Title: Calling all darksiders - World Championships Aug 16-17 2008
Post by: Tiger on July 28, 2008, 09:53:07 am
Can't see a thread on this.
I am sure there are others here who know much more about it but a great weekend looms.
17-17 Aug @ Bentwaters in Suffolk. The fastest most extreme dark side rides and riders doing their utmost.  Great kit and awesopme speeds. Races and also some social rides in the surrounding gentle countryside. Racing fairly serious and pre-registered.

Camping, BBQ's etc.

About a hundred or more are expected I understand via BHPC site.

Should be a fun weekend.

More information here (http://www.wc2008.org.uk/).

Race registration and camping pitch bookings can be made with payment via Paypal here (http://shop.bhpc.org.uk/store/category_138.html). But hurry!

Racing will be on Sat/Sun 16/17th August; there will be two touring rides (one of ~25 miles, one of ~55 miles) on each of the following three days. Pleasant, rolling countryside with plenty of interesting things to see within cycling distance. Excellent weather booked  8)

Mens' and womens' world champions will be in attendance, as will most of their close rivals, including all the fastest UK racers. But you don't have to be a contender to have fun taking part! And you'll be representing your country in an international event, whatever speed you go at :)

I shall be there...  ;D

Although I have yet to get around to booking a camp site, which I will probably regret...

Hmmm, want to go but it's 6+ hours on the train, so needs 2 days off work, which I can't afford...
I'd like the BHPC to hold events within 180 miles of me, given that I live in the 2nd largest conurbation in Britain.  As it is, I can'y really make anything they do without significant sacrifice...

Glasgow?

Our Lancaster/Preston weekend was 2hrs 21 mins away from you by train. We had members from Penzance and Jersey there.

Oops, I'd forgotten that the fast train line stops in Lancaster  :-[
That'd be quite fun if I can book a 'bent bike on to a Virgin train

I've had no trouble putting mine on the Virgin trains, It just goes on as a normal bike reservation.
Wheeled it up to the window and got a ticket for it.

No 67 has a rather large chainring!  The wheels don't look that small (20"? bigger?), so I assume it can hammer around at a fair old rate of knots.

Nice shots.

What is it about that Mike Burrows shot that makes me think of Edwardian England?

I can mock. He did significantly better than me!  :)

Poor best?!?  I'd like to be able to do that badly!!  & whilst she might have a good camera, Becky, I find it's the numpty behind the lens that's the limiting factor with my photography  :-[

That's a NoCom, isn't it?  The only bike I've ever really lusted after that would be utterly impractical...  At least I have the same shoes as him, maybe I can work up to having the same bike...

I'm on honeymoon in Paris in a few weeks & need to check out if Pulsar Cycles have a demonstration model they'd let me play on.

Why is Sandro's aero so tall?

Fascinating photos.  I wish they were held a bit closer, but perhaps I will just have to make the effort next time.  I don't think I could get the Frankenbent on the train, though!

Why is Sandro's aero so tall?

It's ancient ;D  The fairing design has been around since 1983.  In those days it was firmly believed that any attempt to ride inna-laid-back-stylee on two wheels with a seat lower than about 40 cm was a sure-fire way to end up on one's head.  The bike inside appears to be a boggo Lightning P38, which has a seat height of about 45 cm and a minimum seat angle of 50 degrees, so it was always going to be tall.

An X2 with Carl Sundquist powering it did 64.2 mph at Palmdale, CA in 1986, which is why when the IHPVA followed the UCI's definition of "low-altitude" as being below 700 m, the only dissenting voice was that of Lightning Head Honcho Tim Brummer, who wanted 800 instead.  The Palmdale course was about 760 m above sea level...  A pity no-one's taken one to Battle Mountain.

Hurrah for Mr Larrington's pictures, especially since he knows everyone's names.  It looks like Sunday turned into something nice.  Sadly, we had to leave to get back to work, and missed most of Sunday, apart from the rain.

Sunday morning it tipped down the very second I had parked my motorcar, which is why there are no pictures of the TT, but it cleared up by lunchtime.  It looked as though Sandro Bollina was out there for at least an hour and a half - I reckon that he couldn't see people telling him he'd finished.

Anyway, results are on the NVHPV1's site at here: Clicky (http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/evenement.php3?id1=1947).

1 - coz we used their timing system
