Title: The Horsepower 200 & 100km Saturday 9th March 2019
Post by: Tomsk on January 29, 2019, 08:24:22 pm
This year's editions of the 200 & 100km Horsepower Audaxes are revving up ...

100km Brevet Populaire checked today and amended route sheet plus info onto the AUK website. I have added a new alternative [advisory] route back from Great Sampford via Bardfield - a quieter and prettier route than the B184 from Thaxted, which remains the official 'gritted' route in case of freezing conditions. There is still the laney route option from Thaxted, possible to use both ways if free from ice, but rather pot holed in places. Both alternatives add about 1.2km.

The 200 will certainly be advised of the new route, as it's a better way to Dunmow for full-value riders in the dark. Cafe at Snetterton is up to speed as well - we'll be doing a Helpers' Ride on Saturday 2nd March, if anyone else would like to ride then and help on 9th. If previous editions are anything to go by, then we'll be having a coffee and cake stop in Lavenham, the village shop or maybe the chippy in East Harling and then an afternoon second lunch binge at Wetherspoons in Newmarket. Finish at the Angel and Harp in Churchend.

There will be the first deployment of our ACME PBP Qualifier Stickers!

This is coming round quite quickly.   My longest road ride this year, so far, is 40 miles.

5 weeks, eh ?

Ta! I'll sample opinions nearer to 2nd March as to a starting time for the Helpers' Ride - last time, a late start to accommodate F & BHOOT, train assisted, I think.

9th March is a motorbike trackday at Snetterton this year

For the Helpers' Ride on Saturday 2nd, it's a car novice trackday, so Tyrrell's Restaurant will be open for our lunch stop  Helpers get treated by the organiser  :-* The bar is normally shut for trackdays, so it'll have to be the Golden Lion ['spoons] in Newmarket for our pub stop [pint, apple crumble n'custard for me ]

23rd Feb is a 'No Limits' trackday - ie not an MSV [circuit's owner] one. No Limits website says catering available - that's all, so short of phoning the catering manager, I'd reckon you'll be ok - might just be a burger van though!

If there's an event on there'll be someone in the main office, as well as the trackside HQ. They do have a rather nice rubber stamp, I seem to recall! Selfie by the gates will do as p-o-p.

Whenever I've been to Snetterton for a trackday the café/restaurant has always been open, both for MSV and private trackdays. I'd be very surprised if it was closed.

The only time I've been there it was v shut indeed.

Tom - might be able to do the helpers ride, will check with SWMBO (although I've already entered the main event - would that cover a helper's brevet?).

Yes, ta! I hope we'll have lots of helpers for the actual event - it's gonna be busy, what with folks qualifying for that French Ride ... I have two controllers for Lavenham [1st control] lined up, but extra help at start and finish will be needed - even if breakfast helpers go on to ride. Offspring stamping cards at Snetterton as per usual, is the plan.

^ Cheers tippers! We've four controllers out at Lavenham and Snetterton, and with you that's another four helpers at the start - should be about right. We'll need someone on standby for Snetterton, as Soupy isn't sure of his commitments on 9th yet.

Entries around the 120 mark at present, so there'll be two starts 15 minutes apart ... tbc.

You can put me down as a potential Snetterton standby, especially if the forecast is good ;-)

EDIT: You can put me down as a definite standby for Snetterton. It's a nice easy motorised run up there from Colchester so happy to go if needed.

Happy to assist on the day at Snetterton, travelling by tin box, don't care about the weather - fits in with visiting family in Dereham and Watton.

I've sorted my ECE route and submitted it to extend the 100k HP.  I'm riding it on Sunday 24th so I can get my February RRtY tick and 24th consecutive month of randonneuring....just have to let the RRtY Secretary know to count it in Feb and not March when it comes around to validations....think he'll be okay with it as long as I buy him a pint!
There is a plan afoot to be back at the Angel and Harp for a Sunday lunchtime-ish refreshment before continuing with the final 60km of the day.

Will be available for helping duties on the 9th

It was a near-perfect spring day for cycling yesterday — in winter! — and I had a terrific day out riding the first route-check of the 200

Usual long-winded write-up with a few pictures here — you'll have to read the prose to get a couple of the photos — https://www.strava.com/activities/2172188637 (https://www.strava.com/activities/2172188637)

Nothing much to report — a couple of notes for Tomsk to consider next week when the second route-check takes place and a slight tweak to the GPX.

