Title: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on July 20, 2009, 02:51:17 pm
I had the time on holiday to take pictures of some bugs. Don't know what they are..

love number 2!!

It took a lot of work to get to that point.. Ended up using my hand to shade the flash so there wasn't too much hitting the top of the grass. Manual balance against the sunset.  Flash on a remote lead, camera handheld, grass blowing in the wind.

Not your average snapshot.

The top ones look very much like the larvae of the second ones. Cinnabar(sp?) moths.

Pretty certain you're right. They feed on ragwort.

I'm pretty sure the moths are 6-spot burnet moths ...

Very nice pictures.

Actually I think you are probably correct. The Cinnabar moth has more red on it I think.

The bottom one (on the ground) looks like a mullein moth caterpillar.  Handsome fellas, but they make a real mess of the plant they live on.  We had mulleins in Lambourn.

The top photo is of Cinnabar moth caterpillars on their larval food plant, Ragwort (a tactic to prevent predators eating the caterpillars).

The second photo is of a 6-spot burnet moth (day-flying moth) and the third is a mullein moth caterpillar.

Lovely, lovely invertebrates all of them

:o  Ummm - shutter speed?? Amazing!

Camera - Canon 20D
Lens - Tamron 180mm Macro

Bee 1/500 f/8.0
Hoverfly on pink flower 1/1250 f/9.0
Hoverfly on purple flower 1/1250 f/9.0
Hoverfly in flight 1/3200 f/14

All cropped to a lesser or greater degree, gimp used to remove spots caused by bits of the Sahara being stuck on the sensor.

I needed a fast shutter speed because the critters (and their wings) don't stay still for long (and my arm was aching and shaking trying to hold a heavy lens), but on the other hand I needed a small aperture because you need all the depth of field you can muster. So I had to use the fastest ISO available (3200), with consequent loss of quality.

A tripod wouldn't have been much good because by the time it was positioned framed and focused I would end up with pictures of empty leaves. A monopod and/or right-angled viewfinder (http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk/prod.asp?i=2730&1=Canon+Angle+Finder+C) might have been useful. I left them at home. D'oh!

I'm saving up for a decent ringflash, which will mean tiny aperture for max DoF and short flash duration to freeze movement.

Your 20D high iso performance is much better than the D80.

I used either an SB800 on a lead (typically TTL mode) or, for the stripy things, an SB800 triggered by a radio slave and a SB24 triggered by an optical slave. f22 or 25.

The high ISO performance of cameras took a quantum leap about 3 years ago, jsut when I bought the D80 which seems to be the last of that earlier era.

I'd also like a longer macro lens to get pics from further away.

They get quite a decent size those devil's coach horse beetles.

When they feel threatened, they'll usually raise their tail up mimicking a scorpion; they will also emit a foul smelling odour.

A little chap I found going for the last of the blackberries.

I think it's a shield bug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_bug).

I spent the last two days playing with a macro lens, but none of my shots are remotely as good as Salvatore's or David's.  :'( Though admittedly I'm not yet halfway through the camera manual, and I've not had a chance to look at the instructions which came with the lens.  :-[

Hints and tips for shooting erratic fast-moving teeny-tiny things gratefully appreciated.*  :)

*Though I haven't got as far as "aperture" or "depth of field" in the manual yet.  ::-)
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on April 25, 2011, 11:57:32 pm
Manual focus and exposure.
Off camera flash
Set up and wait for the action to come to you. (ie you see a bee moving aroudn the flowers, pick a flower and prefocus so you are ready and waiting.

Throw 99.9% of the shots away.
Then throw the other 0.1% away and practise some more.

Ta.  :)

Don't have an off-camera flash.  :(

How do I make the whole insect be in focus? I was finding that I was getting the head in focus and the body blurry, or vice-versa, and I don't know what words to look up in the instructions.
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on April 26, 2011, 12:08:38 am
aperture. set it to the smallest (biggest number) and you will have more in focus.

You will however lose shutter speed so wil need a flash.

If you have a sheet of greaeproof paper (and some sticky tape) you can approximate a small softbox in front of your flash which will improve the lighting. Just make a loop from an A4 sized piece. Another bit of white card the other side of the lens will help bounce some light into the shadows. And with your 3rd pair of hands...
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: rogerzilla on April 26, 2011, 09:06:16 pm
At these distances depth of field is almost non-existent, even at f/22.  This means focus has to be spot on. Bumblebees ought to be easy though - they are very placid and you can even stroke them while they're crawling on flowers.

