Bobb's decided that we're going to pickle some eggs this weekend. Anyone got a recipe they prefer?

Boil the eggs for nine minutes, cool, shell, place in jar, add vinegar, a few peppercorns and a couple of dried chillies then throw it all in the bin and next time make something edible instead.

I've never tried pickled egg. The idea revolts me.

Here's a challenge: can you put it into words what it tastes like?

I do like hard boiled eggs with salad cream, which is mostly vinegar. Does this mean I would like pickled eggs as well?

We have done white wine and malt vinegars mixed, with chopped chilli, ginger, garlic, pickling spice, salt, peppercorns and sugar. Oh, and Tabasco.

Bobb insisted we document the creation of our pickled eggs in photo form.

First, we hardboiled the eggs.

Bobb chopped chillis.

Lots of good stuff in the vinegar.

Garlic and ginger.

Two large chillis isn't enough for Bobb.

Might as well put some peppercorns in there too.

Bay leaf? Why not?

Let's boil the vinegar and stuff.

Don't have any big jars so let's use four small ones.

In a cupboard for a few months.

As a special post-Christmas treat, we tried the pickled eggs today. They're very good. I think they taste like HP Sauce but with more chilli.

I figured out why I don't like the idea of pickled eggs: my brain (for no good reason) associates them with "thousand year" eggs.

But I will be brave and give them a go anyway.

We opened jar 2 today and had half an egg each. Bobb's verdict was "they've got some fucking kick." He's right.

It was YACF that first introduced me to the pickled egg. I succumbed.

They're one of those things that you know is going to make you feel dirty, but you do it anyway because you want to feel just that little bit dirty

My pickled eggs turned out the same colour as yours - which firmly suggests that shop bought p'eggs probably contain lots of chemicals to keep them looking pristine.
