Split my rim
« on: 29 October, 2008, 04:24:53 pm »
Whilst out with the council this morning I glanced at my bike and noticed that the rim had failed.

Good thing I carry cable ties, and it was only 5 miles home  ;D ;D

Before you bin it, have you got a rim gauge to see how thin it had become?

I think too thin is the answer your looking for.  ;)

ah, that rim'd done intergalactic miles before you had it.

That wheel is almost 18 years old...

Hope you weren't too inconvenienced

Interesting that there's no back brake on that bike, and you've been riding it quite a bit.  So it's failed (I guess) gradually from being thin and having a fat tyre pushing it out, rather then through brake wear suddenly taking it to a point where it was too thin.

Anyway, I'd blame the bloke you got it off :)

edit: and why hasn't this gone NWS yet ?

Yes, I did blame the previous owner with lots of effort  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Funniest bit was the council chaps wanting to give me a lift (which was appreciated).  Instead of jumping at the chance I just chucked the cable ties on (the rim was sticking out at 90 degrees prior to that!) and said "I've ridden worse in the past "

2 minutes to find and attach cable ties, plus a slight worry at every bump I hit.  No problems ;D

Now, do I rebuild it, or shall I ride it to work tomorrow?

Oi!  Not the previous owner - the previous previous owner, if you don't mind! ;D
Getting there...

I like the way MV got  around the real problem with "and having a fat tyre pushing it out".  ;D

Kind of.  It did have that very fat tyre on it when it left my garage... :-[
