Title: The Big Ride, London, 28/4/2012
Post by: Wowbagger on 28 February, 2012, 02:39:11 pm
I've just had an email about this.

http://lcc.org.uk/articles/lcc-announces-the-big-ride-uks-biggest-ever-mass-cycle-calling-for-safe-and-inviting-streets-for-cycling refers.

I suppose this could go in any one of three places: P&OBI, On the Road, or here. I was thinking we could add our collective weight and turn it into a YACF social as well.

I'll do my best to be there.

Apologies - it clashes with FNRttC, York to Hull.  It's grim Up North.

Giving this a bump. What about pub & curry afterwards?

Jan and I might bring the tandem. It always goes down well on big social rides.

Hope to be there on a big red recumbent tandem. Just in case that wasn't noticeable enough, we'll probably have a big "smiley" flag on the back ! Maybe meet some of you there

We're thinking of joining the feeder ride at Stratford station. We could do either Barking or Romford, but Romford would involve getting an earlier train and (probably) changing. Not many trains from Southend stop at Romford.

Did think of coming up on individual Trikes, but given Graham's poor/almost non existent eyesight thought there was less chance of him causing carnage if he was on the back on the Tandem !

If people do want curry after I can highly recommend a place in Vauxhall, a short cycle from the ride finish.

They allow you to BYO alcohol (there is an offy next door) and you don’t so much choose from a menu as share copious amounts of food with each other (they check how many veggies etc they need to take into account and then bring out a selection of tasty food). It’s called Hot Stuff in SW8 if you want to look up the rave reviews on t’internet. The food is really delicious and not expensive.

I’d need to book very soon if it was a big group though, because they are a tiny family place and have a bit of a cult following. So if anyone fancies this let me know soon.

EDIT: just realised they don't open until 7pm, so perhaps not ideal, unless people want to spend a fair few hours in a Pubbe first...

Giving this a bit of a bump.

The ride finishes on the Embankment around 2 p.m. allegedly.

Route here:http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=210546813079394734054.0004b9a37c21a7d5a5e28&msa=0&ll=51.507514,-0.141449&spn=0.027032,0.070295

I'd go along with Laura's suggestion other than that I will probably be very ready for a late lunch by 2 p.m.

What do others think?

The Met Office is forecasting rain from 4 p.m. but prior to that mild (13 deg C) and cloudy with hardly any wind.

Where is a good place to meet? Although we will be riding in with the Stratford feeder, I'd sooner get in a bunch with the YACF massive when we start.

Post by: Notsototalnewbie on 27 April, 2012, 09:57:19 am
YACFers could hang around the Animals War Memorial which is next to the start?

Unfortunately I now have to be back in Stockwell around 4pm as I am at the mercy of a plumber due to my central heating springing a leak. I could possibly come back out depending on how long he takes.

I shall have a think about where might be a good venue for a late lunch (suggestions welcome, obv). If anyone else is up for a late lunch please say so, as how big a group we are will dictate, to an extent, where we go…

I'm definitely up for it.  Someone say where and when we're meeting (the Animals War Memorial sounds like a good idea) and I'll be there.  I think Zipperhead is planning on attending as well...

I've just found out where the Animals at War Memorial is so I'll make for that. Jan is doubtful as she seems to have picked up a sore throat / cold from Martha. Should be at Stratford at 9 and will come in with that feeder ride.

I'm thinking of booking the Players Bar and Kitchen (attached to a theatre but you don't need to be seeing a play to go there). I've never been before, but a) it is close to the end of the ride and b) I have a Tastecard, which means a 50% discount on food for up to six of us, which means much cheapness.

You might want to bring gurt big locks though, if you're not onna Brommie.

I need to book if I want to use the Tastecard so I'll confirm with who's there at the beginning of the ride.

Just trying to decide on which bike to bring - fixed can be a bit hairy on mass rides in my experiences.

I should hopefully be there on my Flying Gate via the feeder ride from Hackney. I'm resigned for a bit of dampness, but it can't be worse than some of the commutes done in the last couple of weeks.

