Certainly.  I think he worked as a plumber for the whole of his professional football career, too, didn't he?  The old grainy films and the baggy shorts obscure just how tricky his footwork was.

I recall an interview hew did with Jimmy Armfield some years and a touching recollection that always stuck with me is, on the day of an England home game, how he always used to get the train from Preston and meet Stanley Mathews at Stoke and then travel down to London together on the train before the big game.

The point being that probably most people were utterly oblivious to who they actually were.

That was a different era. By some measure.

My late aunt, a fervent Preston NE supporter, had a photo of Sir Tom and herself on display. He was presenting her with a cup for ballroom dancing.