"New" — not exactly.  "New to me" — yes.

An eBay-special 1987 Claud Butler with 27" wheels and delivered as a box of bits for the princely sum of £32, which I then built up into a 700c fixie-conversion with bits from the shed and several visits to Bicycle Ambulance for a rummage through theirs

I have a French frame in the shed, another eBay special, awaiting the same treatment for PBP  :)

I'll say it now so it's out there.....I'm more than happy to be dropped and make my own way round and hopefully catch up at food and watering stops. I suspect I am going to be painfully slow for all you folk with lots of miles in the legs.

I remember riding this, several years ago when the model shop was still open, and you all dropped me after the turn and back into a headwind.  I did catch you all up, as you, Tippers, were having to fix a double-puncture with hands in gloves in bitter cold and driven sleet (https://www.16inchwheels.uk/2015/01/31/horses-for-courses-200-perm/) — I passed that particular grass verge and smiled as I did at the memory, given that it was +13°C at the time  :P ;D

What we at for the total GPX distance now on the actual event? I have another silly ECE idea taking shape but would like to take advantage of any overdist, I think I made it 208 from your ridden track?

206 if you ride the Thaxted+B184 return.  208 if you ride the Gt Bardfield return.

Ah yes - I forgot about the options on return plus other sheltered (but a bit longer) routes.  I'll probably can the crazy idea of a 300 and just stick to the job at hand of the route check! :)

I am currently enjoying the inverse of a helpers’ ride sacrifice to the weather gods. Mr Garmin states that it’s 24C in the Newmarket Golden Lion pub garden, it is very sunny.  Must do this midweek daytime riding more often!!
(The group helpers’ ride looks like it will be doing the proper sacrifial offering on Saturday.)

 7:30 from my house. Get here early for tea and toast. There will be the opportunity to use our new cycle-parking in the front garden, though I'm not sure 7 bikes will all fit in!

I hadn't clocked the wind situation. So it's forecast to get stronger through the day on Saturday, and as a south westerly that's not the best scenario!

I had to abort a ride this morning due to tyre deflation issues. There's a small slit in the sidewall that I think is the cause, and the tyre is now flat again. I'm hoping a replacement tyre will arrive tomorrow and all will be fine, otherwise I'll be on a more dependable bike.

See you around 7:00 tomorrow at Toms, Garmin #1 has the GPS files on it. On the winter rigged track fixed machine - see if it is suitable for the arrow (no bottle cages, but with saddle bag).

Expecting some rain and a lot of wind - at least the rain should blow through fairly quickly!

Just met up with route checkers on the helpers ride Tomsk, KFC, Tippers, Jibers, Josser and Psyclist at the Chilli and Chives in Lavenham, who must lunching at the Snertterton circuit by now. Conversation progressed as to whom who had missed their turn on the front, and who will be doing the donkey work when they face the head wind. Sensibly I turned right at Great Green and pootled back home. I'm conserving my energy for the official Horsepower event next weekend.

(Ride strategy and confessions of a straggler: rather tuck in than muck in, why graft when you can draft, more shirker than worker, its all about hanging on than banging on).

G’day Strangler, good to see you briefly yesterday. You missed out on some killer headwinds back from snetterton - good for the soul...!

Thanks for letting me tag along yesterday Tomsk, good ride in great company and the perfect way to complete my first RRtY. Hope it all goes well next Saturday, will be sending positive weather vibes from Switzerland!

Many congrats on your maiden RRTYJosser - but you will need to do 4 on the bounce to keep up with Greysheep.

Easy life for some skiing in Switzerland next week, it's going to be downhill all the waaayyyyy......enjoy.

 Thanks jiberjaber - entries still rolling in ...

Despite knowing we were returning into the wind, we still look cheerful! I was quite impressed by our average speed for the whole ride though, so it didn't drop off that much on the way back.

A similar strong-ish west-south-westerly awaits on Saturday, if the forecast is to be believed.

Weather is looking good for everybody tomorrow. Dry, not too cold, but perhaps a little blowy. Forecast to be a westerly, which will make the Snetterton to Newmarket stretch a little slow for those on the 200.

Just to re-iterate morning timings: SMC open from 19:30 this evening to set up and welcome the pyjama party. Over to the Angel and Harp at some point.

06:00 sleeps wake and prep for breakfast from about 06:30.