Dear lord, that was a lot of cyclists.

Could've done without having to listen to lengthy speeches while temperatures edged towards Bejam. But I guess there is a cause etc......

We were stood, fairly tightly packed, with the front of the ride in the proximity of the junction of Park Lane with Curzon Street, and behind us all three lanes of the southbound carriageway were filled totally by cyclists, all the way up to Upper Brook Street, and I'm told that at the point when we set off, there were still more joining the back of the ride feeding in from the park.

I managed to cross paths with a fair few from here: Wowbagger, Teamonster, Marcusjb, Notsototalnewbie + Rob, Charlotte, Two Flat Erics, the inimitable Sgt. Titus Halliwell, and probably a fair few others...

Unfortunately the glacial pace of the ride with its many, many marshalled stops did little to warm me up.

So when the opportunity arose to escape over Waterloo Bridge to the south side, I took it.

Apologies if anyone misconstrued that as me being anti-social but I really was ver' ver' cold and miz by that point.

Astonishing turn-out though - who knows what it might have been like if it had been a sunny day.

I can't imagine the LCC will be anything other than pleased with that.

That was indeed a lot of cyclists.

Staggering considering the weather.

Bit too much standing around at the start, it was pretty damned cold.  Wish I had put booties on as my feet were chilly.

Wide range of people and bikes.

Fabulous and good to meet a few faces from here!

Just got back.  What a brilliant turnout despite the awful weather. I tagged along with the Merton feeder ride poss.  I did get uncomfortably cold though, what with all the hanging about.

My search for overshoes that are actually waterproof rather than neoprene poultices, begins now.

Disappointed that I didn't bump into anyone of this parish.

Back in Eltham now. What a good turnout. I joined the feeder from Greenwich which was a tad slow and managed to lose about half the contingent.
Didn't get to the start until 11.30ish so missed the meet at AWM.
The only person of this parish that I saw on the route, was an SLR toting Charlotte.
Did meet Jane at Greenwhich though.

Well, that was a bit soggy.  Lots and lots of people and probably good job it was raining. Goodness knows how many would have turned up on a lovely sunny day. I went out to collect all those I had managed to persuade to join this ride over the last few weeks.  OH and his sisters just laughed at me and returned to the warmth of their respective hearths.  I knocked on my neighbour's door, their two boys, 9 and 11, already on their bikes pedalling up and down the road.  Mum answered the door and told me that, despite the boy's obvious enthusiasm, the family would not be coming, after all.  She said, "They might be raring to go and full of enthusiasm now, but after half an hour in the rain, they will be making us feel that suicide is the easy way out."
And the other neighbour plus family backed out too.  Never mind.  Good to see people and chat  at Greenwich.  At Deptford, my tyre was invaded  by a massive shard of glass which sliced a large curved gash into it.  The tube was struggling to get out through the hole and foolishly punctured itself.  I waved the back marker on and changed the tube, slipped a good length of the old tube inside the tyre and caught them up
again later.  Didn't notice the cold and rain till during  the long wait and then tortuously slow progress down Park Lane when I wasn't generating enough effort to keep any blood flowing at all, or so it felt.  So slipped off through Mayfair and Soho and finally back home via Waterloo.  I could hear the ride even when I couldn't see it.

I was one of the unofficial marshals on the Greenwich feeder - were you the person I was talking to with the big f-off panniers?

The feeder ride was slow, but we had people on that ride who had not cycled in years. IMO, if we get newbies coming on the rides then that is a win. That traffic filtering by plod near Blackfriars Bridge was very confusing, which managed to split up the group  :-[

The ride itself was poor. Slower than the sky-ride, John, Bill and I ended up walking it. Then John and I saw a Costa, slipped away and eventually wended our way towards Temple where I ended up chatting to the lass that had set up the Addison Lee protest on facebook - it was great talking to her

Felt very shaky when I got home, the rain and chill had really got to me. Anyway I had the turnout to around 6-8, 000 cyclists. Shame not to have seen many yacf-ers, but impressed by the spirit of people on that ride.

