Does anybody know when to harvest pumpkins? Some of ours are as big as grapefuit!

That's bigger than our squashes! I have given up on the little green runty things. Warmer summer next year, please!

When the squashes worked, they stayed out until they'd grown a hard shell, and then came in and waited to be eaten. I think that you can harvest them as soon as they've turned the right colour if you're eating them straight away, and they should be in before there's a hard frost, but other than that they're flexible.

From what I remember, you push the stalk and if it starts to come away from the fruit then it is time to harvest.

Failing that, and a frost is threatening, harvest them and store on a sunny windowsill until you are ready to use them.

Our plants have done bugger all this year, can we nick some of yours? :)

When I saw the title of this thread I thought they'd released another Russ Meyer film, posthumously.

We grew a monster a few years ago.  A proper Hallowe'en sized fella :)

Unfortunately what we'd planted was courgettes...

We have had some big ones in years past. Not this year or last year though.

You want to harvest them as late as possible, just before they rot or the mice start eating them. Then store in the greenhouse, off the floor.

2 hrs to carve it last night, the problem with these big pumpkins is there is not much more flesh than half the size, last years was 53lbs and I filled two carrier bags, this filled two and a half carrier bags, it just had a much bigger cavity.
This was last years with my horror crew and all the swag we got.

I don't think you're allowed to get rid of your kids after Halloween.  They are for life - not just for Christmas Trick'n'Treating....
