Does anyone else here like Seed Cake?
« on: 06 October, 2009, 04:20:29 pm »
I started thinking about Seed Cake recently (for no reason that I can fathom) and after several weeks of me blathering on about how lovely  seed cake is , the Tearoom  staff here at work relented and baked me one :) The tasting ceremony was a bit of a let down as only two out of six thought it was worth eating. Seemed to produce a Marmite reaction. Mmmm - time to try it out on the paying Tearoom customers and exactly the same result, could not even give it away to some regulars. Like or loathe it  & no inbetween. I just think the Caraway seeds add a real earthy taste. Anyone else here like Seed Cake?

I'm not sure I like the variation in texture.  In fact I really don't like bits of peel etc.  But I had a sublime seedcake once, which must have had ground caraway, as it was really smooth...

Makes me think of The Hobbit. I think Bilbo used to eat them.

You know - I was just wondering where I had heard of seed cake recently. Last night I started reading the first chapter of The Hobbit to my son (aged 7) and he asked me what seed cake was. Very strange co-incidence.

Yes to seedcake, which also gets a mention in Winnie-the-Pooh.

Quote
“Well,” said Owl, “the customary procedure in such cases is as follows.”

“What does Crustimoney Proseedcake mean?” said Pooh. “For I am a Bear of Very Little Brain, and long words Bother me.”

“It means the Thing to Do.”

“As long as it means that, I don’t mind,” said Pooh humbly.

Bilbo did eat them, and Balin requested them at the party that started the entire adventure. If hobbits and dwarfs like seed cake, who are we to complain?

Any cake sounds good to me, I would dearly love to try some.
Or any other sort of cake now I think about it.
Indeed this post has awakened a great yearning inside me that will not go away until it has been satisfied.

I like seed cake.  I even make it on occasion (my standard sponge recipe (4, 4, 4 and 2 eggs) can  be adapted to be chocolate, seed, apple etc.
(or reused as microwave 'steamed' sponge with marmalade etc.)

It gets mentioned in swallows and amazons too (no icba to find the quote, it's mentioned more than once.  I think on one occasion they fry it.
Any fool can admire a mountain.  It takes real discernment to appreciate the fens.