Not at all.  I was in much the same condition by the time I got to Westminster.  I'd been shooting some photos and had lost contact with the YACF group but forged on to the finish regardless.  When some bloke with a microphone congratulated me on a "great effort" I considered stopping specifically to slap him...

Anyway, sorry to miss you all at the pub - I got word from Julian that she was on her way home from the northern edition of the FNRttC and I made all haste for Ealing to meet her.  We have just got out of the shower and there will be Durty Curry shortly.

Until it arrives, I've been going through my photos...

don't think so, he doesn't use the forum that much. He might know him by his real name. I know he knows a few recumbent riders round Ealing/West London, as he often chats to them when he's riding his ICE trike.

I was indeed highly unimpressed with the amount of standing around at the start, and I think a helluva lot of other people were too. And that stop-start riding is quite difficult on a bike with a backpedal brake (you can't reset the pedals easily).

But it was brilliant to catch up with both familiar forummers and new ones and great to see so many thousands of people. I particularly loved the little lad really going for it on his pedal-less Isla-bike-alike that Charlotte got a photo of. It was a shame to lose Charlotte but I think everyone was fairly desperate to get themselves somewhere that they could get warm (and it seems some fab photos were gained). We had a rather lovely time at the pub afterwards, I had a whole baked Camembert, some very nice red wine, and about ten profiteroles...we had to bugger off at 3.30pm for the plumber. He is not here yet. Ahem.

Just to juxtapose this rather awful photo against C's brilliant ones, here we all are at t'pubbe (Clarion, Butterfly and Andrij didn't do the Big Ride, but we let them in anyway)

That Clarion and That Butterfly have some staying power - I'm assuming they're pretty much kip-less since last night's FNRttC.

So, at the risk of seeming rude...

Can anyone identify the orange YACF shirt wearer next to Andrij in your pic.

I know him from a previous ride.

Apologies are forthcoming  (orange YACF shirt wearer), but very much in a queue after the ones for a particular photo.....

Despite the foul weather, I'm really glad I made the effort to get to this ride.  I suppose the conditions could have been worse, but my initial reaction was that the event was going to be a poorly-attended damp squib. I couldn't be bothered with a feeder ride and took the train straight to Lpoo St and made my way to Hyde Park Corner and then found the Animals' War Memorial. There was no-one I knew there so I carefully ate the marmite sandwiches I had brought with me in anticipation that a few of us would have lunch somewhere. I also ordered a coffee and waited, unimpressed by the group of cyclists around the Speakers' Corner café that remained disappointingly small. YACFers arrived in dribs and drabs: MarcusJB and Teamonster, the latter on the front of the most amazing recumbent tandem. One lovely surprise was a text from Nutkin, who was to put in a appearance. Charlotte arrived en Brompton and I still can't get used to Jurek on a fixie with mudguards.

After loads of hanging around we set off and then, five minutes later, we stopped again so that the organisers could make speeches that perhaps the 200 people at the front could have heard. We were not far from the amplifiers and loudspeakers, but I could not make out anything intelligible. Anyone behind us, which must have been about 90% of the ride, would have ben able to hear nothing. Some of the more svelte forummers were beginning to feel the cold.

Eventually we made proper progress, but mostly it was a test of slow cycling and balancing for as long as possible before putting a foot down. Two Flat Erics and Domestique came and had a natter: the hardy pair had caught the train from Westcliff to Barking and come in on that feeder ride. Just as we were being led into Temple Station, the official ride finish, Notsototalnewbie had a better idea and we left the Embankment and returned towards Charing Cross because she had the facility to buy cheap food at a particular café so we went there to find it shut. Luckily my calorie radar was active and I've noticed an "All Bar One" a short way back in Villiers Street so five of us settled round a table there. Almost simultaneously a few of us noticed that we had missed calls from Charlotte, whom I had last seen pointing her big one at people. I hastily texted a reply but by that time she was on the tube heading for Julian, who was returning from a triumphal overnight ride to Hull.

