Brrrrr!! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7862378.stm)
-
Yippee, the Met Office are now giving us (Lancashire) a 60% chance of between 5 and 20cm of snow.
-
My dad said he'd pop in tomorrow on his way to Aviemore - I don't know if he's planning on spending the night. I really hope, in the nicest possible way, he doesn't get stuck here.
-
It's just started snowing quite heavily.
-
It was snowing intermittently about an hour ago in Pimlico (a few flakes drifting gracefully about the place). There is now clear blue sky and bright sunshine.
-
I've got my winter drawers on.
-
Its starting to dust down here in the Pennines too....
Biting 20mph easterly wind on the tops too - I am staying put today!
-
It's started to snow a little. I'm tempted to go for a quick spin. Anyone up for a ride in London?
-
No snow here yet. I think "yet" is the operative word!
Lots of white stuff forecast for later
-
Had a few flakes around in Hither Green a little while ago, but now bright blue skies!
The BBC weather page has changed Monday's prediction from 'light snow' to 'heavy snow'.
-
Snowing like mad on the Yorkshire Wolds now. Big fat flakes and it's laying.
-
Just started to snow in Gloucestershire, but only very slightly.
-
Cloudy, but still dry in Zummerzet :-\
N
-
Gentle flurries in Rugby for the last hour.
-
A few flakes earlier in Ealing. Have we got time to prune the roses?
-
Ah HA! A blizzard has just turned up, here in Norfolk. The world is now this: White.
-
Bright sunshine near Oxford...must be surrounded by snowy bits by now.
(I'm looking forward to getting the MTB out for tomorrow's trip to work!)
-
Third flurry so far today in Derby. This one's starting to settle.
Just as well I fettled the Windcheetah yesterday, ready for tomorrow's commute. (Only 3.5 miles each way, but I'd rather have 3 wheels between me and snow.)
Central Heating On, steaming mug of soup inside me, Lord Of The Rings DVD playing, (Tolkein is Hobbit-forming!). Now I have the insides of my eyelids to study.
G'night all.
-
Leatherhead - one minute bright blue sky, next minute very dark, next minute bright blue sky, next minute very dark with very light snow flurry, ad endum.... will it make up its mind?
-
It's snowing - in Southsea :o
No, hang on, it's stopped :(.
-
A heavy dusting just now in SW6... But it's now stopped! It's heavier at the front of the flat than the back.
-
yup 3 snow showers in the last 2 hours and they have just gone worse and worse. This looks like the first proper winter for me over here.
-
Winter seems to be over in Abu Dhabi. Definitely more heat in the sun the last few days.
Might not need the arm warmers tomorrow.
Which is nice. 8)
-
3-4 inches of snow here, they've stopped all the buses and the roads are empty with what few cars that are left going walking pace. Was impossible to cycle back in due to the ice that kept forming in the SPDs, the roads were slippery but riding over virgin snow was perfectly fine with 23mm Pro Race2 tyres at 120psi.
-
FFS, I'm watching BBC World News - the allegedly international channel.
They've just spent the first 8 minutes of the bulletin talking about the snow in the UK. Really world news isn't it.
-
:) Yay ! At last, Edinburgh has some snow this winter ! (Not much mind)
-
It's white and fluffy and soft and cold and waiting for me. :)
I still don't know which bike though, can't be the Sunday as it has a mudguard. Fixie or MTB. Hmmmm.
-
There is Proper Snow here, several inches deep.
I'm tempted to work from home today - the buses aren't running due to it being "too dangerous" which means I can only get in if I ride, and I'm not sure that's a great idea. The thought of coming home in the dark tonight isn't appealing. Or maybe I'm just being a big wuss. :-\
-
working from home FTW ;D
lots more sno forecast for this afternoon, if you get to work you might never get out - imagine being stuck there...
-
Proper fluffy snow in Brighton. I would be working from home, but apparently I'm required to help build a snow gruffalo in the garden
-
lots more sno forecast for this afternoon, if you get to work you might never get out - imagine being stuck there...
Ooh, I hadn't thought of that. :(
Heck. It's only 5 miles. I can walk home if I have to. I can't pass up this opportunity for some commuty fun. ;D
-
That is what I reckon. Fun fun fun.
-
15-20cm here in Biggin Hill!!!
-
This what it looks like outside our back door:

Mr R has left to try and get to Cambridge.... he may be some time.
-
We've had about an inch here, and the temperature is -1ish. Maidstone daughter & son-in-law's schools are closed. T'other daughter has to get to Holborn. Lpoo St & Central Lines are open.
It's amazing how the national rail website has ground to a halt because of the adverse weather conditions. There must be some virtual snow as well.
I don't suppose I'll have cause to get a bike out today. I'm hoping my school will be closed. It's a right pain to get out there in rotten conditions just for an hour and a half. It's also an after-school session so I'm sure, even if they open, they'll want the kids out a.s.a.p.
Edit: Reg, you've had roughly 5 times as much snow as we have, judging by those pictures.
-

We've had a good 6". And guess what... they've known it was going to snow and they haven't bothered to grit the roads!!! ::-)
-
Well we might not have had as much snow in the North West but we are not going to miss out. A lorry has shed it's load of fridges on the M6 motorway. ;D ;D ;D
-
Just ridden in to work, dug the mtb out of the shed; no problems.
Almost all the rest of the staff are off, trains being cancelled and motorway junctions closed.
Joy.
Wimps.
-
Well I am going to go out on foot or maybe on the MTB, will drop the pressure right down in the tyres and see what happens.
-
There's more than a foot of snow on our garden table. Wondering a) how to get to work this morning for some severe deadlines (why oh why didn't I bring my work laptop home... this is possibly the first ever time in my life I have had this thought) and b) how to get to New York this evening.
Lots of travel websites down so I can't get a clear picture of what's going on.
Hahahahahahahaha.
PS. There is no way I am cycling in with or without a suitcase. You're all nuts.
-

Don't break anything!

The Gatwick Express has been cancelled. So has the Heathrow Express. The Piccadilly line isn'r running properly either.
HTH!
-
Looking better and better for zero travel today!! Thanks Reg!
-

Mr A said I shouldn't go on the bike as I will fall off and hurt myself. Talk about being positive!
-
LMM - the Piccadilly line's okay to Heathrow - it's just suspended between Acton and Rayners Lane.
The buses aren't running so I can't get to work via public transport. Cycling is the only option - but there is a foot of snow outside and more predicted for the afternoon. But if I work from home today, I absolutely have to get in tomorrow, and it may be worse then. Hmmm.
-

You might fall off, but snow's a very soft landing so you won't hurt yourself! ;D

So, one Pixie, one MTB, one black dog at the ready. Better get some clothes on first though.
-
Take the camera!
-
Younger daughter, off to her first day at Cancer Research UK, has had a voicemail to say that the induction has been cancelled. She'd just got on a train so will get off it again v. soon.
-
There's about 5 inches here. I'm all excited! The cat was very confused this morning.
Hopefully the trains will be completely knackered so I can be really late for work
-
It's as deep in Mid-Hampshire as I can remember it (but that's still not very deep).
I need to go and get a photo of a certain fishing hut at some point as I'm trying to get photos of it in as many conditions as possible. I think the bike may be out of the question.
Here it is (not today obviously), hopefully I should be able to get a stunning one today, would be a shame not to take the opportunity.

-
It's been 38 degrees today and was about the same over the weekend  . Some snow would be a very attractive diversion right now
-
The road is so slippery that I don't think I'll bother today.
-
Boss called to say don't bother coming to work. Woot!!! Snow day!!!!!
Me and the Yuba are going off-roading!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm watching the emails come into work saying that people won't be into the Lab, mine included! We've got a good foot or more of snow in Croydon. I don't think the cats impressed, but he's gone back to bed. The foxes track (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=128.msg264047#msg264047) from last night has disappeared under the snow, as has most of the garden.
I can't see any sensible way to get into work, since the Trams, Underground, and Buses all seem to be totally, or largely buggered. The trains are probably also buggered, but as others have said, the websites relevant appear to be suffering. I could take the mudguards of Sid the Singlespeed, and let the tyres down, but frankly I can't be arsed, just so that I can attempt a 12 mile cycle, with car drivers who probably shouldn't be out in these conditions.
So, three (four?) day weekend then!