The old trick is not to actually focus at all; pre-focus closely on manual and just move the camera until the insect is sharp.  Much easier.

Well, here are my very first attempts (the ones I didn't delete outright! :-[ ). None of them are great. They were all taken outside without flash ('cos I don't have a flash yet :'( ), and I'm a bit annoyed that I forgot to set my ISO setting back to normal after I had been experimenting with forcing it to be too high. I'm no-where near the standard of the rest of this thread, but I'll keep trying.  :)

Loaded with pollen.

As I was getting in close, I kept hearing what I thought was angry buzzing from a neighbouring bush. It turned out to be my model. As it started to gather the pollen/ nectar it folded its wings tight on its back like in Pingus image and the wings shimmered and buzzed quite sharply for a second. I think it is Bumble Bee ecstasy at finding stuff ;D

When photographing melanic harlequin ladybirds, care must be taken to avoid one's reflection:

So instead, here's a proper native seven-spot, nomming away on aphids:

It was pretty difficult deciding which bits to try to get in focus, particularly as they kept moving and I was using a rather cumbersome old manual lens.  There were many other shots that I discarded.  The fourth one was a beautiful blue of some variety but it never came to rest with its wings down.

It's 'that' time of year again, so out come the spiders. Giving myself huge points, seeing as how I'd set the camera on Macro, hand-held, and it was actually about 50mm away from the spider, with me wobbling, him shaking in the breeze.

You could well be right. There was no chance of motion blur. There were lots of them about (in the New Forest) and I may have unknowingly trodden on one or two, but I did flip one over which I had spotted on its back with its legs in the air.

And now for something completely different. One of the pubs by the University has been remodelled in honour of the naturalist (and former professor of biology) D'Arcy Thompson.

Waiter, there's a beer on my bug - the tables have been etched/printed with his original specimen drawings.

Just keeping the thread ticking on.. Might be time for a collection from the first year field trip to Tentsmuir. Pictures taken with a 55mm Micro Nikkor and rather a lot of extension tube.  or a 135/2.8 Nikkor (again with much extension). The square grid is at 5mm spacing. I'd have liked to do dark field illumination but don't have an etched glass scale.

I spotted this in an abandoned quarry in The Lakes.  It is only about 2 inches deep and was empty.  This was in early May.  Is it an abandoned wasps' nest, unfinished, or the nest of a much smaller insect?

(http://www.zen177395.zen.co.uk/Wasp's nest.JPG)

A week or two later, back at home, I saw this mayfly which had just emerged from its previous "shell".  I understand it is the only insect which does this at this stage in its life, so was pretty pleased to see the two together, given the short life of the fully metamorphosed fly.

Not exactly a bug but on the same sort of scale. This is in a plastic storage box that had a bit of earth in then was left in the garden and collected some rainwater. A few days later we see this.
Looks like an earthworm and has been happily swimming about for a few days. Now the middle of it has erupted with loads of wriggly things. Is it reproducing or what?

Good find though, they're pretty big aren't they!
I got a bit excited then, I thought the invasion had started and they were going to be all over the country.

Should've known it wasn't England, it looks sunny on the photos ;D

It was mahoosive -  a very impressive insect. We thought it was a beetle to begin with, but after I thought it was more waspy, beeish in shape.

We met lots of those big black bee chaps in the Ardeche this summer, but I couldn't get them to pause to have their photo taken.

I did meet this chap though who posed nicely on a greenhouse.  Hugest hopper I ever did see.

Cockchafer. Harmless enough. Bimble around in the sky, bumping into windows and entangling themselves unwittingly in womans' hair.

The preferred food for adults is oak leaves, but they will also feed on conifer needles.

Uh-oh! We have a small town garden and, admittedly, hadn't been keeping an eye on things 'wasp-wise', but just at the weekend we were enjoying the late evening sun, with a glass of wine, and thought "Hhmm, seems to be a lot of Wasp traffic in and out of the Virginia Creeper." Well, as you can see below, they've built a home, which is quite entrenched and currently the size of a football. I'm leaving well alone until (hopefully) the've all died or cleared off by the late Autumn.

I can confirm that trying to focus a macro lens handheld is somewhat challenging.

Unfortunately our moth expert was rather too keen to get  them into glass tubes making photos challenging.
