new chains required (2)
« on: 17 January, 2010, 05:29:59 pm »
I need 2 new chains:

1. For my all-purpose bike, 8sp. Goes out in all weathers.

2. For a +1 "winter" bike, 9sp.

What does the panel recommend without spending a fortune?

I spent years riding Sedis (now SRAM???) chains. 8 speed PC830 are 7 notes from ChainReaction.

I am running KMC chains on the tandem and have been very impressed with their ability to take a pounding. Their 9 speed chains start from around 15 notes.

I still prefer SRAM for  bike with derailleur gears.

I buy 8 speed chain from ASDA. About £4 a go now.
For 9 speed, I go to the One Day Cycle Promotions and stock up.
SRAM gets my vote too but other makes are good. I avoid Shimano chains though.

So there's no need to spend more than £7 on a chain?

I wouldn't have thought so for an 8 speed chain.

I'm quite happy ith the Connex Wippermann 9-speed, which was the cheapest fully-plated 9-sp chain Wiggle had.

I don't think so, no.  I've been using different varieties of SRAM 8 speed chain for years and other than the plating on the links I can't tell the difference.

I agree, I am also using the SRAMS chain for years, at the moment PC830. I tied KMC, but it was a bit noisy and did not last very long.

The last KMC I tried broke - a side plate went. Not impressed.

SRAM for me, or shimano when on special.

I have always used KMC with no issues.

I've just fitted a Wipperman PC808.  The links work spectacularly well.  But when I tried to reconnect a link with the splitter, the sideplate came away. :-\

And, by Sunday morning, it had rust.

But it's a handsome chain and runs well now its oiled.

My 808s have lasted (and shifted) well. Being plated, they're probably more tolerant of all-weather commuting maintenance levels  :-[ .  On that basis, it's probably well worth the price of two rock-bottom budget SRAM or Shimano chains.