I reckon that is getting on for a foot.
There are no trains running and the roads haven't been gritted at all.
-
Mr R has banned me from going out onna bike... :(
The drivers that are out on the roads are acting like dicks and he's decided that I can't risk doing my shoulder again (or worse).
So it looks as though I'll have to haul on my boots and go for a trek instead.
-
We've got about 2 mm in the yard and nothing much at all on the fields :(

Thankfully, my commute up the stairs and along the landing went as well as can be expected .
-
Loadsa fun doing 14.5 miles on/off road on the knobblies this morning. 1/2" of snow in Dorset is a special occasion not to be missed.
-

Did you have to put snow tires on the MTB? ;)
-
About 9" here in SW London. No trains, no tube (the one near me is overground), no buses.
Unfortunately I brought my laptop home so I can work from home.

I've just seen E off on the Piccadilly line. Service with delays they said. District completely stopped. Lots of people wandering about aimlessly. Daughter texted to say hardly any snow in E Devon, where I'm going in a while.
-
Been out with the dogs, took a few pics with the little camera. Far too cold to be dragging the dSLR and tripod along. Not many folks out though. The black dog cut her foot and left a trail of red blobs all the way round. The Goldies had huge clumps of ice between their toes, only the man complained, the woman just got on with it.
Tis snowing again. I will go out on the MTB later if I can warm my toes and fingers enough.
On a good note, I got to wear my new ski pants.
-
Roads were pretty deserted where I am, so I went out for a ride. Did a couple of laps of Finsbury Park to see what it was like. It was this: Fun

Decided to wear my comedy winter hat too
(http://www.pbase.com/gchong2426/image/108785979.jpg)
Forgot there were speed bumps on my road. Amazing what snow does to your memory...
Just realised I have a pair of wellies. I'm going out again!!!!
-
Well, that wasn't what I was expecting. Once on the major roads they were all pretty clear. We've not had anything like you guys are getting.
However it is now coming down heavily. Home time might be different.
-
Anyone on here fancy flirting with hypothermia? I would if I knew who she was.
The AA has warned motorists to ensure they keep warm clothes in their vehicles if they were planning to go out, or else risk "flirting with hypothermia".
-
I shortened my commute this morning.Omitted the kitchen & went directly from the bedroom to the office. No snow en route. 8)

Is that some sort of diet?
-
Hmmm....
All
Circle lines
Hammersmith & City lines
Buses
In and out flights from Heathrow/Luton/London all suspended.
They've been saying it's gonna snow for a week yet no grit?

Yep.
It's to get into shape for JoGle.
Round is a shape ;D
-
Got bored standing at the station. It would seem whatever-they-call-themselves-this-week trains refused to accept that their services were b0rked. I iz getting day off ;D
I could:
a. Get on with some work
b. Drink some beer
I'm leaning towards b at the moment :P
-
Got up at 5.45 to go and play in the snow in Richmond Park - apart from an early (and surly) dog walker we hardly saw anyone until about 7.30 - we got a good crack at sledging before anyone else, walked through some knee deep drifts and followed various animal tracks (squirrels were the funniest - shall I go up this tree? Or this one? Or shall I jump around for a bit? anything here?).
It was great walking through great expanses (for London anyway) of deep, pristine snow. I've got a pair of German army-surplus fleece lined leather boots and they were fantastic for today's conditions.
I'm going to wait for the advertised heavy snowfall this afternoon then get out on my old Marin hardtail.
-
They've been saying it's gonna snow for a week yet no grit?
I'm not sure grit would be able to deal with this. It's snowplough weather, and I guess there aren't that many of them about...
-
I've just wobbled, skidded and stumbled in from Forest Hill to Holborn. Very few roads had any visible tarmac to speak of. A journey that usually takes 40 minutes took 1h40. Now I've scored my loony points for cycling in, I might start thinking about heading home agin.
-

