I think this is an excellent idea, although probably more expensive than putting £1000 behind the bar at the wake to make people turn up.

I have just heard an American postulate that the 1908 Tunguska Event was caused by Nikola Tesla.

Apparently his Long Island experiment produced a 'death ray'.

He wanted to demonstrate this with an explosion at the North Pole - and overshot a bit.

I used to think 'You couldn't make this shit up'. I'm not so sure . . .

Police in Siberia have fined a local blogger for cruising the streets of Tyumen inside a bathtub, stirring a social media storm in his support.
...

“Do whatever you want, they’re still going to judge you for the rest of your life,” he wrote in an Instagram post announcing his bathtub ride.

Tyumen traffic police said they saw the online images and fined both the driver and the bather for violating safety rules.

“The 29-year-old driver and the 32-year-old passenger of the self-made trailer admitted to committing an administrative offense, saying they just wanted to have fun,” the police said in a statement Tuesday.

(Originally spotted this story via Twitter, but luckily I found a news aggregator site instead of the Daily Mail)

Quote
The victim and his soldier friend, whose names have not been released, had fallen out and been fighting in the city of Dnipro in south-eastern Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Oblast region. The soldier pulled the pin out of the grenade before running off, leaving the man holding down the lever while shouting for help. Pictures show a number of policemen surrounding him on the ground, bravely helping him hold onto the grenade’s safety lever, and at one point even using sticky tape to secure their hands to what they believed to be a live grenade about to go off

When Hallandale Beach Mayor Keith London said “sphincter bleaching is a very up and coming business,” during the City Commission’s budget discussion Monday night, he may have been right. But whether he thought anal bleach had anything to do with public safety budgets — the topic being discussed — remains unclear.

Why London thought it relevant, much less appropriate, to accuse a female commissioner of making her living from bleaching her own anus is even more baffling.

“Was it getting my sphincter bleached, is that what I earned my income for?” London said to Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub, as the two exchanged personal attacks. “No that would be you.”

What did the mayor even mean by that? London couldn’t be reached for comment.

A gas station owner in Jacksonville is extremely pissed that people keep warming their urine in the store microwave.

"They walk in off the street, microwave urine containers then, leave," said On the Fly (yes, that's the real name) convenience store owner Parlu Patel to WLTV.

According to the television station, the store is within walking distance of a LabCorp drug testing facility. For the unfamiliar, it's not uncommon for anyone who needs to pass a drug test to use someone else's urine, and to get away with it, it needs to be at least body temperature.

Patel has posted a sign that says, "Only for food use, do not microwave urine."

Reminds me of an episode in the late 50s when a Belfast dockyard crane-driver and his mate got drunk, and the driver borrowed his company "car" to take his chum home to Dundonald, 5 miles or so out of town. He then drove the crane back again, managing to hit both posts of the dockyard gates in doing so. Over the entire trip he damaged around 80 parked cars.

The Kimbolton kart circuit has only a limited number of race days, so when some infernal busybody from the local council saw a large number of cars parked at the track on a non-racing Sunday, he kicked up a fuss and the BHPC is now persona non grata at the venue.  Yes, it's our fault for our non-engines not disturbing the peace.

Not for the first time have I thought they should get rid of the 'sports' class, which nobody seems to understand anyway, and have one for turning up without the aid of a motor vehicle.  Perhaps with a variation for a particularly stealthy approach.

An Irish Jack Sparrow impersonator who married the ghost of a pirate has revealed she has split from her 300-year-old hubby.

Earlier this year Amanda Sparrow Large, 46, said she’d found her “soulmate” in a Haitian pirate from the 1700s who was executed for thieving on the high seas.

The loved-up couple were legally married by a shaman priest in a boat off the Irish coast in international waters.

But now the mum from Drogheda, Co Louth, has revealed the unlikely union is over.

The Australian government and the utterly batshit crazy anti-encryption law.  TL;DR, The law enables government agencies to compel companies to break encryption on their own products if said agencies believe that a crime has been, or may be, committed.

Never mind that the companies currently, in many cases, have no access to the customer's data. Never mind that this will fundamentally undermine much of modern 'net commerce. Never mind that this will mean the end of hi-tech development in Australia.

Not just the cow bells, but they are complaining about the smell

In my little part of the upper left-hand corner of USANIA, when one purchases property within 1/4 mile of agriculturally-zone land, that fact must be disclosed.  Part of a "freedom to farm" act meant to avoid nuisance claims.

Several summers ago, a farmer spread a considerable amount of chicken manure on his field.  The aroma spread for much more than 1/4 mile.

They'll also drink Guinness, the downside being that motor oil tastes better.

It's best, when showering any kind of bear, to ensure they are wearing a close-fitting swimming cap.

Your comfort food prayers are answered, mac and cheese lovers.

