Route from Euston station to Brixton area please
« on: 15 September, 2008, 04:02:38 pm »
I have driven in London a few times but never cycled there and I would describe my knowledge of the city as sketchy. Apart from the two options of a) taking a compass and heading vaguely south, hoping to encounter a bridge over the watery bit on route or b) trying to follow a detailed mapped out route that will see us spending more time at junctions peering at the map than actually cycling, have any of you city folks got any better suggestions?

TIA

If you are anything like me, then a certain amount of time spent standing at junctions is inevitable, I spent my first week commuting doing this...

Bicycle Path - Oxford Circus to Stockwell at Bikely.com

This is my commute home, which takes in most of the route you would need. I am just a bit south of the Euston Road at work, and Brixton is just up the road from where I live...

Vauxhall could be hairy because you do not know which lane to shoot for. Doing it for the first time, I would get off at Vauxhall railway station (as the road curves round to the left and you leave Albert Embankment) and use the cycle path and toucan crossings to get you onto South Lambeth road.

They are rather annoying cycle paths, but when you don't know where you are going, probably safer.

IMO Lambeth is one of the best bridges to go over when you are trying to get to that bit of Sarf London. Quieter than Vauxhall, which I never use going southbound any more.

A suggested route to Waterloo. This isn't amazingly pleasant but if you're happy cycling in London traffic then it's fine.  Once you're on the Evershold St (just outside Euston statoin) it's easy to get to Waterloo bridge because you go straight on until you hit The Aldwych.

From Waterloo Bridge you can either go along the river or via Elephant 'n' Castle.  Along the river is more pleasant, but it will involve more navigational work. Via Elephant 'n' Castle you can simple follow signs for Brixton on the A3 and then the A23.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Thanks guys, it looks as if Waterloo bridge might be the best bet. Of course we have chosen our train to get the best deal, which means we arrive in London at about 5.30pm on a Friday afternoon. Great planning eh? I'm sure it will be character building stuff and whatever route we take we have plenty of time before meeting up with yACFrs on the Saturday morning.

If you are getting in at 5.30pm I would be happy to escort you on my commute home if you liked, as I will finish work around then. I could meet you at Euston.

Oh that's a kind offer. I will have to double check the times as the 5.30pm was an approximation. I will check tonight and pm you with details. Thanks.