Kingston Hill was gritted several times yesterday, the side roads a few times and all are fairly snowy - or at least were first thing.
-
Fair point :) I've got my looney points for cycling back home at 1.30am when it was a mental blizzard. Glad I did though, if I'm not gonna cycle for a while, might aswell have made an event of it which I did.
-
Someone was prepared for this weather...
I just rang a client in Epsom & got a pre-recorded answer
Due to adverse weather conditions & a lack of public transport this is office is currently closed. Please ring again later.
So that's a dollop o' custom that will be missing from the Kings Arms in East St. at lunchtime. No lunch "meeting" today
-
The last time we had a heavy snowfall in London, I should have got Loony points for cycling in it, but didn't. It started snowing in the evening, and I had to cycle home in it, but by the time I left there was no one left to comment upon it. ;) :-\
That was fun though, nearly empty dark roads, with a fresh thin layer of snow, on a Brompton. It wasn't quite heavy or sticky enough to bung up the mudguards on that occasion. I don't think today is Brompton weather, around here I'd hardly be able to see the wheels!
(I say dark, but with snow you never really seem to get dark, since any light that is about gets scattered everywhere, and it's spookily well lit).
-
If I took the trike out, would I have enough traction? Could be fun on the roads
-
I used to cycle my Trice in snow, great fun, although I never managed to get it to do a proper skid!
-
I'm not cycling in this, mostly because I don't trust the drivers that are about. And because everywhere else was closed, the world and his dog were trying to get on the Victoria line at Stockwell, so I gave it a miss.
Cam liked the snow a lot though ;D

I think it's time to take Fred out for a spin and rescue people in their cars lol. Before I do so, what are the chances of us being stuck? 12tonnes on 6 BIG tractor wheels with 6WD and 4WS?

Starting to come down now though- there may be scope for mountain bike snowy woodland funtime yet....

Police using riot shields to sled! Last night on Primrose Hill!

Well, I went for a wander (no buses running) into town. Very few cars on the road, a few black cabs (driving like twunts as per normal) and quite a few cyclists  I found that a pair of unpadded thermal bib-longs under my trousers meant my legs were nice and warm.
Many of the shops are shut as staff haven't been able to get in. Still no sign of any gritting going on - if they don't grit soon there'll be carnage tomorrow, as what is already here freezes overnight and is overlaid with fresh snow.

a) your photos showed lots of gritted roads.
b) even if they do grit, it'll freeze over tonight unless there is constant traffic to mix the grit and snow around. Gritting does not magic the snow away.

None of the roads have been gritted. A few of the more major roads are passable (just about) but they are covered in a thick layer of slush that will freeze solid tonight.
-
Where did the slush come from?
In your photos it is on the roads, not the pavements etc. That's the effect of car tyres grinding in the grit.
On an ungritted road the snow gets packed down to hard white ice (I'm probably going to have to walk the last uphill to my house tonight as it will be in that state). On a gritted road it turns to slush such as in your photos.
The only way to get rid of that slush is to increase traffic volumes going over it to finish melting it.
-
On an ungritted road, given enough traffic, the hard packed down snow eventually melts turning to slush. Tyres run quite warm, as do exhaust gases and the undertrays of cars. But, if you don't have enough traffic, then it'll refreeze and stay solid.
Gritting does not magic the snow away.
And it's not really "grit", it's mainly salt, most commonly calcium chloride as it reacts with water to generate heat melting more of the snow/ice. It also helps lower the melting point of ice. Normal salt (Sodium Chloride) does lower the freezing/melting point but it doesn't release any heat on contact with water.
P.S. Snowing more heavily again in SW15. About 9" of snow so far and it looks like it will be over 12" deep by the evening commute. :)
-
Only a couple of short flurries here, and nowt lying. Boring!
-
I feel quite jealous. We've had little more than a dusting and everything seems to be working normally.*
* Except for the dog's bowels, which are making some very strange noises.
Perhaps the two are connected? Perhaps doggie has eaten all the snow roundabout and the strange noises are the prequel to the canine version of two dogs one cup?
I had fun cycling in on the trike this morning - two wheel drive gives plenty of grip even uphill, one wheel braking is a little scary downhill. Powerslides round icy corners.

Er, Bob, NSFW!
-
The main roads out of town were gritted. The M3 was open - two and a half lanes. Down here it's green fields and sunshine, but bloody cold.
-
We've been sent home for the day (or more accurately, told we may go home). I got many loony points for cycling  Most of my colleagues that made it in walked. Tis snowy in SW London. I will probably get the walking boots and gaitors out and walk tomorrow if it freezes overnight, as there is an awful lot of slush and ice still around at the moment.
Emma
-
Tell you what. If this carries on, and it's getting heavier and deeper here finally, I'll be cracking out the Marin and running the tyres at 30 tomorrow.
-
I'm just off to do that now - little ride to the park and see how far I get round the Tamsin trail.
-
Turning to rain in Norfolk now. I predict a sleety 'orrible slush-fest over the next few hours .
-
There is a group of teenagers reclaiming our road by building a speed ramp out of snow. I do hope that it doesn't end in tears.

