BBC NEWS | England | Kent | Giant horse to become £2m artwork (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/7880889.stm)
It might be big, but I thought it was a bit, well, boring. It's not very 'arty'.....
-
I thought several things:
1. It won't be long until someone hangs an enormous knob on it.
2. The photo to have in one's album will be of one sitting on it.
3. It'll grow lichen and go green.
4. It'll blow over in a gale.
-
The landmark, which will be close to Eurostar's international station, is intended as an iconic symbol representing the regeneration of north-west Kent, and the eastwards growth of London.
???
London hasn't had any links with horses since the breweries stopped using them for deliveries.
Unless they're trying to suggest that Kent as modern and forward thinking as London was 80 years ago.... :demon:
-
It's really tacky. Why not three giant plaster ducks instead?
-
I'm not volunteering to muck out a 50m horse.
That's going to be one big pile.
-
First thought :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8j2ej5jqQw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8j2ej5jqQw)
second thought :
target for graffiti ::-)
-
Even less useful and more tacky than The Dome If they want something to celebrate the Olympics, than put the 2 big M's into training facilities for young athletes.
N
-
Well I like it.
But it does need a giant willy.
-
I prefer it to the big rusty radiator grille Oop Narrth;
but I would have preferred something a bit more stylistic like the excellent Shepway horse (which resides on the hill overlooking the Channel Tunnel terminal and attracted much opposition from people whose view of the concrete loading ramps might be spoilt) rather than just a big Sindy accessory
(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39197000/jpg/_39197999_horse_carving_203.jpg)
-
What with the 35 m "Kelpies" in Falkirk
(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44238000/jpg/_44238367_kelpies416.jpg)
...........and the Clydesdale at Easterhouse (much better than the bland Kent offering - but at a minimalist 4.5m)
Giant Horses seem to be taking over from the giant Phalluses popular at the Millenium.
-
I think its great - it'll be a fantastic 'WTF' moment as you drive past.
-
I think it has potential - but that which is proposed is a bit, well..... staid.
Had they gone for the prancing horse of Invicta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Arms-kent.jpg) - with which Kent has had a connection since the time of the Norman invasion, that would make sense.
Ho yes! 33 times its normal size and reared up on it's hind legs - that would turn a few heads for sure.
(Edit - as well as giving the structural engineers a run for their money :D)
This, however is going to be more of a shock-and-awe-lite effect.
A bit .... safe.
My little pony comes to mind.....
It could still prove to be a useful and entertaining diversion on the FNRttC to Whitstable as it's proposed site is a stone's throw from the route.
-
A White Horse?
I prefer a Glenfiddich ;)
-
It's really tacky. Why not three giant plaster ducks instead?
Yup, it does have a whiff of the Franklin Mint about it ;D
-
Why not three giant plaster ducks instead?
Maybe it's a big Horse I'm a Londoner
-
Maybe it's a big Horse I'm a Londoner
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
IMO it's not sufficiently stylised, and it shouldn't be white, but similar material to the angel o t N.
-
That Heavy Horse is absolutely bloody fantastic. I love it!
The white horse? I too thought "it's a bit, well, ordinary and Sindy-accessory". But it might work. Betcha Banksy puts a giant inflatable jockey on it. :)
-
it didn't exactly have stiff competition did it? :-\

It's boring and twee. Just because its big doesn't make it interesting. It's not like it's size will even be a huge engineering challenge these days.
-
I think its great - it'll be a fantastic 'WTF' moment as you drive past.

Let's hope b3ta user Hoogie doesn't find out:
b3ta.com qotw (http://www.b3ta.com/questions/shame/post44239)
Erm, another technically NSFW link. It's been making me laugh like an idiot for several years now though.

