« on: 11 July, 2008, 09:50:41 am »
Grrrrrr ME!...some canute in a van turned left across the bus lane I was riding down and sent me for a purler...few graze and bruises but nothing major..front wheel like a pringle had to stamp it into some semblance of circularity so I wouldn't be stranded on the Brixton Road!..front brake lever snapped thought.....not best pleased

Glad you're OK, Otto. Did you manage to get details of the van & driver?

Grazes and road rash sting like flip, but you can get some good scabs off in a while.

road rage stabbing murder, Leyton High Rd last night. be careful out there.

Report incident to Police.
Contact LCC/CTC for advice and referral to a cycle-friendly solicitor.
Get checked out by a doctor.

Start a list of all the expenses you incur as a result of this crash: bike wheel, bike shop charges, clothing replacement, transport fares because you can't use bike, time off work etc.

Remember not all drivers give correct details.

Hope you clear things up soon.

Thanks for the advice. I just rang the drivers company, the HR department  knew all about it, they have already sorted out their insurance company and emailed me the details.. "get your bike fixed and send us the bill"...

They do that because they think a bike costs £99.

Send 'em a £500 bill for a new Mavic Ksyrium ES front wheel and they start to back pedal!  >:(
This isn't just a thousand to one shot. This is a professional blood sport. It can happen to you. And it can happen again.

They also hope that they can get a 'final' settlement done before the whiplash* shows up or the grazed knee gets infected and forces you to give up work*.

Also, don't forget to claim for damaged clothing and travel expenses.

*Such issues won't be a problem in this case, we all hope, but are sufficiently common to make such tactics worthwhile.
Life is too important to be taken seriously.

Glad you are okay, but even happier for you with the response from the company.
The fact that the HR department knew indicates that the driver has informed them as soon as he got back.
Sounds like you will be okay as a result.

Well just got a new Wheel from Evans, and a new lever, which the shop guy got out of the parts bin for me for a couple of quid...so I'm back on the road for a total of 61 quid....annoying but not the end of the world

On the plus side, it's fashionable to utterly wrap any road rash up in gauze at the mo so you can look quite cool!