Snowing heavily now. Cam and I went for a walk in the park; the residents of Stockwell are nothing if not imaginative ;D

I bottled it tonight. There's no way for me to get home without climbing one of several minor road hills into my area. The snow has been falling heavily for the past few hours abd seems set to continue. The bike is safe in the office, I came home on the train.
Correct decison. As I came out of the station, I watched several cars making a mess of the hill - sliding sideways into the curb as they wheel span their way up.
It wasn't the snow that scared me off - It was the expected naff snow driving skills of the motons.

That's what put me off. I'm quite tempted to go out later tonight, when the roads are empty and we've had some fresh snow...

It stopped snowing half an hour ago and is now raining :(

:) About an inch with us now, off road it's still nice and crunchy and most satisfying to ride on. I'm hoping it doesn't freeze though !

Oh no!
Still snowing here...
-
Still snowing here in Wiltshire. The boys and I went out on our MTBs along the canal and up the hill with a sled. We then enjoyed a couple of hours sledding and have now just got home. As it got dark it got very cold again. Out of the wind it wasn't half bad.

I've had one of the best days ever!
Call from work telling me not to go in. Went out for a pootle on my Yuba, enjoyed it so much that I decided to N+1 and get the MTB that I'd been eyeing up for a while. Head out to Decathlon, get the bike. Then spend the rest of the day riding around London in the snow like a child with the biggest grin ever on my face.
My N+1 Rockrider 9.1

Was riding around with my wellies on and a woolly hat, just finding snowy slopes in the park to ride the bike up and ride and down.

Having to exercise a one in one out system now, anyone want to buy a pre-loved Brompton L6? ;D

On an ungritted road, given enough traffic, the hard packed down snow eventually melts turning to slush. Tyres run quite warm, as do exhaust gases and the undertrays of cars. But, if you don't have enough traffic, then it'll refreeze and stay solid.
...
I didn't reply earlier as I wanted to check my facts.
As predicted, the whole way home (on roads that would be gritted as they're main ones) was riding on roads that looked like regulator's photos. Black shitty slush.
As soon as I finished and turned to go home on the final back roads it was slippery white stuff.
My road itself is pristine white ice. Where wheel spinning cars have dug through I can see it's about an inch thick. This is a very busy rat run, a lot of the traffic would have been on 70 and 50mph dual carriageways immediately before entering the road. Tyres, exhaust, etc would be pretty hot.
I'd put money on those London roads that the photos are of are gritted.
-
I'd put money on those London roads that the photos are of are gritted.
Having walked them, nutty, I can assure you they're not gritted.
-

I think a lot of roads in London have residual salt from previous gritting sorties that could be playing a part.
-
JC wants me to go back to the field to take a pic of the dinosaur he was making with his dad. He is worried that by tomorrow it will have melted. I am in my best jim jams, I am exhausted and I really don't want to go, it will be so very dark. I do however have my new Exposure light so could in theory nip up to the field but.....
-

Ummm...
As Little Miss Mac suggested in a thread elsewhere....
once the snow has reached a certain depth, it's a job for a plough rather than salt or grit....
-
It's feels cold where we are in The Netherlands, but that's due to the wind rather than the actually air temperature & in fact it was colder in January. However, then the cold was coupled with blue skies, sun & no wind & so it seemed warmer. Oh, & there's no snow here :-[.
-
None of the roads are griited near me yet they are black mush on the roads
-
There's a lot of dripping going on outside.
2°C and rising...

