BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Concerns over Olympic drug test (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7516484.stm)

'might have been' is not sufficient proof. I am pleased that WADA have strict protocols. However, these should be reviewed periodically. It should be possible to test further these suspicious samples to establish what the extra bands are. Possible, but expensive. And also probably not a verified test which raises the cost yet further with legal appeals.

Interesting.

Presumably that partly explains why the Tour is using the French agency rather than WADA, and why they are getting results on riders who have been testing clean up to now.

And maybe also why they are all Italian and Spanish.

Somewhat amusingly, it turns out that the new brand of EPO that Ricco got caught on was because they'd put a tracer in it!

There will be a lot of Athletic hopefuls getting rather worried!

I wondered whether that might be how they were catching people so effectively.

Presumably that means it comes from a major pharmaceuticals company.

Roche.

Ricco busted at Tour with help of planted molecule: Fahey - tourdefrance - Sport (http://www.smh.com.au/news/tourdefrance/ricco-busted-with-help-of-planted-molecule/2008/07/23/1216492496759.html)

The tracer will be there for very good therapeutic reasons. It shows a great move by the pharma companies to collaborate on this as they dislike having their drugs misused as much as the next person.

The tracer won't help with all the cheap knock offs which will soon be piliing out of labs in China & India...on their way to a dodgy interweb site near you soon.

It has bought time to develop and validate the assay for CERA though.

Tracer story now discredited by Roche (although there may still be one - the real reason its there is to detect counterfeiting, and to check which product is sold in which market - ie  drug bought cheaply in "developing" market, and sold expensively in "mature" market)
