following Engerland's almost certain demise who are you now following?

for me a toss up between France (as I'll be there next week) and Chile (who I have £1 on in the sweep at work)

I usually support the team with the most Liverpool players in it* So now it's Uruguay or France.

* Has the advantage that you can change allegiance with the half time substitutions.

That's a bit harder for a Darlington fan

Though we did get briefly excited in 1998 when it looked as though Canada (with Jason de Vos) might qualify for the World Cup (they didn't, and we sold him anyway).

I'll be cheering for the same team I was supporting before - whoever takes my fancy in whatever game I happen to be watching! It might be based on something as fickle as the colour of their shirts (regarding which, I have noticed a pattern; we're in a transitional phase regarding football shirts, with tighter fitting tops replacing the looser fit that has been dominant for the last ten or more years - and the teams with tighter shirts tend to win. I've not yet developed a~~n observational hypothesis~~ bullshit theory about the mulitcoloured boots.

I normally tune out the commentators, but watching the first half of the Italy-Costa Rica match, one of them broke through to my consciousness with the words "Bristol City"! A kwik Gooooooooooogull tells me CR forward Alvaro Saborio played for BC back in 2003/4. I was rather supporting Costa Rica but now, as Bristol Rovers are only just up the road from me, I have double the reason!

Did you bother to read the post I submitted yesterday about my reasons for wanting CR to do well? Maybe such reasons are beyond you, but I happen to want the people of Costa Rica, who seem to be pretty good at Doing The Right Thing when it comes to Stuff That Matters, to have reasons to celebrate when it comes to stuff that doesn't.

The premise of the thread is that England are not going to advance to the knockout stages. Why don't you have a pop at Martin for starting the thread?

If CR slip up and, by some miracle, England can find their way through against the odds, I will be the first to congratulate them. Meanwhile, if you want to have a go at me, sod off to POBI where it's marginally more acceptable.

Erm, is that "USA and whoever's playing against Russia" or "whoever's playing Russia and USA"? I'm guessing the first, but it's never safe to assume these things on YACF!