Indeed.
Snow ploughs are the only way on deep snow.
but snow + grit + traffic = black slush
snow + grit + lots of traffic = wetness and slush slowly vanishing
snow + traffic = white ice.
-
Snow + crap on road + traffic = dirty blackish slush
-
snow + traffic = white ice.
Your anecdotal evidence doesn't fit with my anecdotal evidence. There are plenty of ungritted roads around here where the busy sections have melted to black slush, some even almost clear, and some sections have refrozen again to white ice.
It'd be quite possible that your rat run road was just too thick a layer for the traffic to melt it. I'm sure there's a tipping point below which the traffic will make the conditions better, causing free-flowing traffic to move faster and the road to become even clearer. Past the tipping point it just remains a frozen white lump.
The road opposite me hasn't been gritted and has clear tyre tracks on each side of the road, but that's starting to freeze over again. The entrance to the cul-de-sac opposite is relatively clear but the further up the cul-de-sac you go the more frozen over it is as fewer cars have been up/down it.
"Grit" is salt which temporarily melts a certain amount of snow. Once it's melted you rely on free flowing traffic to clear off the slush/water and melt any further snow fall. If you then keep it gritted you keep the salinity of the standing water high enough that it lowers the freezing point of the water below the ambient temperature. If you don't grit it then it freezes and the icy roads stop people driving on them.
-
It's all about the melting point of ice isn't it?
Salt works by lowering the melting point such that the ice will melt, even when its temperature is <0c. The amount of grit they apply (supposedly) determines the temperatures at which the application will be effective.
Cars driving over snow melt the snow by a different mechanism. The weight of the car applies pressure to the ice - increased pressure lowers the melting point and it melts. Do it enough times and the snow turns to slush. A continuous stream of cars with hot engines and exhausts adds to the effect.
There's a skool science experiment I remember - where you hang a couple of weights either end of a cheesewire across a block of ice. The weights apply pressure to the ice through the wire, and it gradually (without intervention) cuts through the ice.
-

And the ice re-freezes above the wire as it passes through, 'cos its no longer under pressure...
-
Calcium Chloride (commonly used as road grit) also releases heat when it reacts with water. Normal salt (Sodium Chloride) doesn't do this.
The third way it can help is that the salt (or any sand if they use it) increases the friction and therefore any cars moving along the road will generate more heat than normal.
-
The gritter lorry has just driven down the road.
-
Red Routes seem to be gritted a lot more intensively than local authority roads.
-
Well, it didn't snow much yesterday but my word it did overnight. And it's just started again in earnest. Seriously heavy stuff. I hope Mrs MV gets back from work OK.
-
I'm on the lookout for some Schwalbe Marathon Winter (studded) tyres in 700c x 35mm.
Give that I use the hackbike so infrequently I may as well [sic] winterise it...
-
It rained last night, the temperature is now 5°C and I'm hoping we've seen the last of the white stuff until 2010.
-
Well, we've just had the most snow for 22 years ;D
-
Started snowing about 8am here and has thrown it down constantly since. Town doesn't seem too bad but here in the suburban ind. estates of Bridge of Doom the roads are rammed. One of ours guys made it in no problem from the country areas only to get stuck in traffic for an 1.5hrs about a mile away from work.
-
It snowed last night, so of course the power went off - for four hours. The phone line from the pole outside is hanging heavy with ice.
-
It is snowing very heavily here in Suffolk. Proper big chunky flakes. JC has gone to school, just hope he can get home again.
I won't be going anywhere.
-
Raining here in Norfolk, just as it has all week.
And now I have a free weekend (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14867.0) to kill...
-
I'm planning to get to London later.
-
Sleet in NW Londonton.
The traffic was very heavy - almost certainly due to accidents and general idiocy. The interesting thing is that although it's not that cold, the slush on the roads isn't going away. I'm suspecting this is because there's no salt left and the salt that was put down got washed away in the week.
If it does start to freeze up again, it's going to get... interesting :-\
-
No rain in Saarfend, nor wind. Just dull. Min Temp 0°C, max 7°C.
-
It is the most disgusting sleet here in Andover, just enough snow that we are getting a deep build-up of slush, luvverly.
I picked a perfect week to get a cold becasue I wouldn't be going out anyway
-
Well today I gave it best, and turned around after 2 miles of sliding all over the shop on wet snow that turned to icy slush as soon as it was driven on. Took me an hour for the round trip. Thank goodness for VPN so I can get some work done!
-
I went for a ride; the power went off just before I set off, and was still off when I got back. So I packed my bags and headed for London. In a couple of places it was only the continuous efforts of snow-ploughs that kept the A303 open. Much of it was one lane only, with slush down the middle. A few trees down. A couple of large bushes of ivy across the road had been torn from their hosts by the weight of snow on their leaves. An interesting journey.
-
This was definitely the worst ride in of the week. Having really enjoyed my rides in up till today, I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need the Roughstuff any more as the roads seemed clear of ice and snow on the way home last night. Put it away and just hopped on the singlespeed, forgetting the important fact that I removed the mudguards when I removed the gears etc. Got hit by heavy, wet, sleety stuff a few minutes into my commute, adding to the remnants of the weeks ice and snow- got to work with a wet, dirty and very cold backside and feet (having left the sealskinz in the wash). Hmmph! Luckily I had packed clean underwear as well as normal work clothes (but you probably don't need to know that!)
-
Yep, the most difficult so far. The wind this morning made it trickier and the icy conditions didn't assist. I didn't fall off on the way in, but did on the way home. I had to take 2 diversions due to snow / ice drifts too.
-
I notice that there are severe weather warnings for snow issued for today in lots of places.
We've got nasty, cold, inconvenient rain, but nothing I'd call severe.
Has anyone else had another layer of snow?
-
No - they were forecasting a load for here, starting this afternoon, but so far it's just raining
I left the car at Bristol Airport on Thursday - getting it out yesterday was entertaining. There was still a lot of snow on the ground over there.
-
Persistent rain here, building up from quite light earlier.
But the temperature has dropped quite rapidly.
-
When I got up this morning I found a couple of inches of snow had fallen overnight, but when I went out, the temperature felt quite mild. I've just come back into the office, the snow is melting but the temperature feels a lot colder. ???
-
Same here and its gone from a lovely clear day to foggy.
-
I think that today is the nastiest that this rotten winter has so far thrown at us. Horrid, cold persistent rain with no prospect of a let-up before first light tomorrow.
Incredibly, the Met Office have published this as the weather record for today:-
(http://peter.chesspod.com/gallery/d/4804-2/shoeburyweather.jpg)
I live about 5 miles from that weather station and we have had nothing but unrelenting heavy rain and totally overcast conditions all day. If it were sunny in Shoeburyness, I'm sure I'd be able to see some blue sky from my house, which I can't.

