I don't think we've ever had a thread on this, Funk, Jazz, Soul from the 70s largely.
Here's a slightly reggae version of Bill Withers' 'Use Me'. By Esther Phillips.

Excellent. Love the horns.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Try this. Etta James, Gladys Knight and Chaka Kahn backed by BB King !

that's a lorra lorra talent on one stage.

AAMOI I reckon Etta James' version of "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" is an all-time-great recording.

Etta James makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

To link two threads, it was in the Anvil Civic Cinema that I discovered her. I had some time to kill, so went on spec to see what the matinee was. It was a pretty dire buddy movie, but the music was all Etta. I only stayed to the end to read the credits & find out who it was.
Getting there...

I remember seeing this album in a shop years ago. Wish I had bought it.

Frequently they can be instrumental remixes of well known tracks with a guitar or sax part replacing the vocal, which makes them suitable as beds in videos with interviews.

I'm partial to a touch of Jam & Lewis, makes a nice background to a video of a group climbing slowly.

There is hope for music yet, as 'The Heavy' proved on Letterman.

    YouTube
        - The Heavy - "How You Like Me Now?" 1/18 Letterman (TheAudioPerv.com)

reminiscent of this style of late 60s dance music.

Harvey Scales has better syncopation.

My favourite Average White Band performance is this,

        - average white band work to do

I wouldn't class them as rare groove, because they have always been popular.

Takes me back to the late '80s, sitting in listening to 'The Quiet Storm' on a Saturday night. Robbie Vincent, I think it was.
