Which Network Switch?
« on: 20 December, 2013, 10:29:58 am »
Holla,

Just planning an IT upgrade for a client/friend's business. At the minute they are running a Cisco Catalyst 2950G 48IE managed network switch which gives 48 10/100 Mbit ethernet ports.

I'm looking to replace this with Gigabit switch suitable for a network with ~10 users (one workstation each). I need 4 ports for the server and extra ports for VOIP phones. Probably get away with a 24 port switch. Happy to buy refurbished/second hand. The business shifts a lot of data around and the current set-up is crippling but at the same time they'd rather pay £100s rather than £1000's for one. (We didn't realise the existing switch topped of a 100Mbit).

Thanks
Daniel

The HP Procurve 1810 series is a gigabit managed switch that Just Works for home/small business/school type applications, and the price is usually right.  The 1910 series gains you PoE if that's important for the phones.

Newer rackmount 1810s are fanless (look out for a model number ending in 'B' rather than 'A' if buying second hand).
