My fault for being in a hurry. Still, a minimal deterrent is better than none (provided one has no illusions) until I get a better replacement.

For future reference, it would have been easier cutting through the part with the hole that the lock goes through (with the grinder). Leaving you to extract the key at your leisure. And the replacement would be cheaper than a good padlock.
