.... when the pedals are turned backwards.
What's the first port of call when trying to fix this?

Clean and lube the chain.

Do you mean it's losing tension, going slack on the top run?  If so it's probably the freewheel rather than the chain.

Clean and lube the chain.
It's a brand spanking new chain.

I don't know 'cos I've not seen it myself - just acting on reports received .
Cassette is brand new also.
If it is as you describe, what's the immediate solution? Plenty oily in freewheelie?

Clean and lubricate the freewheel (best to dismantle it, but dribbling thin oil down the back whilst spinning it sometimes works).
If it's a new chain it could be clinging to a worn chainring - a sort of reverse chain-suck.

Chainring and cranks are also brand spanking new. I'll know more when I get to see the sickly beast.
ETA - They're Aksium wheels/hubs - so not too difficult to take apart.

Is the chain the correct length?  - people have been known to take a new chain out of the packet and just fit it without either measuring against the old chain, or doing the wrap round measurement to assess correct length . . . too much chain could be the issue.

Correct width (speed) chain and other new bits? Fundamental, but..

Jockey wheels? I've had this problem with a broken jockey wheel bearing. Though if it's Shimano it will just have bushes.

Chain is the same length as the one it replaced.

Width / speed are correct.

I'll check these but suspect they are ok. It isn't a high mileage bike.

Good luck with remote diagnostics. Keep an open mind and look for the simple things before delving deeper. A low mileage/usage machine can suffer from parts seized whilst parked.

At least this problem should show up on a workstand or with the bike upside down.

I've had it with a stiff link, specifically the one I've just used to join the brand new chain together.

Freehub vs freewheel may be an important thing to know. Or not.
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

Incorrect routing around that annoying bit of metal between the two jockey wheels?
