Split pins are, of course, a bit shit though.
they are arguably a lot less trouble than the fancy threaded pins in bicycle brakes; they don't seize into the caliper body, they never need to be drilled out, they don't lose the retaining clip for no good reason, they don't fall out of the caliper spontaneously, you can buy them very easily, and you don't need any special tools to fit them.
The split pins that are used on bicycle brakes are arguably overkill for the application. I note with interest that the pad retaining split pins on a well-respected vehicle - which can have when towing an all-up weight of about six tonnes- are 3/16" on the front brakes and just 5/32" (about 4mm) on the rear brakes. These split pins are also a lot longer and easier to bend, when compared with the diameter. By comparison pins of ~2mm diameter seem more than strong enough on a bicycle brake.
As well as generic parts eg from a motor factors, Shimano use two different split pins in their brakes, and you can buy them (any shimano dealer) separately.
