Sadly, I'm working this Weds. eve and will be pretty much every Weds. eve until Christmas.

I might be able to put in the odd train-assisted appearance.

Where do you have in mind, OD?
Oh, Bach without any doubt. Bach every time for me.

I could be up for this. What have you got in mind then?

Its my classic north and south of the A12 route:

Witham, Ranks Green, Paulk Hall Lane and ford, Terling, Paper Mill Lock, Tofts Chase, nearly to Maldon via The Cats, back thru the Oakden swimming pool, Hatfield Pevvy and home.

Not sure, I'll need to check domestic arrangements with The Boss.  I am thinking 6:30 ish at the latest but leave it with me for a mo.

Right then, assuming my idea is universally accepted I can be ready for the road by 6:30.  However, I'm more than happy to go with any other ideas there might be knocking about.

It looks like I'll never be able to make one of these after a full day at work. :(

Fortunately I still have quite a bit of holiday time left so should be able to pick a Wednesday afternoon that I can take off. :)

Just not any time this month.  :(

I can vouch for that ... a custard-coloured dot, rapidly receding up North Hill was all that I saw last time round ;-)

Anyone up for a ride on Wednesday?  I have a nice 36 mile route in mind with ford (swimming) and pub opportunities.  Or, I'm more than happy to follow someone else's back wheel.

I'm in, although I'm going over the footbridge at the Nounsley ford.

So which pub, (or pubs) do you propose visiting?

From memory, on or near that route (assuming we're not starting in any of the Witham pubs!) there are at least...

Square and Compasses (Fuller St, off route nr Ranks Green)
Queen Annes Castle (Gt Leighs, off route nr Paulk Hall Lane)
Rileys, Terling
The Rodney Little Baddow (off route, slightly further up North Hill than Tofts Chase)
The Generals Arms (off route, all the way up North hill)
A couple at Woodham Walter (The Victoria?) (slightl off route, depending on your
The aforementioned Cats
The Sportsman, Nounsley (very slightly off-route, near to nutty's slimed bottom)
The Cross Keys at Hat. Pev/Nounsley

This is all based on guessing the details of your route, but can't be far off.

I'm happy with any of the above or any other that I haven't remembered/don't know about.

My leaning would be towards the Cats, just because I've been past so many times and never been in, but I'm happy anywhere with beer. :)

I think that "via The Cats" is a bit of a clue.
Roughly here, Clicky, IIRC.

Indeed ;)

It's the secret sixth pub on a 5-pub route I made a couple of years back and used to do as a training circuit.  I never did do it as a pub crawl  :( (at least not yet!).

I was just clarifying with OD on the basis of his earlier "pub opportunities" description ;)

chief is a possible for this ride again, but he won't be able to start with us in Witham at 18:30, so will try to catch us up later wherever we stop, "The Cats", presumably  :D

Morning chaps, The Cats is certainly on the agenda, assuming Wally has opened up, I'm sure he will.

When I was loading the route onto my GPS last night I realised that it also heads off to Wickham Bishops after swimming so perhaps we can make the Green Man at Little Braxted for last orders.

My mate Steve is also planning to join us.  He is a very able runner who I am attempting to convert to cycling.  Currently he has a mountain bike with road tyres but is keen to take part in this series of rides so I am sure we can persuade him to buy a road bike pretty quickly.

See you tonight, 6:30 at my garage door if that's OK with everyone.

I intend to join in on one of these rides sometime to sip my orange juice whilst you all booze, but I don't think tonight's the night (only got back from Germany yesterday). Mebbe next week, if it's on, and if I get myself organised somewhat.

My front light's a bit unimpressive. Do you lot have nice Audaxer Schmidt Dynohubs whose light I can share? Although I'm probably a bit of a slow rider anyway for y'all...

It would be good if you could join us some time.

My lights need upgrading too but Mr O has some sort of Death Star to show us the way.  Plus, the moonlight reflected off his head is quite useful.

Just practising ...

If anyone is coming via train to Witham who doesn't know the way to OD's garage door, I'm happy to swing by there and run a "feeder ride" ;-)  It's very close to being on my way there anyway.

Let me know either by this thread or by PM.  I may well swing past the station anyway, to look for any potentially lost yACFers.

Cheers,
Mark

Your garage at 6.30 it is then. I've not been in The Cats either, so I vote for that. Will we be going up Col Du Danbury? And what surprises will the Magic Bag hold in store this evening? ;)

My plan is not to take us up Col Du Danbury for the following reasons:

A. It's not as high as Mont Ventoux
B. It's the obvious choice and I like to be a bit different every now and then

The Magic Bag (which also went up Mont Ventoux) will contain dental floss, spare tyre etc as usual but will also contain inflatable versions of all the Girls Aloud ladies who will perform a medley of their greatest hits on Wally's bar.  After which they will perform lewd and inappropriate acts on all those wishing to partake.

Is The Cats going to be open? I've been there a couple of times of a Saturday lunch time, every other time I've been past it, it's been closed.

This is a concern.  The only phone number I have for them doesn't work and I have never been able to find a phone number that does work.  If Wally is shut we can always slip into Maldon if we're thirsty or come up with a plan C.

Great idea, we'll stand and watch you execute Plan C.  Please pass out our beers thru the broken window.

I take you'll be throwing your own bike.  If you want to throw mine you will have to remove the Magic Bag first or you won't be able to lift it.
