Title: 500 km in March
Post by: Deano on March 14, 2017, 11:37:44 pm
I know there are riders who do more (nutters, I tell you), but I was quite pleased with myself for riding a 500 in March. What? Why? Where? Read more below...

Are you sure they didn't think you were a nutter when they gave you the free food?

I didn't want to blow the mystique just in case.

Lovely, Dean, thanks.  I particularly enjoyed  "named for the Union between England and Scotland. Weak bridge, the sign said" - should be in POBI.  you were really travelling for that first 220!

I hope you did your duty and amended the sign at Shilbottle.

Nah, but everyone calls it Shitbottle anyway.

Inspirational. Thanks, Dean, for allowing me to enjoy vicarious cycling. If I can string a couple of 15 milers together over the next couple of months I'll try and persuade Peter to come up with me for a midweek mosh Northallerton Social in the early Summer.

" I skirted Falkirk and followed some tiny lanes which climbed away from the Union Canal. When I was plotting the route, these banks were lost in the noise created by the Lammermuirs and the Pennines, but what a bastard that bit was."
Ooops. That area is known as the "Bathgate Alps"...
(Pedantic moment - it is Grangemouth, not "Grangetown".)

I enjoyed that, thank you.

Cheers! I do know the difference between Grangemouth and Grangetown, but I think I'm getting it mixed up with this Grangetown (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Grangetown,+Middlesbrough/@54.5723533,-1.1787792,13z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x487eee6e42feb755:0x5bae415cf86b31e2!8m2!3d54.580842!4d-1.144222). It's the same sort of industryscape of chimneys and refineries.

Thanks for an interesting report Deano.  You're right about those quiet roads and fab views in the borders - we're up there next month, although I won't be doing that sort of distance, I will be visiting the honey farm cafe and crossing the chain bridge.

Great report Deano, loved reading about your damp nocturnal trip down through the borders. I don't believe I have ever cycled through Eskdalemuir in the dry!