After 07:30 and 09:00 starts, clearing up, collect the bread order, controllers leave for Lavenham and Snetterton, remaining helpers ride out for an elevenses treat at the Blue Egg, back for 100km opening at 12:24.

i will be at SMC for approx 06:00 to assist with the launch activities, then heading over to Snetterton to meet the 200K riders with an ACME stamp, before sending them off into the not so gentle breeze.
I'm heading off into deepest darkest Norfolk from Snetterton so no engine assisted option back to Dunmow from me.
Good luck to all of the riders this weekend, a bit of team work on the way back will help.

I’ll go first then.

From 07:20 we were set off in waves a few minutes apart. I was eager to get started so positioned myself to ensure I was in the first wave.

This ride was quite good as each stage was roughly 50km, so could divide it up that there would be roughly four 2-3 hours rides. The first control was Lavenham, the wind was with me and it felt like I was flying, which was just as well as I took a wrong turn and had to backtrack a bit to get back on to the route. It didn’t really matter though as I got to the control and Nick stamped my card.

Whilst there I met Jan, Andy and Chris. We would spend the rest of the ride cycling together. The next control was at Snetterton Race circuit. The wind was with us for the most part however as we approached the circuit we cycled through a storm. The rain came down quick, heavy and cold. Worst of all though the wind was blowing it at speed sideways like daggers hitting my face. Luckily though we could see blue skies in the distance so just had to suffer through it. However worse than the rain was the wind as soon as we entered the circuit. It gust strong and hard like a smack in the face, it also didn’t help that by now I was starving and in need of decent meal. There was nothing to do but spin and try and move forwards to the restaurant.

The next stage to Newmarket would prove to be toughest, we were changing direction now, going into the wind. To make things easier we decided to each spend 5 minutes on the front, taking it in turns to suffer the brunt of the wind. By the time we reached Newmarket the wind had died down a bit but then we had the rolling hills to contend with. Those 50km took us nearly four hours and the Wetherspoons we controlled at was never more inviting. A quick meal and then on to the last 50km back to Dunmow.

The worst of the wind was now behind us and towards the end I think we had a tail wind! We took the main and fast road back which may have been a mistake as there were some questionable overtaking manoeuvres by the Essex motorists! Thankfully though we all made it back safely to the Arrivee just after 19:00hrs.

So that’s the first PBP qualifier done and ride 4 of my RRTY.

Many thanks to Tom and all the ACME team for organising.

A game of two half’s!  On top for the first half, in full control and moving really well.  All felt comfortable, started to get a wee bit less comfortable just before half time. Second half lost the pace considerably, struggled to keep moving forwards at times, was hanging on a bit for a while.  About half way through this half things started to pick up a bit, got back into control, but at a slower pace that earlier in the game.  Was pleased with the end result and overall was tested but happy.

A huge ‘well done’ to Tom and all volunteers, made the game both possible and enjoyable.  One down...... more to come.

Set off quite briskly, enjoying the tailwind, at times on my own and others in small groups.  I had a fairy visit about 5 miles short of Snetterton.  Rear wheel, naturally.   Despite this I was still at the turn in 3h30.

I borrowed the track pump to top my tyre up but accidentally unscrewed the valve core, causing a complete deflation.   Tyre pumped back up I set off into the increasing headwind.  Somewhere just after Honington the rear went flat again.  With a bit of swearing I used my last tube up and then rode to Newmarket.  I detoured off to Halfords to pick up another couple of tubes.  Guy behind the counter asked if I was having a good day.  Given I was pretty tetchy by this point his timing was not great.

From here the run back was easier with the wind from the side so progress was decent.  I got in in 9hrs which was an hour slower than last year which had much more benign conditions.

I did, for some reason, cock up my fuelling, especially hydration and I was quite wobbly at the HQ.  A bit of TLC, a couple of cheese rolls and a load of squash sorted me out before the drive home.

Thanks to all the ACME crew for looking after us all.

Any more encounter with the 'Pothole of Doom'? I've narrowed it down to Norwich Lane, between Knettishall and Sapiston. This is very much the flinty, potholed, stamping ground of 'She Who Must Not Be Named' - Tippers had his double 'visitation' a few years ago on a snowy perm/helpers' ride [not sure which]: famously repaired with gloves kept on [while we all watched, gave 'helpful' advice, and shivered]!

