Title: Shop for small items
Post by: mrcharly-YHT on 12 May, 2008, 10:35:24 am
I had a fettling weekend, and brought my old Dawes Discovery back into working order (for stepdaughter to use).

Trouble is, the fettling has used up my stock of bits n’ bobs. Particularly cable outer, ferrule ends, brake and gear cables, cable caps and suchlike.

Which of the many online shops sells these basics at reasonable prices?

I've always used Half0rds for bits and bobs like that.  I'd be interested to hear if they're sold online at all.

It is possible to get absolutely all the parts needed to build a bike online.

Try eBay, St John Street Cycles, Wiggle and Chain Reaction.

You can use blobs of epoxy resin to prevent fraying instead of end caps.

I tend to get these sorts of things off of ebay.  For example, I bought 12 brake cables, with ferrules, for a fiver.

The last time I needed such things, I nipped into Halfords on a Sunday, had a chat with the mechanic while he was mucking about, asked him how much it would cost for a few cable finishing bits, and was delighted when he stuck his hand into the toolbox and gave me half a dozen of each  :)

I think SJS or something used to do a box of workshop sweepings. I got one once, a bit of everything there, nuts bolts, off cuts of outers, brake block holders, spacers, cogs, you name it.

Surely bits & bobs is a job for the lbs.

Putney Cycles patiently went through a long list with me today (but it was topped off with a new saddle at the end, so they got their profit).

SJS do have a good stock of 'the usual' bits... I'm not sure if anything you're describing is more specialist, in which case it's out of my pay grade.

They're awfully nice, too, if you can't work out which 'bit' you actually need and try using the old fashioned telephonic device.  :)
