Charlotte it is a movie (a good one that is) so therefore it does not have to make sense :)

By Hollywood standards, it is damn weird.  For agreeing to it, John Malkovich went up in my estimation.  It needed someone with a relatively high profile to be effective. 

It's a pretty good movie - there are good characters, some really funny scenes and it's surprisingly touching at times.