Whereas initially there were five of us there (Nutkin, NSTN, Rob, Parsley and myself) we were joined by Butterfly and Clarion, fresh from their travails to Hull, and, later, Andrij, who had been purchasing exotic velocipedes from Mike. We had a good lunch (the minted lamb burger seemed to be a favourite) and the profiteroles went down well, washed as they were by Doom Bar, merlot and latte.

My one regret was that I hadn't taken with me the small gift I have for Nutkin. However, we have agreed that we need another ride some time in the not too distant future so that I can offer her some balls to suck whereas she's going to give me a good fudge. It'll be sweet, there's no doubt of that.

Thanks C!

Oooh you are too kind...I'd bloody love poncing about in 1920s gear to do a calendar, sounds like great fun.

It is just the most lovely, comfy, stately bike to ride. I ride everywhere since I got it because it's so compatible with 'normal' clothing. It's quite my favourite even though it is completely impractical on anything resembling a hill. And when I do ride one of my other bikes, I really miss the backpedal brake (which initially I was very suspicious of).

Many thanks to all for turning what could have been a very cold wet lonely crawl, into a pleasurable day out. It was great to meet and put faces to some more names from the forum.

I started after a nights CM'ing the previous evening by getting up far earlier than was civil, so that I could wash the bike* for the ride. I then joined the Harrow feeder, where we were seen off by our councillor. We took an 'interesting' NCN route approved by the Harrow branch of the LCC. At first I didn't understand why the feeder had been allocated 2 hrs to cover the 10-12 miles from Harrow to Hyde Park, but once we got underway on the approved route, it all clicked. lots of back streets, alleys etc, including several "Cyclists Dismount" sections. In future, I thinks I'll give feeder rides a miss, cane it down the Harrow road or the A40, and give myself an extra hour in bed.

Once I reached the staging area, there were far more cyclists than I had anticipated, especially considering the weather, and having missed the meeting at the Animals at War memorial  (which I only realised when I bared my YACF logo in a Superman stylee at two strangers at the memorial to be greeted with blank, slightly confused, slightly wary stares), It was extreme fortune that a little closer to the front I spotted the unmistakeable Charlotte).

We waited for an age whilst the obligatory speeches were made at the very front. We could only hear every 4th word or so, and we were in the front tenth of the ride. Those at the back would have no idea what was going on.

BTW. Sorry if I was a little cold with you Jurek, I didn't realise you were you until we were just about to set off, I just thought you were a random stranger until Charlotte spoke to you.

Aaanyway, we had a very slow pootle around the streets of london, making lots of noise, until near the end when Nutkin, Rob, NSTN, Wowbagger and I headed off in search of food and warmth. It was a shame that we lost Charlotte along the ride.
A very pleasant time was spent in the pub, where many calories were consumed, and fun was had.
It was good to finally meet Clarion and Butterfly, who looked remarkably good considering that they had just returned from the FNRttC, allthough the way they went for dessert first showed how drained they were! It was good to see Andrij again too.

I was bloody knackered at the end and dissapeared off around 4ish, and have to admit that I bottled out of the ride home and took the tube. I think an early night is in order.

A top day out, we really must do it again, but with better weather please.

* ETA what a waste of time that was, after riding the brakes all day in the wet, it's blacker that when I started.

My partner, David Arditti, led the Brent feeder from Kingsbury. Aside from those who had volunteered to help marshal there were no other riders at Kingsbury.
They went on to Gladstone Park to meet the feeder from south Brent where, yet again, there were only established Brent Cyclists. Proceeding to The Crown in Cricklewood, they joined a dozen Barnet Cyclists and cycled to Park Lane.
Any speeches were inaudible to David, who was totally unaware of their existence!
David did not return home until after 7pm, having socialised on the way. He and The Vole were cold, wet and demoralised.
Still, a turnout of 10,000 is fantastic.
Shame our corner of Outer London sent so few.

