First rider back was about 3 hours slower than last year.

And at 31:50, it was an hour quicker than I've ridden the BCM before. It was also the first time I had continued at Kings and cat napped my way through the night, a final 20 mins snooze in Knighton seemed to do the trick

Hopefully normal service will be resumed on the Cambrian 600

I thought the A44 was quite windy last Saturday, but it can't have been as
the windmills weren't turning. Does anyone know how hard the wind has to blow
before these machines kick into life?

They must have been stopped intentionally. They only need a breeze to turn them. 5 to 8mph according to Wiki.

If it's already windy then they don't need the wind farms to make any more wind.  Simple.

Turbines used in wind farms typically can't operate above a certain windspeed and are shut down.  Or they could have been undergoing maintenance, or could have lost their grid connection.  If they were new they may not have been commissioned yet.

The turbines are also put into a stall condition if the generators get too hot. Typically about a thrd of a wind farm will be stationary.

We could do with a few in Andover today, it's very muggy.

How much electricity do they consume?

...and if the automatic brake system on a turbine fails during strong winds, something like this happens...

It's hot, hot, hot here, and clear and still :)

a BCM600 this weekend would have been a different proposition

Funny you should say that.

I just got back from a DIY 600. It was brilliant - sunny, favourable winds, and general loveliness. I had so much time spare overnight (at 399km), it was almost a "normal" night.  If there's an easier way of earning 6 AUK points, I don't know of one.

HTH  ;D

I've just taken charge of a small green back-pack. Probably part of the bag drop from Dolgellau.

Inside are a pair of size 42 cycling shoes, a couple of changes of clothes & grooming kit.

Please, please, please. If anyone can lay claim to this - PM me, so arrangements can be made to re-patriate  your goodies.

All other bits forgotten by cyclists at the end of both the BC400 and BCM600 have been entered into the postal system - may their god be with them.

If there's been any posts on other forums (such as the AUK) could someone copy & post this, or PM me the postee's details please.
Thanking you all in anticipation.

I've just received validated brevet cards for the scenic and 2004 rides.

If anyone urgently needs their Brevet validation number for qualification purposes (such as BMB 2009), please PM me, otherwise your brevet cards will find their way back to you some time soon - depending on the tarriff you've attached to the envelope.

A postscript:

I spent Whitsun week in Beddgelert, in a 9-bedroom house just over the bridge in the village - not just me, I hasten to add.  For those of you, like me, who have only cycled the Caernarfon/Beddgelert road in darkness, and with somewhat dulled powers of perception, it is really a very beautiful stretch, going past a lake or two, alongside a narrow-guage railway, and with towering peaks to either side, none of which I was aware of the week before (OK I may have been vaguely aware of the railway).

I cycled back to Swansea, using mainly BCM and BC routes and can also confirm that
a) cutting the corner through Rhyd to Maentwrog may remove a km or two, but adds quite a number of verticle ms.  There were great views though, back over the Aberglaslyn estuary/valley
b) the Maentwrog/Trawsfynnydd climb may be a lot easier if you haven't already done 350+ km/have had some sleep in the preceding 22 hours, but it's still a bit boring
c) service at the Tre'r Ddol cafe is quicker when you're the only one in there and it's 9:30.

Well done to all who completed this event.  The sense of elation that I felt completing it in '07 was the highlight of a cycling filled year.

I thought that I was going to finish outside of time, so when I finished with 5 minutes to spare I screamed with delight.  Several phone conversations required a hurried explanation to bewildered counter parties.

It has taken me a couple of days to get through all the fabulous reports. Encore to that well done.

Hi Justin(e), great to hear from you. Are you posting from down under?

I was quite pleased to arrive at Chepstow myself, on two wheels for a change!

Well done Manotea.

In terms of arriving back at chepstow - it's a case of less is much, much more, and third time l***y.

No-one was happier to see you arrive under your own steam than blacksheep
