we were watching the third replay of a missed chance.

Personally I'd rather be watching the game than replays from several angles of something we've already seen live.  OK if the ball is dead but as soon as the game restarts then it should cut to the action.

Aaarrrrggghhh.

Wasn't there a case recently of a pro cyclist about to win possibly the only victory of his career in a Grand Tour and the producer switched to a General Classification battle further down the course and missed the winner's epic triumph?  I agree it has all become too driven by the available technology in football.

They need to develop some sort of technology where they could split the screen to show two things at once...

Same happened with the rugby. Loads of slow motion replays not actually showing much. And certainly not matching with what the  Colemantators were saying.

Yes - it actually started a few years ago with the rugby 6 nations but is now widespread throughout club rugby and football.

My guess is that the replays are somehow automated - someone presses a button and various feeds are queued up and played in sequence.  I noticed as many as 5 different camera angles of the same action yesterday.  That would be impossible to do manually by an editor so there must be automation involved.

BUT - there should be someone who takes charge and cuts back to live action when it's happening.  We shouldn't be a slave to the technology just because it's there.

It's just happened again in the FA cup!  Showing a replay and suddenly cuts back to the ball in the back of the Chelsea net and no idea how it got there.  This is getting ridiculous.

But at least it was only a Chelsea game and not important.

Just happened again!  Watching six (6) replays of a Newcastle goal, including crowd reaction, while they scored a second.  Unf****ing believable.
