To the Henge for Sunrise!
« on: 19 June, 2008, 05:12:48 pm »
My road club are riding from Didcot to t' 'Henge on Fri night.

Is anyone else involved with similar excursions? I've heard there is a Rapha ride from London (wherever that is ...)

This is the likely route:
Google Maps

Edit: Just seen this topic further down:
One more rider for a train assisted ride to Stonehenge from Clapham Jctn?

Anyone else daft enough to ride there?

Do they actually let you near Stonehenge on the solstice these days ? I was at the last but one Stonehenge Festival back in the 80s. I can vaguely remember being inside the circle at sunrise.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Potentially awkward advice from the Heritage guide to the event:
"Please refrain from wearing a hiviz jacket as this can cause confusion with officials
undertaking a safety role."

Yes you can get into Stonehenge and also into Avebury.
Neither will permit bikes to be taken in, you will have to lock them to a flimsy barb wire fence nearby.
Personally, I would rather lop off my right ear.
The night will be full of drunken doped up twits and they will not steal your bike, but they may piss on it and or sit on it and or generally destroy it because they are ignorant.
No lighting of any real value and the cops will do nothing as there will be no witnesses to anything.

Personally, I would go to Avebury.  Much nice, much more friendly, much more free and easy, less f'wits, less agro.

Yup, it was worth visiting when you could actually sit on the stones up to the 1970s.  Now the only time you can do that is the solstice, when you have to mingle with hundreds of crusties.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Wrng time of year. You should be there for the winter solstice. Far more important as it marks the transitioninto the new year (and it is too cold for the crusties)

Why not do the Ring of Brodgar instead.. Much shorter gap between sundown and sun up.

Will I see sundown if I set off now? (the boss is off, and noone will notice).

If any of you spot a hot archaeologist with lots of tattoos and a toddler, say hi from me ;)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Yes but you may not have  got there by then... A wee bit north of John o Groats.