That's two bikes written off there yesterday - classic front end impacts - wobbly front wheel, forks ok but top and down tubes bent/fractured downwards. Injuries, but thankfully non requiring 'blue lamps'. PM/email me if you need to report an accident, please.

I believe there is a statutory requirement to fill potholes above a particular size, once notified. The threshold size is defined by the county but recorded crashes should bump up the repair priority. If a pothole has been notified prior to crashes, I think the county has increased liability.

Struggling into the wind with a number of riders and stopped to change batteries on the Garmin, a short while later I turned a corner to see Peter lying muddied in the road with another rider. He looked shaken, with signs of grazing and bruising to the side of his face, not good.

Five or so minutes later with help he stood up and retrieved his bicycle, and attempted to sort out his brake shifter. Chatted with two other guys repairing punctures just up the road who had also ridden through the hole.

Peter by this stage had remounted his bike and appeared gingerly to be back on his way with two or three others.

Continued assuming all was well.

The water filled pothole was on the lefthand edge of the road, approximately four inches deep 20 or so yards from the cellphone mast

Yes, the ride with icy road edges on the A/B road first section, a slight thaw then horizontal snow showers and the Russian tank outside the old Snetterton model shop looking appropriately 'Eastern Front'! Tipper's Verge is engraved in Audax Legend!

Well, I've never been blown off the road before, so that was a new one: somewhere near Troston a mighty gust just cuffed me onto the verge. A passing motorist stopped to see if I was okay (young children in baby seats waving at me), but the only damage was to my dignity.

A pretty ride and lovely route - but the blowy conditions made the second half quite testing. Good PBP training as the forecast* is for a tropical storm then. Thanks to Tom and the ACME team for running another excellent event.

The most noticable after-effect of this ride has been wrist pain - presumably from the rictus grip I had on the tandem's bars as I wrestled it through the worst of the broadside gusts. That drag up past Cavenham was a soul-destroyer and no mistake.

No takers for the tandem tow in the last section; Tom's rides are all about the Essex chop, which makes riding with us pretty much untenable; you can get off and walk faster than we climb anything steeper than 8%.

Well, after checking out how little riding I've been doing because of real life, this was my first 200km+ since Hereward the Wake in July 2017! After a previous enjoyable experience on this ride thought it would be a gentle reintroduction to the world of audax. How wrong I was.
First half of the ride was a most enjoyable pootle after hooking up with Andy and Jan at the start, thinking to myself "yeah I've still got it!" About 15km out of Snetterton the wind whipped up and we were hit with a horizontal downpour. Crawled up to Snetterton from there and I had to walk the last 200 yards to the café as couldn't actually stay upright because of the wind.
A good refuel and sit down prepared me for what I remembered was a most pleasant push to Newmarket. On my way with Andy, Jan and joined by Deano44 we pressed on. What a slog! Taking it in turns at the front we battled on. I became more weary as the ride went on and was cut adrift to suffer on my own at the back. Had to stop for 'a moment' at one point to get my breath back shake my legs out, Andy informed me we were only half way to Newmarket. In the words of Bill Bryson "Are you shitting me!?!?!"
After an eternity we made it to Spoons in Newmarket and curry was consumed post haste before heading on. More of the same on the way back but the pace picked up a bit. Being the gentlemen they are the other 3 stopped a few times to wait for me on the last leg and am eternally grateful for being looked after. Made it back in 11.5 hours so not a bad start to my distance rebirth. Big thanks also to Andy who saved me from having to cycle the 25k home at the end as well. If it wasn't for him I may still be out there now.
The pain has subsided now and am ready to do it all again......

83 validated 200km brevets, 7 of which are helpers'. 9 DNFs. Uploaded to AUKweb, with brevets to go off for physical validation towards the end of the month.

Rob B's inner tube and prk receipt from Newmarket Halfords spoke volumes; some of you opted for a Wetherspoons feast, but a lot did the Shell/BP garage thing for a fast passage.

46 100km finishers, including 1 helper. 4 DNFs.

Well done to all finishers, commiserations to the DNFs and their various woes. Thanks again to all our helpers for stamping cards, feeding and caring for riders, and generally being excellent.

Bloke said ‘are you having a nice day ?’ - I showed him my filthy hands and gave him a withering look.   He then asked if he could e-mail me the receipt.   At which point I remembered that I needed a Newmarket receipt.   Could have been a mistake.