Great to see people again, and actually quite enjoyable (if you discount the cold, the rain, the hanging about for an hour of inaudible speeches and the constant stop-start!) but lunch was great and seeing that little kid on the wooden scootalong was fantastic!

By the time I got home though, I had come to the conclusion that I would have been drier if I'd spent the day sitting in the bath...

Dear lord, that was a lot of cyclists.

Could've done without having to listen to lengthy speeches while temperatures edged towards Bejam. But I guess there is a cause etc
So that's why us at the back were hanging around, freezing and soaking.  The cause doesn't justify a few people, some of whom, IMO, may be a smidgin too fond of the sound of their own voices,  not thinking about how all those thousands who came out in support of that cause, many of whom were small children, might be feeling and just getting things started with the minimum of pointless pontificating.
Sorry to moan. It was great to see all those riders.  To be honest, I didn't hear or see who was speaking, so I don't know for sure if my criticism is totally justified.

Oh, you weren't the only person to make that criticism...a few of us at the front were shouting at them to just let us get going. There really is only so much you can say on the matter and the talking went on for some time. It's not like you warm up on the ride, either.

I wasn't close enough to tell really, but am fairly sure that the blogger from ibikelondon was one of them, and there was also a woman but I couldn't tell who she was...there was about three of them standing on the podium altogether.

The lengthy speeches were really ill-judged in my opinion, they would have known people were getting fed up but they kept yammering on even after people started shouting that they wanted to get going (including me...I had begun to channel the kind of Rage normally reserved for off-roading).

Yes it was Mark I believe from ibikelondon. The woman was from Resonance FM and the other chap was Jamie Crick from Classic FM. I suppose with cycling being more in the public eye we are getting the rise of the kewl cycling blogger who are turning into right little media whores. A group of us yesterday were also discussing a certain bod from LCC, who at the Blackfriars Bridge protest whenever there was a photo-op with the politicians and celebrities just rushed to the front to get their picture taken with them.

I too had no idea there were speeches being made while most of us froze in the rain out of earshot and eyesight. That's pretty poor planning really given that it would have been of (dubious) benefit to less than 1% of the participants. That sort of thing also stops it being very family friendly as keeping kiddies on bikes entertained while corralled tightly in Park Lane for half an hour looked somewhat challenging.

I enjoyed the feeder ride down from Hackney, the two bikes with sound systems helped to add to a carnival atmosphere and it was a great feeling when we met up with one of the other feeders at Old St. The Hackney feeder didn't get to the main ride until after the front had gathered on Park Lane, so I missed the YACFers at the animal monument.

The ride itself was less enjoyable and felt more subdued than the feeder ride. Apart from the waiting in the cold and wet, the density towards the back was such that it really wasn't possible to ride and we were moving at less than walking pace. It felt more like a traditional London demo/march than a bike ride. Being on a fixed wheel meant this was very tiring on my left knee with constant stopping and starting. In the end we peeled of at Piccadilly Circus at about 1pm.

Our feeder ride was fun, getting the time to speak to the newer cyclists was great. I know that Charlie from LCC is on yacf but I don't think he is on here much.

Coralled is a good choice of word to use.

We, 2FE and myself, did the feeder ride from Barking. In terms of riding I am glad we did, I have always wanted to know a route from Barking Stn. into London and it was good to gain some local info for that.
The ride itself, on a warmer dry day that would have been a superb day out, imo. Just glad I packed my waterproofs  :) It was great to see so many people smiling and making an effort.

not at all… feeder ride was much more fun, apart from detour through LCN anti cycling barriers… anyway my hunch is that for LCC to get the closed roads, the "ride" was treated as a demo by the police, so it was bunched up as much as possible to get along the route in one block… I certainly did no riding, it was walking pace. I gave up at Piccadilly and went for some lunch… an hour later the roads were still closed but barricaded so to cycle on them had to wheel bike over pavement and avoid angry police on motorbikes  ??? did ride along the closed embankment a for bit which was nice
