Title: Get your bent cucumbers here!
Post by: Cudzoziemiec on 24 July, 2008, 03:11:48 am
The EU are to allow bent cucumbers, small carrots, etc.

Bent cucumbers? With prices up, EU won't bin them - Yahoo! News UK (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20080723/tod-uk-eu-fruit-size-063ac92.html)

But only, it seems, if they are labelled to the effect of being "not pretty, don't eat raw", and only, of course, if member states enable it nationally.

It's appalling isn't it that they were banned in the first place?

Why on earth should a misshapen veg not be eaten raw? Am I missing something?

To appease the French, Italian, Spanish and Greek agribusinesses that supply our perfectly shaped but often tasteless fruit and veg?  I assume this from the facts reported on the BBC News website that said those were the countries apposing the relaxing of the relevant trading standards.

Is the carrot still classified as a fruit though?

I think rafletcher has it, and also to appease the supermarkets who can find it more convenient or easier to sell food to our eyes than our tongues.
