How to retrieve emails (after installing windows 7)?
« on: 05 November, 2009, 08:26:17 pm »
In my haste to install Windows 7 I didn't get round to saving my emails.
Does anyone know how I'd go about retrieving them?

(Edit: upgraded from vista).

Many thanks,

maander

The upgrade should have retained all your programs. Unless you did a custom install, which I think starts from scratch. But if it did this, then it takes a copy of your old installation and keeps it on the disk.

So - first of all, what type of install did you do?
Second - what is  your email program?

I did an upgrade and I was using Windows Mail.

Hope this helps.

I've had a read around, and it is not clear.

But the replacement client is windows live mail.
Mail - Windows Live

I would suggest installing that, and seeing if it will import your old windows mail stuff.

Thanks for your help Tony. The link you gave me didn't yield any results, but I did
manage to find my addresses by following:
C:\users\me\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail Directory.

However, the problem now is to get them into Thunderbird that I'm using now.
Cut 'n' paste or drag and drop doesn't seem to work. It looks like I'll have to transfer
them across individually.

(edit: Can't get Windows touch option to work)  :(

Look under Tools in Thunderbird. You should find an import option that is supposed to do this.
There's no vibrations, but wait.

When you say the link didn't yield results - does that mean you installed windows live mail, but it wouldn't import from windows mail, or did the link not work at all?

Link is working for me at the moment.

I am sure it is possible to import into windows live mail - we just need to find the right way - from there it will be possible to transfer to thunderbird

(that is all assuming the direct import into thunderbird doesn't work.)

Sorry Tony, I meant I  installed Windows Live and  it wouldn't import Windows Mail. The import option in Thunderbird doesn't give the option to import from Windows Mail, Outlook and Outlook Express are on there though. Are there any other mail servers you can recommend?

I've been reading up on this on and off all day. Everything I read says  you need to first export from windows mail before you import to anything else.

Obviously you can't do this because you no longer have windows mail. Is there another PC you have with Vista on, that you can transfer your old mail to , to that you can then export it?

Thanks for your help Tony, I think I'm done for on this one. I've only got one pc.
Serves me right for being in a hurry to get the new operating system.