I absolutely agree with your second point - but I love the rustiness and muckiness of the Angel of the North. It gives it a bit of reality, since it connects it to the steel mills of Teesside and the iron of the Cleveland Hills, a connection to the (realtively) local area which this horse rather lacks.
-
I too thought "it's a bit, well, ordinary and Sindy-accessory".
I knew it looked familiar!
Better Sindy than Barbie though. Even I draw the line at pink horses.
-
White horses are a very Southern thing though owing to the chalk on / in the hills; I'm already thinking of a 200km ride that connects this statue with two other chalk versions (Folkestone and Litlington)
-
If the Invicta audaxes don't go past the giant horse, I shall feel shortchanged in years to come. That being said I managed to miss a Viking longship I cycled past on the Invicta 300 a couple of years ago.
-
We should have more "Big Art".
I would love to see the Angel of the North, it looks extraordinary.
I pity anyone on LSD seeing this horse for the first time though.
-
Elizabeth Googe is my favouote author!
;D
-
by far the best white horse is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uffington_White_Horse ;)
-
I like it.
I like big ideas.
-
It's naff. A realistic, down to colour, horse that size looks ridiculous.
I like the Angel of the North. I also like the Glasgow horse - and the only reason for not building a bigger version is that it could be too imitative.
BTW, Andy - agree about Uffington. Amazing, especially when you consider its age. It's not even a simple "cut off the turf" white horse, as most are: they cut trenches & filled 'em with bright white chalk. I cycle up there occasionally.
The Shepway one's also good.
But this thing - no. Dull, dull, dull. Franklin Mint, Cindy - all those. The only good thing about it is that the other contenders were worse. Rachel Whiteread, for example - her first cast interior of a house was good, a brilliant idea. But to regurgitate it for a commission like this? She can go & get stuffed.
-
I have to agree with Bledlow. This proposal is naffness taken to the nth degree.
-
I'm afraid this looks to me like an unsuccessful attempt at a logo for BT. Too twee.
The big white horse looks from the images to be a one-trick pony: the visual confusion because of the expectation of a familiar object being a certain size. But I'll reserve judgement until I see it.
I agree it shouldn't have been neutered.
-
It's a rubbish on an epic scale. Why not a nar*&&*()*&(*&*687689 NO CARRIER
-
It's in a boring pose, and it's wearing a bridle. What's that supposed to mean?
I agree with Mr. L.
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3453/3271030341_fb90b76633_m.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bruce_mcadam/3271030341/)
-
It's dull.
The Angel of the North is a fantastically striking image.
It's not a Barbie Horse writ large.
I know Invicta and all that, but hey - Invicta is traditionally depicted rampant (as i think Jurek pointed out upthread). Do the maths on that sucker, Wallinger!
It doesn't do anything; it doesn't say anything. It reminds me of the proposal for Brick Man at Leeds station. At the time, I was in favour of it, but, in retrospect, it had nothing to do with Leeds, and it was just a technical (and not very magnificent) challenge. Yeah. Big deal.
-
Like the Glasgow horse, mind. No bridle on that fella. ;)
-
Maybe I am simply a Philistine?
I love the Scottish Horse, I loved Terra Novalis, I loved the men in the sea at Formby... I think because the are all on a "Human" scale and you can interact.
This one has simply gone for size as opposed to any artistic merit or thought.
-
The Angel of the North is appropriate to the character of the place. I can't quite see the proposed White Horse in the same way.
As a welcome to our shores, post financial crisis, I think a large White Elephant would be better.
-
What about a giant bottle of beer ? Appropriate to Kent's heritage and the current culture ...
-
There was a group on facebook a while back that wanted to buy a rudy great dinosaur (lifesize) and put it on the white cliffs of Dover. The idea being that the first sight that an illegal immigrant would have upon appearing from a crate would be a life size dinosaur. Well that and that fact hat it would have been just plain silly!
-

Well: big Sindy accessory? Agree. Angel of the North? Disagree - I quite like it and it shows way more imagination than the (you said it ;)) big Sindy accessory.
The Shepway Horse is unquestionably a better bit of art than the Big Sindy Accessory®. However, it involved destruction of habitats supposedly protected from damage from projects of any type, unless there were "imperative reasons of over-riding public interest."
Natural England : News (http://www.english-nature.org.uk/news/story.asp?ID=131)
Now, it may be a nice horse - but: "imperative"?; "over-riding"?; "public interest"? Hmmm.
-
Radio interviewer was sounding-out local opinion on this subject in Ebbsfleet yesterday.
One guy said "in this time of credit crunch, it's gonna be rubbish and a sore eye". ;D
-
Waste of money >:(
I liked the idea of putting the money into supporting young athletes for 2012
-
How come we all like the Angel of the North suddenly?
It was slated at the time of its installation IIRC.

I've always liked the Angel of the North.

Yes it was slated.I didn't like it then & I like less now that it is a rusting eyesore on the landscape.
-
<Brian Sewell>
It's a bit shit.
</BS>
-
I love the Angel of the North and the Scottish Heavy Horse looks great
The Donkey of the South on the other hand looks totally crap
-
Surely this is the horse of Kent.
Now that, 100 metres high, made from a steel armature, clad with transluscent glass panels and lit up at night, that would be impressive, but 'Super Dobbin' no.
Damon.