Not looking forward to Friday, only 31C that is going to be brrrr :) Looking on the telly of the fires in Victoria, you lot must think that 44C cold because many have trousers and some even jumpers on !!!
-
Mrs Nerd was sick on Thursday and Friday, so we didn't need the car. However, she perked over the weekend so I had to dig the car out yesterday evening. The rather heavy snow on Thurs and Friday had turned into about 3 inches of compacted ice with another couple of inches of snow on top. Took about an hour to clear the hardstanding at the back of the flat. And my back and arse muscles hurt today. :-[
The rest of Oxford is the same: many of the pavements around the university area are lethal compacted ice. I might have to email building services and ask why they haven't been gritted. :demon:

I'm back in the Southwest, the power's back on, and the place is filling up with water - snow melt and rain combining to overcome river banks and roadside ditches.

We have far too much water here in Suffolk. Due to heavy rain yesterday and all through the night, the river has burst its banks and is nowat least 80 feet wider than it was previously. Walking the dogs will be interesting. I will take some pics later on. It is still raining. :-\
-
I 'eard reference made to the Chelmer on the Toady Prog this a.m. It's liable to burst its banks at Chelmsford, apparently. Humphrys then made reference to the Chelmer "and other major rivers". ;D
On her 50th birthday, Mrs. Wow and I went for a nice walk in the Thaxted area during which we jumped over the Chelmer.
-
Well the Environment Agency have been of little help to us. They said we are on a warning but don't really know what's happening. It should be an alert, the river continues to rise, most of the roads around me are flooded and therefore closed. My friend lives just round the corner and was woken by two hefty coppers at 5.30am to tell her that her garden was flooded. She is surrounded on all sides by the river.
The road leading to our house is now starting to flood, this is not good news, if it comes in the front there is nowhere for it to go as the river is out the back and that is far too full already.
-
This pic is taken from my office window, looking at the back of my property and across the field. Next to the little trees and bushes is normally the river footpath. My friend lives off to the left, although you are unable to see her property in this picture.

Drove home via the scenic route yesterday. With the rain and the melting SNO a fair bit of it was under water, but there were a couple of intrepid souls braving it by bike.
This just in from the Facilities Bods:
Although there are no flood warnings on the Harlow section of the River Stort at the moment, we are aware that the Thames barrier will be closing at 10.30 this morning, which may ultimately cause further local flooding. We will put out further announcements as necessary, but please be aware that you may be asked to move your cars at short notice.
The Thames Barrier? The car park is forty metres above sea level :o >:( ???

