Which bike should I take?
« on: 20 August, 2008, 12:32:58 pm »
I am in two minds which bike to take to Mildenhall and then on to Holland.  Please help me decide.

1)  Ting Tong - my beautiful Ti bride

A classic van Nicholas piece of kit.  Sooooo comfortable and not bad luggage capacity for a 'light' tourer.  Although my weight, combined with luggage and tent, does make the rear tyre bulge somewhat.

Excellent on the flat and not too bad on hills (the rider is definitely the weakest link in the hill chain).  Easy to get on and off trains.

2) Regina - the Trice Q

A lady I fell in love with but have neglected for quite some time.  I have cleaned and oiled her - but she still needs some fine tuning fettling (I'm not very good at indexing gears, etc).

Huuuuuuuge luggage capacity.  Comfort beyond belief.  Fantastic on the flat - a bugger on the hills.  Can be awkward to get on and off trains.

.........................................

So... which do I take to Mildenhall and Holland?  If I bring Regina, is there someone who can have a quick look at the gears?

Hmm. Neither Mildenhall and Holland are not really renowned for hills.

Oh I don't know. There were 'bastard hills' in Norfolk, weren't there Reg...  ;D

I say Regina.  But don't aim to ride her as far as Ting-Tong.  Your recumbent legs will have withered and died...

Norfolk has the lowest "high point" of any county in the UK at 102m.

On the bright side, consider that taking Regina means that you won't have to stop for a fag on at the bottom of every single hill slight incline, as you'll be able to do it on the move instead...think of the time you'll save!

I'll try to fettle your gears if you take your Trice if you want. I hope it's not a Regina freewheel though.

I'd take Regina.
No big hills to worry about.
The extra luggage carrying will mean that you can stock up on fags and booze on the way home.
But if you're aiming to do some big mileage in Holland, I'd take the titanium bike.
Maybe Nutty will fettle your gears for you ;D
You wouldn't have this trouble if you rode a fixed :P

ferries will be fine, I got mine back from Ireland when I brought it by just riding up the ramp the same as any other bike.
The only problem you'll have is if you need to take a train. Is yours a folding one?

Not forgeting about the Dutch headwinds that can be hard work, if I was going over I'd take the trike.
But I would say that  ;)