Costco has blessed us with a 27-pound “Storage Bucket” of the ooey-gooey good stuff containing 180 servings. This gluttonous golden opportunity is helpfully listed under “Emergency Kits & Supplies” on the Costco (https://www.costco.com/.product.100108871.html) website.

Although it’s actually been around on the down low for a few years, this cheesy pasta product is suddenly so popular (https://people.com/food/costco-27-pound-mac-and-cheese-bucket/) that it’s temporarily out of stock.

Emotional support animals, part 2*:

Quote
On a recent Monday afternoon, Joie Henney walked into the Glatfelter Community Center at the Village at Sprenkle Drive, an assisted-living development north of York, with his emotional support animal on a leash.

He walked by an elderly woman sitting on a bench by a window, reading a book. The woman glanced up from her book, took a look at Joie's emotional support animal, shrugged and went back to her book.

Which seemed kind of unusual. Joie’s emotional support animal is a 4-1/2 foot alligator. There must be some currency to the adage that if you live long enough, you’ll see everything.

Obviously a new fashion. Last week we had a dromedary (one hump or two, vicar?) on the railway line from Melun to Montargis. People were complaining that the trains were delayed, but folk who'd been to both places were chanting "send more dromedaries". Anyway, initial consensus made it a one-L lama until experts from the Légion Etrangère intervened.

Alabama police say a dispute over crab legs at a dinner buffet ended in a brawl that left two people facing misdemeanor charges.

Huntsville police officer Gerald Johnson says he was eating at the Meteor Buffet restaurant when a fight broke out.

Johnson tells WHNT-TV that diners were using service tongs like fencing swords and plates were shattering, and a woman was beating a man. Johnson says diners had been waiting in line for crab legs for more than 10 minutes, and they lost their tempers once the food came out.

Oh, Canada...

Quote
When Adam Gerle went to work one morning this week, he was thrilled to finally find a parcel with a frozen big toe in it.

Gerle is the general manger of the Downtown Hotel (https://downtownhotel.ca/) in Dawson City, Canada, which is world-renowned for an extremely gross traditional drink - the Sourtoe Cocktail.

Since 1973, visitors of the Yukon bars have been challenged to drink a shot of whiskey with a mummified human toe floating inside. To join the club -- and get a certificate from the bar -- the drinkers' lips must touch the toe. Over 86,000 Sourtoe Cocktails have been served since.

The bit about the donor sounds about normal for a bootneck, though. :demon:

Quote
The latest big toe to reach the hotel belonged to Nick Griffiths, a former British Marine who lost it during a winter ultra marathon in 2018, according to a statement by Downtown Hotel.

Griffiths, 47, dropped out of the 2018 Yukon Arctic Ultra after he got frostbite on his left foot due to temperatures dropping to minus 40.

While in hospital, the Briton offered to donate the toes to the hotel "in the hopes of returning to the Yukon to do the Sourtoe Cocktail with his own toe," the statement says.

Speaking of alligators, and Florida...

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/florida-couple-use-alligator-for-gender-reveal-party-a4166926.html

At least using an alligator is slightly less environmentally irresponsible than the Arizona Border Patrol agent who shot at an explosive target in 2017, starting a wildfire...

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/border-patrol-agent-pleads-guilty-starting-wildfire-fire-gender-reveal-n915441

Oh. Popping balloons, right.  On first sight I imagined something like a gathering where everyone whipped off their loincloths at the same time.

Whipping off an alligator I could understand - I mean, who would want to wear one anyway? - but having the Border Patrol fire at an explosive codpiece seems a bit Darwinesque.

Alabama man denies pet is 'methed-out' attack squirrel:

Quote
An Alabama man wanted on drug and gun charges, who authorities said kept an "attack squirrel" in his apartment, denied allegations that he fed his squirrel meth to "keep it aggressive."

"Narcotics investigators arrested one man and are looking for another after they executed a search warrant Monday that yielded meth, drug paraphernalia, body armor, and a squirrel," said a statement from the Limestone County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.

Investigators searched an Athens, Alabama, apartment Monday after getting a tip that Mickey Paulk, 35, was keeping a methamphetamine-fueled "attack squirrel" at the residence, the statement said.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/alabama-man-denies-pet-methed-out-attack-squirrel-n1019386

Paulk's since been arrested on multiple felony warrants unrelated to the squirrel.

I like some veggie burgers* (some are awful, the EU should really invest its time into categorizing them). The beanish ones are best. I'm unconvinced by the pretend meat stuff. I had one of the 'impossible burger' things and it was OK but I think if you expect a cow burger you're still going to be a bit disappointed.

I can understand why someone might be veggie and crave meat – if you're not eating meat for ethical reasons for instance – it's possible to crave a burger (and bacon, oh bacon). I've no issue with substitutes in general if they address that need, just that some of them aren't very good. Others are reasonable if not quite the same (Cauldren veggies sausages for instance, which I still wolf down in quantity). The Impossible Burger I had wasn't a bad substitution, but you'd not muddle it for a good cow burger, but it's probably a better bet than the cheap and nasty sawdust burger. I think it tried too hard, and to be honest, there's perfectly good veggie burgers that are fine as they are.