-
I'd not seen any of this prior to making my comments upthread.
Seeing the above links has prompted me to respond with "OMG!"
Followed by a calmer "Oh Jesus!"
Did Chris Morris have a part in this?
The tell-tale marks are there.....

AIN'T NO HOOFS ON THAT BI....oh, hang on.
Enlarging stuff on such a scale does *something* to it that mere reproduction doesn't. I'm still blown away remembering the Sultan's Elephant and of course this:

Ah! Conceptual art. Very thought-provoking.
-
The French love a concept.
A yellow spot on the horizon slowly approaches the coast. People have gathered and watch in amazement as a giant yellow Rubber Duck approaches. The spectators are greeted by the duck, which slowly nods its head. The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn't discriminate people and doesn't have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!
Well I'd be frightened by a rubber duck with political connotations, no matter what its size.
Damon.
-
The bastards banned me so now I go to the Rose & Crown.
-
I used to work a mile or so from Swanscombe.
Any piece of art would improve it!

I don't know - it works for me just for the instant reaction - "Look at that huuuuuge Duck!" I would probably have the same reaction to stuff like that at six or sixty - sometimes that's enough for me.
-
It's sort of 'Das Duuk' all it needs is a 200 foot high Hawker Typhoon strafing it.

I think its great - it'll be a fantastic 'WTF' moment as you drive past.
Yes, like the Wicker Man on the M5 or the field of fibre glass camels etc.
It should be pink, or purple with big flowing mane and a sign that says "My Little Huge Pony"
-

Uffington is the definitive white horse. Most of the other 12 wiltshire ones are modern remakes (within the last 300 years). Wiltshire White Horses: Home page (http://wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/)

You mean the Kilburn White Horse
(http://www.yorkshire-guide.co.uk/images/kilburn-white-horse.jpg)
It's limestone and you can see it from York on a good day. I used to look out the window at it when I was bored in biology as a kid. It's a Victorian white horse though not an ancient one. I think it is supposed to be the biggest in the country though.
-
Hackpen White Horse (which I think features on a YACF calendar entry) is also Victorian
-
I think it should be the three giant plaster ducks and they should be on the White Cliffs to welcome all of those European tourists.
You know the ones the government tell us are flocking to this country this year now the pound is cheap. You ever seen 'em?
-
Surely a large white stiletto heel would have been more appropriate?
-
I don't see the point of a horsey looking horse in a county full of horses. It should be rampant at the very least. My Dad (in Kent) said at least isn't a pile of rust like the Angel of the North. ;)
-

Well, they don't go up north. It's grim up there.
-
They just need to erect a stonking great big gilt frame around the proposed equine installation and hey presto, we'd have ourselves a giant-sized 3D Stubbs (http://www.abcgallery.com/S/stubbs/stubbs.html) rip-off. :demon:

I'd rather we had a Thelwell (http://lesleysutherland.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/1965-thelwell-print_0_0_ysq4.jpg)

That horse is pointless. It is not even looking at the continent in a menacing way. It is not doing anything. It is just big. A big empty nothing.
It would be OK if it straddled the road and we had to drive under it or something. Or if it had a big todger that was a bit of a shock. What a waste to spend it on a static thing.
It must hace taken about 1 minute to download a picture of a horse and stick it on the picture a bit big like as an entry in the art contest. It has no meaning at all - which is probably why it is so right.
PS on the way down to Cornwall pre Xmas passed the wicker man on the M5. He had wood! a bloody great log. My daughters were very shocked. It had been removed by the time we came back tho.
-

But did you notice the camels or the dinosaur? Both are pieces of unoffficial 'public art', the camels have been there for years.

What annoys me is the "Angel of the South" references
Is every structure that is not north of Newcastle going to be dubbed "The Angel of the South"?
-
Yes. But only until it's built and we're lumbered with super Dobbin and it will get it's own identity. :-\

It's only cause there's nowt worth speaking of south of the Midlands :P
Course, they could have The B Of The Bang now it's no longer welcome in Manc.

I know it's not glittery or inflatable, but is anyone else thinking of Jeff Koons?

I quite like it. Could have been better though.
I've never seen the Angel in the flesh, but I loved it when a bunch of Newcastle fans made it a giant Shearer shirt :P

The "Spinney" as one of my Antipodean colleagues calls it is a typical British institution.
Late
Over budget
Councils failed to write the contracts so the TAxpaer picked up the bill
The Company was allwed to build the profitable bits and then delayed the unprofitable ones.

Yep - a real testament.

More "Wicker Man" then "Angel", I think.
In Newcastle city centre there is a shop called "Bagel Of The North" ;D