Our flood plains are all floody, 'tis excellent.

Jaysus, Annie! That's looking a bit hairy :o

I'm sitting a short way upstream of the Thames barrier, and I've seen the local flood risk plan.
The church round the corner apparently featured in the recent drama on flooding.

I don't think anyone's been brave enough to cycle in for the past fortnight...

I took it into my head to run in to work this morning. The babbling brook that feeds into the Cam was well up, and the footbridge over it was 8 inches or so under. I had never realised that the coppice on the other side is a couple of feet lower. It was interesting to see each tree with its own bow wave and wake. I squelched the rest of the way in.
I can report that Grantchester Meadows were starting to flood. If there's a cold snap soon, there may be good skating opportunities.
Here's hoping the waters recede before you get wet Annie.
-
On the way in this morning, I noticed there was a small new lake on Tooting Bec Common where (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=529214&y=172353&z=106&sv=529214,172353&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=858&ax=529214&ay=172353&lm=0) there isn't one normally. Given the few rather forlorn little heaps of presumably almost totally melted snowmen, I guess this is mostly from the melting snow.
I rather hope the Mayors worries about 40m of flooding does not come true, since my house is less than 40m above sea level, although ten miles or so from the Thames... :-\
Still, it's bobbins compared to Annie's problems. I hope the nice new bike is upstairs!

Sadly a long way from being finished. In fact not even started as yet. I have a little bit of wood.
I have a plan though. I could strap something to the top of the three dogs. I have loads of that white stuff they put inside walls, can't remember the name. It floats.

Hope you're alright over there Annie. It's getting a bit biblical now after 48 hours of rain.

I managed to get home in Mr A's vehicle, it was a bit touch and go though. The only way I can get anywhere is in his 4 x 4. I am unable to now walk the dogs or walk anywhere, only the big vehicle will get us out to civilization.
I do however have the MTB and that will get me through the water but I will then be soaked and freezing. If need be I will use that to get supplies.
-
The speed that the rivers have "come up" is the suprise. Going to work this morning the Great Ouse at St Ives was normal, tonight the lock gates have been "reversed" and the river is a torrent.
Pity the poor people who parked their cars in the Dolphin Hotel car park that is currently somewhat submerged.

Ouchie - how far below your wall is it?
At least looking across the fields it looks like there is an awful lot of flat land for it to fill up if it wants to get higher though - at least, if it is not sloping upwards too much in that direction.

About an inch from the bottom of the wall, well it was when I checked a couple of hours ago. The wall is not in a good state, very old and contains drainage holes.
The problem is likely to be the water that is coming down the road at the front of the property. It is hitting the footbridge up river and therefore being forced over the wall and onto the road towards the house.
I have a sense of humour.

Well, a fair chunk of the car park is closed this morning, as it got flooded and then froze over. I suspect, however, that this had little or nothing to do with the Thames Barrier and a lot to do with the river Stort being too full of water.

It's just started snowing in South Ken, but doesn't seem to be settling, which is just as well since I forgot my overshoes this morning (I only noticed that my feet were cold about halfway in!)

Wossgoinon?
It's snowing like the clappers, settling loads and I didn't think any of this was forecast. I've just had a very exciting and slightly slippery ride back from tai chi.

I saw a forecast for a little light sleet... 2 - 3" of crisp snow in Ely since 4pm, still just about coming down, but the sky has that orangey 'full of snow' look to it. Reckon schools will be shut tomorrow.

Who said it could snow in Suffolk? I have plans for tomorrow. I am not amused.

It started snowing mid-morning here in NE England. I think it caught everyone on the hop, but it laid and kept snowing and didn't let up until about 5 pm, in time for it all to turn to 'orrible slush while I was riding home. I was lucky the local youths were crap at aiming snowballs.

Amazing amounts of snow here on the Wolds. We got 6 inches in 6 hours and it was the big fluffy stuff and all laid. Haven't had that much snow in such a short time for years. The snow ploughs couldn't keep up with it. They just got the kids home from school before the country roads were impassable for buses. Hasn't snowed at all in the night though and it looks like it's all going to melt today. That was a proper old fashioned snow fall not the usually 1 inch one day then another 1 inch the next like we have been having recently. If it had kept going all night we would have been snowed in good and proper today but teh snow plough came through at about 10:00pm last night and the roads are fine if a bit slippery now.