It depends how steep the slope really is. If it's as steep as Charlet (Woerth's guide) states, then they are probably tracks made by snow/ice/stones rolling down.

Someone left old TVs outside 50 homes in Virginia while wearing a TV on his head. No one knows why.  :D

Quote
It was kind of like Christmas — except it was August, the only presents were vintage television sets, and Santa had a TV on his head.

Residents of more than 50 households in Henrico County, Va., woke up this weekend to find old-style TVs outside their doorsteps, said Matt Pecka, a lieutenant with the local police department. Pecka said police began receiving reports about the TVs early Sunday. By the morning, their phones were clogged with calls.
...

Each home received exactly one TV, carefully placed so it faced inward toward the door, ... Some deliveries were caught on residents’ doorbell cameras — and that’s where things got truly bizarre.

The givers had TVs instead of faces.
...

“We determined there was no credible threat to residents and that this was strictly an inconvenience,” Pecka said. “It was” — (long pause) — “unique.”

Apparently, this has happened before.

Quote
It’s not the first time this has happened. There was a similar TV delivery last year in Glen Allen, in the Grey Oaks neighborhood in Henrico County. The TVs appeared around the same time of year — in late August — but there were fewer of them, Pecka said.

CBS 6 News reported that about 20 TVs were left on Glen Allen porches on Aug. 23 last year. Henrico police looked into the unexpected gifts, according to CBS 6, but never identified the giver — and, unlike in the Hampshire neighborhood, there appeared to be no video footage.

No. They are ski tracks. That's the sort of surface you get at the end of a fast run before people turn off and after the slope levels out. Nicknack and Mark have it right!

Edited to add: If you look at the 'horizontal image' in particular, you can see either the remnants of tyre tracks or of boot prints in the picture. Look towards the bottom left corner.

If it is the Aiguille d' Argentière, then they are unlikely to be ski tracks. Boot prints aren't unknown on snow slopes and the photographer was above Woerth.

Charlet states that the slope was forty five degrees. This matches the route description for the top of one route on that mountain. Hoever, even if the photograph was taken near the top, the camera angle grossly exaggerates the angle of the slope.

A possible clue is the strap apparently dangling from the left of his rucsack; if it's hanging free, the the slope is a lot less than it appears to be in the picture.

Nasa is reported to be investigating a claim that an astronaut accessed the bank account of her estranged spouse from the International Space Station, in what may be the first allegation of a crime committed in space.

Her estranged spouse, Summer Worden, reportedly filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Surely this tale of death by miss-adventure is peak France, n'est ce pas?

Quote
Having a cardiac arrest during sex on a business trip can be considered a "workplace accident", Paris Court of Appeal has ruled.

The ruling came about after a Frenchman, who was a safety technician, went on a business trip in northwest France and died while having sex with an unknown woman.

His employer, construction specialists TSO, argued that because the incident happened after his working hours and because he died in a room different than the hotel room reserved for him, it should not be held liable for the death, said the court statement seen by Euronews.

A pregnant woman baked a cake once, and it got completely out of hand.  I assume it appeals to people's sense of heteronormativity, or something.  I dunno, if I had a baby, I'd be trying not to reveal its sex, so I completely fail to grok.

That the USAnians use it as an excuse to shoot at things is the least baffling bit.

They also get a lot of grief from the First Nations, who not unreasonably point out that they were there well before the French.

At Shrewsbury Festival, a French-Canadian band mocked the celebration of so many centuries of Canada on the basis of how long Montreal has been there. From the audience:

"You not heard of Newfoundland, then?"

Similar note: The Chair were playing during Indyref, and some topless wanker in a kilt decided to wave a huge saltire flag in the mosh pit, blocking views of the stage. The Chair, a damned good band, unrolled a huge flag of their own. An Orkney one. There were also a few comments from them re not being 'Scoatish'.

Quebec has some weird arrangement re language to 'prevent the dilution' of Québécois culture, so if you want to live in Quebec, they effectively get a veto over your Canadian citizenship if you're not Frenchified enough for them despite the fact that you don't have to speak French to live in Quebec if you're Canadian. I'm not sure why you simply can't immigrate to Ontario and then sneak over the border when they're not looking.

You haven't met the Staff Occifers I work with. Every day is an object lesson in the vast gulf between the dictionary definition of "intelligence" and the Army definition.

A Florida dog put a car into reverse and drove it in circles for nearly an hour.

That's a bit unfair on the dog.  Unattended cars slipping into reverse and going round in circles is a fine American motoring tradition, on account of them having failed to discover clutches or handbrakes.

This is the dog equivalent of that thing you did at primary school where you stood on one spot and whirled round till you fell over. There's bound to be a Far Side cartoon about it.
