White Spirit and plastic bottle compatibility
« on: 01 June, 2011, 03:13:14 pm »
I have a couple of jars of contaminated white spirit (post chain and paint brush cleaning duties). I want to get thsi stuff to the local recycling centre for disposal (it has household chemical disposal facilities) and woder if a plastic milk bottle is suitable? Would the spirit degrade the plastic or is the plastic one of those resistant to spirit?

Thanks,

If you leave the white spirit in a tall thin jar, like a coffee jar, the particles will settle out and you can reuse it. It works better with paint than oil though.

As for the milk bottle, I don't know the answer for sure,  but you would easily find out by testing with a small volume.

A two litre water bottle  full of similarly contaminated white spirit has been sitting in my shed for the last three years.
Yes to what hbunnet said - the contaminants do sink to the bottom, and PET (the plastic from which the bottle is made) is resistant to spirits.

Milk 'bottles' are high density polyethylene and might not fare so well.

Yes white spirit is ok in PET and PE - clear drinks bottle and milk bottles respectively. In fact it's sold in PET bottles sometimes.

You should be safe - I usually use an old 4 pint plastic milk bottle for chain cleaning with white spirit, and being a bit tight fisted do leave it to settle out so I can decant the clean(er) stuff off to reuse for next time.  The bottle hasn't disolved yet.

Yes, you can reuse WS many times for cleaning chains.  Ordinary jam jars will do.

Our milk bottles are made of glasss and deliverd by the milk man every morning. White spirit doesnt harm them :)
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Indeed, but how do you close them?
